Aesop’s fables painted in various panels above the Obertal Mall in Leavenworth, WA, and other stories above the store: can you name the tale?

Leavenworth Sausage Garten + Cured by Visconti

Besides offering an outdoor beer garden featuring local and imported German beers on tap and homemade German sausages such as Bratwurst, Bockwurst, Currywurst, Kielbasa, and more (some other international options include Chorizo and Italian Sausage as well as the standby beef Frank) by the Cured by Visconti Italian Market just a couple doors down, the Leavenworth Sausage Garten also offers a big mustard bar.

The variety of mustards number more than a dozen, and so I couldn’t choose just one for my currywurst. So  I went with the Hawaiian Pineapple Mustard, Cranberry Mustard, Maui Onion Mustard, and Russian Mustard. You can also top as much or little sauerkraut as you desire.

In the colder months, they have tents and heated fire lamps to keep you cozy while you people watch and enjoy your sausages. After you order, you can relax at your bench and table as a server will bring your meal to you based on the number they gave you and take back to your seat. Even if you are vegetarian, they have veggie sausage options, as well as pretzels and cheese and a few other sides.

If you would like to take some of the sausages home, just walk down to Cured by Visconti  Italian Market just a couple doors down to get some packaged up in their cases, as well as see their salami and other offerings.

I was impressed that they had sliced up samples of so much of their deli to try, and picked out my favorite as the Bockwurst, and also the Mole Salami (pure pork chopped, mixed with spices, chocolate, chili peppers, raisins, sesame, peanuts, almonds, than fermented and aged for 30+ days) while my friend picked out the Felino (pure pork chopped and marinated with wine and fermented and aged for 30+ days). I admire their tagline of “Preserving history’s recipes one pig at a time”.

Views from Waterfront Park, Leavenworth

When we visited the Waterfront Park in Leavenworth, WA on Friday morning (after Thanksgiving), it was quiet and misty- just gorgeous. See for yourselves- these photos with my little point and shoot does not do them justice, and I wonder again (as I have for the past month or so) about investing in a serious camera. Here is a view from the same park on Thursday, when F went out to search desperately for coffee, wondeirng what would be open on Thanksgiving.

Looks around Leavenworth, WA

During our stay, it was very cool and misty, with rain everyday except for of course, the day we left when it was clear and sunny and bright. But, I liked the mysterious romantic atmosphere of the mist that would envelope the snowy mountains. On Friday morning after Thanksgiving, we took a walk around 10am or so, when the streets were still relatively empty as most of the stores and the Christkindlmarkt had not opened yet. Our walk included a visit to Waterfront Park as well as up and down the town to admire the Bavarian theme of the buildings and some of the holiday decorations that were up already.

Looking around Leavenworth- morning at the Front Street park overlooking into the yet to open Christkindlmarkt from our rental condo above the pharmacy. Our rental condo is across the street from the Gazebo, where we would be able to watch the opening Welcome ceremony with St Nick, Mr and Mrs Claus, and the Christkind or listen to the live music from our balcony, conveniently located right in the middle of Leavenworth on Front Street, so smack dab in the middle of everything.

Here are some shots I took capturing the Bavarian buildings, holiday decorations (more were going up in anticipation of the Christmas Lighting festival that starts next weekend) and the misty mountains you can see surrounding town. Hopefully this gives you a good feel of the charm of this little town. In my next post, I will show you some more of the beautiful misty mountains from the Waterfront Park walk we took
