Winston’s Fish N Chips

Feeling like a little bit of a taste of England after seeing all the coronation photos and gossip this past weekend? Check out Winston’s British Fish N Chips, the first food truck of many to come – they are looking to open more in the US. The truck and fish and chips are named for Winston the Royal Corgi of Chef Darren McGrady’s YouTube channel.

Chef McGrady prepared fish and British chips as Personal Chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Princes William and Harry, and others at Buckingham Palace including five US Presidents and now brings these recipes to US, and serving them through mobile restaurants, at the insistence of Winston! Also Winston is adorable – you can find his friendly face on the food truck and if you bring a lil one, acquire a mini-Winston.

Winston’s Royal Feast Sampler gives you a chance to try everything! The meal includes 1 generous (special cut for them from their sourcer) piece of hand-battered wild-caught Alaskan Cod, British Chips, Kings Wings in a sticky sauce, Smoked Fish Chowder (secret recipe dating back to the 1800’s and Queen Victoria), Curry Sauce, Mushy Peas, and Tartar Sauce. The Smoked Fish Chowder is incredible – if they sold this by the pint I would be in line to take it home. It’s chunky full of the fish with really no need for those oyster crackers. I didn’t use the curry sauce much, but took it back and added it to regular rice as another meal.

Meanwhile, those Kings Wings have a nice kick and balance of sweet and spice, but be prepared with extra napkins after you lick your fingers!

Or get the Winston’s Fish N Chips which nets you 2 pieces of fish with tartar sauce with chips and your choice of mushy peas or curry sauce. I went with mushy peas here, and here’s a peek inside the hand batter.

Either way don’t forget to add the Chippy Sauce the Queen loved on her chips – look for the squeeze bottle. They also have malt vinegar in packets in the baskets.

The amazing thing about these fish and chips from Winston’s Fish N Chips is that they stay crispy even after my drive home my leftovers were still crunchy an hour later. The boxes not only look great, but were built with functionality in mind for takeout and to keep your food ready even for a 30 minute drive home.

Winston’s Fish N Chips food truck is open 7 Days A Week 11am to 7pm (or until it sells out) at 2711 NE Andresen Rd., Vancouver, WA, in the parking Lot of Living Hope Church. There’s plenty of parking, and the food truck has a covered area to wait while they fry your order fresh to order, though they also provide you a buzzer if you want to wait in your car if it’s windy. The only negative is that there are no restrooms and no sit down dining area – don’t be surprised you’ll see many sitting in their car and eating! Beverages are also limited at Winston’s to a few options – you’ll have to take this home if you want to wash it down with a beer.

Are you a fan of fish and chips? What is your preference of accompaniment – tartar sauce, malt vinegar, or other? And on a scale of 1 to 10, are you also at a 15 that this truck should show up at Corgi Beach Day at the Oregon Coast? I know Ash and mini-Winston hang out watching the birds and squirrels daily.
