PDX Beer Week 2016 Highlights

This Thursday kicks off PDX Beer Week 2016, which lasts from June 9 to June 19. Yes, this is actually more than a week, but it’s been like that for years and I can’t complain about having more days to have more events to celebrate Portland beer. For these eleven days of fun, the events range from those showcasing new beers or particular beer styles to special collaboration food inspired or to be paired with beers. There are beer events for the beer geek like seminars, but there are also beer events that are accessible even to the casual or novice beer drinker like beer sampling.

In fact, there are quite a few limited edition collaborations available to celebrate Portland Beer Week 2016 that are beyond just drinking beer or beer events. Check out these special one off concoctions available at multiple locations throughout the duration of the 11 days of June 9-19.

  • Portland Brewing & Double Mountain‘s official beer of the 2016 Portland Beer Week – Subcontinental IPA. This is a ~7% ABV northwest IPA brewed with Indian spices like pepper, cardamom, clove, cumin and saffron. These spices highlight the beer’s biscuity malt base and tropical fruit hop notes, and I was surprised as the beer warmed a bit how the spices became more prominent and really tasty, particularly the cardamom and cumin for me. You can find 22 oz bottles at local beer bottle shops as well as Whole Foods who is doing a special free tasting at all their Portland Whole Foods locations on Friday June 10 and Wednesday June 16, as well as of course at the Portland Brewing and Double Mountain taprooms.

  • Bunk Sandwiches Beer Week Fried Chicken Sandwich, a SubContinental IPA brined buttermilk fried chicken with bacon scallion aioli, hot sauce, maple & Pickopolis pickles. Available at Bunk Wonder during beer week. There is another beer sandwich, a sloppy joe made with Good Life Cash stout, is also available at Bunk Bar Water.

  • I tried Beer Bratwurst especially made for the Portland Brewing Taproom by SP Provisions using about 30 gallons of beer for every 100 pounds when making the bratwurst, and then the sausage is further cooked by simmering it in the beer and then you can enjoy it with the beer mustard!. Definitely for me this bratwurst is the best food pairing with the beer itself – or any beer, any time of year,

  • Salt & Straw Ice Cream’s Garam Masala & Hops, a special ice cream that uses a combination of Indian spices and hop that match the same ones used by the Subcontinental IPA, plus chunks of dark molasses cake. This was my favorite of all the 4 beer “foods” inspired by the beer I tried! This flavor is available exclusively at Wiz Bang Bar at Pine Street Market.

  • For any of you IPA loversEl Segundo Brewing from California is having a launch party Thursday, June 9 6 – 10 PM starring their very hop forward, taking place naturally at beer bar N.W.I.P.A. Then a week later, also at N.W. I.P.A., on Friday June 17 5 PM on attend the 3-Way IPA party that offers the 3 Way IPA on tap as well as IPAs from all three of the 3 Way IPA collaborators of Fort George, Barley Brown’s, and Melvin Brewing
  • Pair beer and food at a great value on Thursday June 9 6 – 9 PM. For $40 per person at The Beer Belly Dinner with Ecliptic at Eastburn you get 5 courses paired with five Ecliptic beers – see the menu at the link. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, a nonprofit health and service organization supporting musicians and their families during medical emergencies.
  • One of my favorite beer festivals every year is the Portland Fruit Beer Festival. This year it has finally moved from the Burnside Brewing parking lot, which it has outgrown, to the shady North Park Blocks (NW 8th and Davis) with 40% more room and did I mention shade? Running from Friday, June 10 – Sunday June 12 this festival offers fruit beers, ciders for the gluten free, food trucks for eats and live music, and is all ages.

    I’ve highlighted Portland Fruit Beer Festival beers in the past in 2015 and 2014 and I’m going this year as well. I often go multiple times because of special tap beers they tap over the days. This year 29 breweries and 7 cideries are offering 36 regularly pouring taps of beers, plus 24 additional rare and rotating tap lines. Look for my personal picks list on Thursday and which I’ll update after attending on Friday!

  • For an alternate festival, celebrate  at the 1 night Rye Beer Festival with 20 Rye Beers from 20 participating breweries and Rye Beer Cocktails at Eastburn from Friday June 10 from 4 PM – 2 AM. Part of the proceeds of the Rye Beer Festival will benefit the Children’s Cancer Association. This year, highlights of the Rye Beer Festival include a whiskey back card offered for $10 that includes (3) 1/2 ounce shots of Russell’s Reserve Rye, Knob Creek Rye and Wild Turkey Rye and Jacob Grier will be creating a special rye beer cocktail combining specially brewed Rye Beer Festival official beer Back Pedal Brewing’s Oatmeal Ryesin Cookie beer with rye whiskey and other ingredients and other cocktails. At 10pm the fest will offer live music from The Cure cover band The Xploding Boys (no cover of you’re in by 8:30, and remember the proceeds go towards a great cause anyway). 
  • For a different take on beers in a new way, the Randallized Beer Fest being held on Saturday June 11 (free, just pay for what you drink) at Imperial Taproom offers local beers poured through Randalls containing a variety of interesting ingredients to add new twists of flavors.
  • If you love Sour Beers, Saraveza Bottle Shop and Pasty Tavern on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12 all day will be pouring Cascade Brewing as part of a Cascade Invasion that includes a special Saraveza blend as well as Elderberry Blond, Nectarine Dream, Rose City Sour and Mixed Plum while also “putting out a massive selection of vintage Cascade bottles that we’ve been hoarding” for you to purchase.

    For a more serious sour beer education, attend the Sour & Wild Ale Seminar presented by Oregon State University and panelists like Trevor Rogers (De Garde Breiwng), Christian de Benedetti (Wolves & People), Alex Ganum (Upright Brewing), Matt van Wyk (Alesong Brewing & Blending and formerly Oakshire) and Ben Edmunds (Breakside Brewery) at Tuesday, June 14 at 5:30 PM at Upright Brewing.
    There’s even a sour beer festival, courtesy of Imperial hosting the Sour Solstice Sour Beer Festival on Saturday June 18 and a dozen sour beers to choose from on tap.

    If you’re really into bourbon barrel aged Cascade, although not technically part of Portland Beer Week, Cascade is having Bourbon Barrel Week.5 from June 7-19 at Cascade Brewing and Raccoon Lodge.
  • I always want to promote beer pairings with food, so if you’re out in the Happy Valley area come out on Sunday June 12 3 PM – 6 PM to the Happy Valley Station Food Cart Pod with Alameda, Base Camp, Coalition, and Culmination breweries bringing beer out to the 24 food carts in a structure location, and the food carts will be offering Open House Special where Food Samples are $1, $2, & $3 so you can try all the food carts.
  • There are always new breweries opening up in Oregon so it may be heard to track them all. Thankfully there is the 101 on the newbies all at once that you can attend via the  New Oregon Breweries Showcase, this year happening at Bailey’s Taproom on Monday June 13 noon – midnight. The showcase will introduce you to 11 new breweries from Oregon, all opened within the last year and you will get a chance to meet the brewers and owners 5 – 8 PM as well as enjoy beers from newcomers Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery, Alesong Brewing & Blending, Ruse Brewing, Freebridge Brewing, Ancestry Brewing, Public Coast Brewing, Great Notion Brewing and more TBA. I will be at this event if you want to say hi!

  • Another exciting beer pairing dinner is Maya Lovelace of Mae PDX and her fried chicken with six beers from Breakside, Ballast Point, and Fremont on Monday June 13 7 PM at Old Salt Marketplace. See the menu here that includes family style dinner with Carolina gold risotto with morels, ramps, and shelling peas; Buttermilk brined chicken skillet fried in 3 fats (bacon fat, chicken fat, and lard), Pimento mac and cheese, and Brown sugar pound cake studded with bourbon barrel smoked cocoa nibs, macerated strawberries, buttermilk vanilla whipped cream.   • How about Barrel Aged Beer and Bacon? Also on Monday June 13 6 PM – 11 PM Saraveza Bottle Shop and Pasty Tavern welcomes Fremont Brewing with BBF (Bacon Best Friend) Zeph from Proletariat Butchery passing out FREE samples of his delicious meat as Fremont brings taproom only and barrel aged beers with them for Fremont Bacon Night.

  • Also on Monday June 13 is an opportunity to see how beer pairs with sushi when Roscoe’s and Miyamoto Sushi pair up to offer four courses of sushi paired with pFriem Family Brewers Oude Kriek, Crux Fermentation Project Apricot Wild Farmhouse Ale, The Commons Brewery, and Breakside Brewery. The cost for the 4 courses of Sushi and Beers is $25, just  show up any time at Roscoe’s between 4:30 and 8:30 PM or until they run out.
  • If you are a Belgian Beer aficionado, look to the 5th Annual Battle of the Belgian beers with 4 Belgian beers versus 4 US Belgian-inspired styles on Tuesday, June 14 between 5-9 PM at Bazi Bierbrasserie with $15 for all eight 5 ounce tasters.
    The next day, on Wednesday June 15 Bazi presents the annual Mussels from Brussels with five breweries (Breakside , Fat Head’s, Lompoc, pFriem, and Upright), five secret sauces created by each brewery for dipping in one pound of mussels served with fries, and paired with their Belgian-inspired beer, and you judge who is the winner. Seating for you/audience judges will take place every 30 minutes between 5:30-8:30 PM.
  • One of my favorite festivals all year is this one pairing Beer and Cheese at the Portland Beer and Cheese Festival (already sold out!), this year at the on Saturday, June 18 1 – 5 PM at Wayfinder Beer. Expertly pairing samples of beer with a sample of cheese times ten. 10 different beers from 10 different breweries with 10 amazing cheeses paired by Cheesemonger Steve Jones of Cheese Bar. Your ticket price include sample of each plus complimentary samples of Xocolatl de David artisian chocolates and charcuterie and meats from Wayfinder chef Rodney Muirhead. To get an idea of the experience, check out my recap of last year’s event.

  • A new closing event for Portland Beer week this year is SNACKDOWN! on Sunday June 19th 12 – 4 PM at The Evergreen event space above Loyal Legion. SNACKDOWN! is a food and beer pairing event where 10 of Portland Chefs and 10 Oregon Brewers are paired into 10 Brewer/Chef teams to make their greatest snack and beer pairing. Guests will choose their favorite pairing and the winning team will be awarded the SNACKDOWN Belt! This event is designed to be more loose than a traditional beer pairing dinner. DJ Rev Shines will be keeping the party live, while the atmosphere is styled like a WWF style Smackdown with brewers and chefs hyping their pairing on the mic – possibly while sporting wrestling themed costume. WHAT? Yeah I will totally be there.

In the Kitchen with Bollywood Theater Recipes

It’s hard to believe it’s already been four years since Portland got Indian Street Food in the form of Bollywood Theater. It was then when Troy MacLarty, then a veteran of Chez Panisse and experienced with the kitchens of Italian restaurants, got tired of waiting for someone else to open the Indian restaurant he wanted to go to. He knew there was more variety and flavors in Indian cuisine then the creamy curries that were typically offered at Indian restaurants. Just like Italian food, he knew there were regional specialties that were being missed that shouldn’t be.

So he decided to go ahead and offer it himself then if no one else was going to. He thought it would be a small restaurant, maybe breaking even at 30 covers a night. Little did he know in a few years, he would be serving about a thousand a night at two restaurants.

Since 2014, Bollywood Theater has expanded to a second location, from the original at NE Alberta to a larger one at SE Division, and this second location is my favorite with its huge patio out to the street and roll up garage doors which to me. The connection to the outside of this location to me gives it a bit of an authentic “street feel” with the extra contribution of car noises and exhaust while still sitting underneath sparkling stringed lights. It also just feels a lot roomier with its two floors inside of seating.

Inside, it is colorful and bright with all sorts of posters and ads on the walls and knick knacks on shelves, and there is a Bollywood movie playing on one wall. The open kitchen lets you get a little peek of the magic to make your dishes and drinks. Since the SE Division location is so much bigger, I don’t think you feel as cramped / cozy as the NE Alberta because the bar is long and out of the way of the ordering line for food, and sitting there you can look directly into the kitchen to watch (you can see the bar behind Chef Troy in the last photo).

Particular to the SE Division location a mini grocery store boasting Indian ingredients in case you want to make a dish at home. The way various products are intermingled and stocked so close to each other is exactly like what I remember seeing in the stores on a part of Devon Avenue, a famous street in Chicago known for being a pathway to many ethnic neighborhoods including a 10 block strip of South Asian restaurants and Indian/Pakistani shops, a community like a Little India instead of a Chinatown. I think this type of product arrangement is part of a centuries old trick to slow you down as a customer to look at every item individually instead of efficiently just getting what you came for by spotting it immediately on neat shelves, ha ha.

One food adventure on top of the new Indian street food that Troy wanted to bring (as well as still offering a few curries and thali meals) that Bollywood Theater also offers is that they also try to incorporate Northwest local ingredients and create an Indian take using that ingredient. “What would an Indian make if they had asparagus there” for instance was a question; and these answers are posted on the ever changing Specials Board. So make sure you check it out for unique Northwest and Indian mashup combinations, such as this Grilled Asparagus with a rich curry made with fresh tumeric, green garlic, and cream topped with a sweet raisin and almond chutney.

In today’s post, I’m going to re-share a few recipes Chef Troy shared with a media/bloggers group when I was fortunate to get some time In the Kitchen with Bollywood Theater recipes and Chef Troy.

He talked us through the making of Paneer and then, the paneer can be used in his recipe for a Mixed Dal, Fava Bean and Paneer Pakoras, which you can serve with Rhubarb Strawberry Achaar. He also shared the ingredients and steps to his favorite dish on the menu, the Dahi Papri Chaat.

If you get a little dizzy as you read the list of ingredients – don’t worry, I felt the same way the first time I took an Indian cooking class and we spent a couple hours just to make paneer makhani, dal, and paratha. Even though we had only asked for two dishes, we couldn’t have made anything without several specialized spices that she brought in little baggies. You can find some of these spices officially on display and offered inside Bollywood Theater too. Chef Troy has even worked with Reluctant Trading Experiment to offer their special masalas. The Reluctant Trading Experiment one of the big spice importer for Bollywood Theater to bring them flavors direct from India.

Anyway, for me pretty much after that Indian cooking class, I decided I would let the experts at the restaurants stock all the spices and do all the work in making all this stuff on my behalf. And Bollywood does make almost everything from scratch – just look at in the kitchen at all the various homemade masala spice mixes they have.

The two locations of Bollywood Theater tomorrow, May 24, will be donating 15% of all sales at both Bollywood Theater to Camp Ukandu. Since 1986, Camp Ukandu has been fulfilling its mission of bringing joy and hope to children living with cancer, their siblings, and their families at no cost by providing “outrageously fun” camp experiences while being a a safe and secure environment for kids to be kids without being defined or limited by cancer.

As a note, one thing I was struck by when learning from Chef Troy is that he kept giving us samples of everything during the cooking process so we could see and feel and taste what it looked like at each stage. Watching in the kitchen, I also saw constant tasting (they have a lot of individual sampling spoons, don’t worry) even though they must have made some of those things a hundred times by now but they still tasted to make sure it is up to standards, even if it’s just toasted nuts, every time. So don’t forget to keep tasting to check whenever you are cooking, whatever you are making, and no matter how often you have made it before.

    • 1 tablespoon rice flour
    • 1 teaspoon garam masla
    • 1 teaspoon cayenne
    • 1 teaspoon red chile flake
    • kosher salt to taste
    • water as needed
    • 1 cup paneer, crumbled (see paneer recipe above or just purchase it from Bollywood Theater or other Indian market)
    • 1 cup fava beans, blanched, peeled, and rough chopped
    • zest of 1 lemon
    • 1/2 mint bunch, roughly chopped
  • Rhubarb Strawberry Achaar
    • I’m going to cheat here because Portland Monthly already published this, so just go there and get the ingredients and recipe

Directions:
They make this paneer times a week (almost every other day) making 50 pounds each batch in a huge steam kettle and measuring the temperature precisely so it’s not too soft or too hard. They also cut the paneer while it’s still warm. For the paneer, the ingredients listed are going to make over 50 pounds of cheese though Chef Troy says it reduces well. You probably want to reduce this to just a gallon of milk, so you get about a pound of paneer.

Place milk and cream in a steam kettle. Add sugar and salt. Bring to 210 degrees over high heat, stirring often. When it reaches 210 degrees, shut off heat and add white wine vinegar. Allow to separate completely, stirring in the beginning and then let rest without stirring. Drain the curds from the whey, and then place to drain further in cheesecloth, with weight added after adding all your ricotta to press out additional whey. The pressing portion to firm out the paneer is what differentiates paneer from ricotta!

The steam kettle they use is pretty impressive. Did I mention they have to do this huge 50 pound kettle worth of cheese four times a week because they use that much paneer?!?

As they were separating out the curds on the cheesecloth, I wanted to eat a bowl full of that fresh paneer. It shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m a big fan of their Paneer Makhani (a house paneer in a rich tomato cream and cashew curry). It’s like a nod Italian food but gets rid of the middle man of pasta with the dish and goes directly to the tomato sauce and cheese. If you get the Paneer Makhani as a Thali Meal at Bollywood Theater instead of a small plate, it is served with Saffron Rice, Sambar, Dal, Raita, Paratha and Green Chutney for a complete meal.

Soak dals overnight, drain and grind in food processor to a rough paste. Set aside.

Add to dal mixture and add lemon zest, paneer, fava beans and mint. Mix thoroughly, add salt to taste, this will take more salt than you may think. It should look a little like this:

Form into balls and deep fry in medium hot oil. Drain pakoras on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve with the room temperature Rhubarb Strawberry Achaar.

Dahi Papri Chaat

This is one of my two favorite dishes on the Bollywood Theater menu (the other is the Kati Roll, which is like an Indian version of a pita roll but using paratha instead). It’s an explosion of flavors, including the slight creamy yet sour yogurt, the bright spices of chilies, sweetness of the tamarind, soft from potatoes and chickpeas but crispy from the sev and the papri crackers.

Ingredients:

  • 36 papri crackers, you can purchase these instead of making the, but the Bollywood Theater recipe for Papri Dough includes
    • 2 cups All Purpose flour
    • 1 cup whole wheat flour
    • 2 teaspoons nigella seed
    • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
    • 3 tablespoons canola oil
    • water, as needed
  • 1 cup Yukon gold potatoes, cooked and diced
  • 1 cup black chickpeas, cooked
  • 1/2 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tablespoon of Serrano chilies, inced
  • 2 tablespoons of red onions
  • kosher salt to taste
  • 3 cups of drained yogurt, thinned a bit with water
  • 1 teaspoon of chaat masala (Bollywood Theater has their own recipe for this, but you can also purchase this spice mix)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Kashmir chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons of green chutney, which you can purchase or make using
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
    • 1/2 bunch cilantro, leaves and upper stems
    • 1/4 bunch mint, leaves only (about 1/4 cup, loosely packed)
    • 1 clove garlic chopped
    • 1 Serrano chile, seeded
    • 1 1″ ginger, peeled and sliced into coins against the grain
    • 4 1/2 teaspoons lime juice
    • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of tamarind date chutney, which you can make using
    • 1 cup tamarind puree
    • 1/2 cup pitted dates
    • jaggery
    • 1 1″ piece of ginger
    • garam masala, to taste
    • black salt, to taste
    • cayenne, to taste
    • water, as needed
  • 3/4 cup sev (the thin crispy noodle topping you can buy or make yourself – of course Bollywood makes their own)
    • 1 quart chickpea flour
    • 1 teaspoon cayenne
    • 1 teaspoon turmeric
    • 1 1/2 teaspoon asafetida
    • 2 tablespoons salt
    • 1/2 cup oil
    • water, as needed
  • 1/2 cup cilantro, rough chopped

Directions:
For the papri crackers, mix the flours, nigella seeds, and salt. Slowly add oil until mealy. Add water as needed to form a stiff dough. Allow the dough to rest before rolling (you can use a pasta machine for this) and cutting the circles to fry the cracker. I think you can also bake the crackers.

For the tamarind date chutney, simmer the tamarind puree, jaggery, and ginger. Puree and strain. Season to taste with spices.

For the green chutney, in a small dry saute pan, lightly toast the cumin over medium heat until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Blend all ingredients in a blender with enough cold water (ice) to make a pourable chutney. Adjust the flavor with salt, sugar, and lime if needed.

For the sev, mix the flour, turmeric, asafetida, and salt with a paddle. Drizzle in oil slowly as it mixes. Add water until it is the consistency of wet pasta dough. Then, using a special sev pasta maker, drop into oil to fry those crispy little noodle snack topping.

Assemble with the papri crackers first, and then in sequential order down the recipe list – potatoes, chickpeas, tomatoes, chilies, red onions, salt, yogurt, chaat masala, chili powder, green chutney, tamarind date chutney, sev (the crunchy noodles made from chickpea flour paste) and cilantro. Serve immediately while it is still a combo of soft and crispy before the layers soak in too much.

If you’re thinking, holy moly there’s this much labor for a $6.50 dish, now you know why I will just go to Bollywood Theater instead of making this myself. This also really helps you appreciate how much care, detail, and just work goes into what is essentially Indian fast food and a cheap eats restaurant!

Baker’s Dozen Coffee Beers & Doughnuts Next Weekend

I wanted to give you a heads up before the tickets sell out for Brian Yaeger’s Baker’s Dozen Coffee Beers & Doughnuts Festival!  Taking place next week from 10 AM – 3 PM on Saturday March 12, 2016 at Culmination Brewing, this was a fantastic event I attended last year that had me wired for the rest of the day thanks to all the caffeine from the coffee beers and all the sugar from the doughnuts.

This year, the festival again takes place at Culmination Brewing, which just recently won Best  New Brewery of the Year at the 2016 Oregon Beer Awards. With 20 some taps, of which 3/4 of them are their own beers which span a wide variety of styles, it’s hard to believe this brewery is less than a year old but already pumping out classics as well as always tweaking and experimenting too.

Culmination Brewing is family friendly and dog friendly, and has several comfy outdoor seats to enjoy the good weather (as well as easy street parking in a lot or nearby streets in the neighborhood just off out SE Sandy), as well as a dozen seats at the bar and tables inside as well. It is really like a neighborhood brewpub, but with an impressive list of brews.

For $24 a person (purchase your tickets online at Mercury Tickets before they sell out – they are only selling 400 of these 21+ beer tickets), at the Baker’s Dozen Coffee Beers and Doughnuts festival you get access to a thirteen 4-oz samples of baker’s dozen (13) coffee beers as well as samples of all thirteen different doughnuts from thirteen different breweries and local Portland doughnut shops all in one place.

And, it can be family fun! They are offering a Doughnut Decoration Station for kids and non-kids. Local roasted normal coffee will be provided too, along with live music. You can purchase additional beverages beyond the 13 coffee beers and/or house-made breakfast sandwiches too.

Here’s more of a glimpse of what this upcoming festival can be like, based on the Baker’s Dozen Coffee & Doughnuts Festival last year.  I collected multiple donuts on my plate so I could try pairing them with the various beers on the checklist you get when you check in in whatever order I want.

Here’s a pro tip: when I went, I took ziploc bags with me because even with them cutting up the doughnuts into sample sizes of 1/2 or 1/4 of a doughnut, there was no way I could eat 13 doughnut morsels, so I took some home by putting them in the bag!

Denver Beer Vacation: Celebrate GABF outside of GABF

Even though you may not have tickets to a session of GABF, during GABF week in Denver there is so much going on with special tappings all over town that you can have an amazing time trying new beers from all over the US without even stepping into the convention center. Here’s a look at some of the hubs for outside GABF activities to check out.

You can also consider this a list of places to sample a huge variety of beers from different breweries with their many taps in the downtown Denver area, whether GABF is happening or not. Perhaps you are on a Denver beer vacation and want to only stop at one or a few places where you can get a big buffet of beer options all in one sitting? Then this is your list.

Tap Takeovers at World of Beer

World of Beer is a franchise with three locations in Colorado and one in Renton, Washington. Even without the special tap takeover when we visited, World of Beer offers 500+ beers. You read that right, more than 500 beers!

And, they open from lunch until evening, so you don’t have to necessarily wait until after work when most bars open – great if you’re say, on vacation like I was. The beer menu is well organized into styles with helpful descriptions to help you make sense of their selection.

The 500 beers includes bottles and drafts, and I focused mostly on the drafts.

In particular, during my visit there was an Avery Brewing tap takeover with almost all of its year-round and seasonal beer. I loved the Avery Tectum Et Elix Barrel Aged #26, a funky American Wild with earthy flavors soured with Pediococcus and aged in cabernet barrels for 9 months, and the Avery Uncle Jacob’s Stout, an Imperial Stout at 17.4% but so smooth.

Also available at World of Lodo on our visit was Utah’s Wasatch Brewing with brewers and swag for their annual Polygamy Party and some beers from Coronado Brewing and Cigar City.

World of Beer also offers tavern food, with a dozen some appetizers, flatbreads, salads, burgers and sandwiches. One of the recommended starters is their German Pretzel, they have a cool way of presenting their giant Bavarian pretzel served with housemade mustard and for a little extra, housemade beer cheese sauce. That’s a regular snifter glass for size comparison there in the photo. I didn’t have room for dessert, but was tempted by their beer infused Belgian Waffle S’mores with toasted marshmallow, graham cracker crumbles and Kahlúa fudge sauce.

World of Beer offers happy hour as well as “Beerunch” – that’s right, a beer brunch that includes breakfast and unlimited bloody mary, mimosa, and beermosa bottomless booze brunch special (with food item), and a build your own bloody station. On their menu besides beer, they also had some interesting shots: Cinnamon Toast Crunch with Fireball and Rumchata, Irish Breakfast with Jameson, Butterscotch Schnapps and OJ, Baby Guinness with Patron XO and Bailey’s Irish Cream, and Duck Fart with Crown Royal, Bailey’s Irish Cream and Kahlua… and more

So if you are looking for a great variety of craft beer with food, and maybe also a bunch of TVs available to watch a game, World of Beer is a viable option that can satisfy many tastes of beer and food with a big selection.

Tap Takeovers at Freshcraft

Freshcraft, only half a block away in Lodo, offers only 28 taps but the food menu here is more refined, focused specifically on pairing well with beer. Serving lunch and dinner, dishes here sound tasty like a Deviled Pork Belly Wrap with spicy pork belly confit with apples, cabbage, carrots, scallions, jack cheese, and a red wine mustard BBQ sauce; or consider a Cheese Crusted Iowa Style Fried Pork Tenderloin sandwich at lunch. There is even support for a good option for a vegetarian diet, such as their cocoa marinated crimini mushrooms tacos, or quinoa nicoise with Parmesan-crusted quinoa cakes served with fresh greens, cured egg, marinated olives, green beans, tomatoes, and herbed potatoes. When we visited, their tap takeover I specifically came for was Upslope Brewing Company, where I was able to try special tappings of their beers such as

Falling Rock Tap House

The biggest beer party of GABF, besides GABF itself, it always Falling Rock Tap House. With 92 taps & over 300 bottled selections plus an extensive Vintage Beer Cellar, Falling Rock has basically been serving as the UnOfficial Headquarters for GABF and are open the latest (2AM!) of the options I’ve listed here. The taps are about 40% Colorado Beers, but also include a great selection of beers from the rest of the US as well as from the World.

During GABF they expand to their parking lot to have beer trailers in order to offer even more beers, and at in the afternoons through late evenings go through 5 or 10 changing of the kegs to feature other breweries on their taps inside or outside. For instance, on the day we visited they had cycled through Oskar Blues beers at 4 PM; Ballast Point at 9 PM; Shelton Brothers-distributed brews at 9:30 PM; the Verboten/Hoppin’ Frog collab beers at 10 PM; Wicked Week, Cascade, Fremont, Two Roads and Crooked Stave at 10:30 PM; and Trinity beers at 11 p.m.

The parking lot during GABF was cash only, but could truly rightfully claim that “Our Trailer Park has better Beer than your Trailer Park! :-)” with options such as Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela, Mikkeller Double Blueberry, Trois Dames Framboos Saison, Lord Hobo Boom Sauce, and more on the first night we visited.

The feel of Falling Rock is a bit like a frat house in that you can probably expect lots of guys drinking lots of beer, but without the immaturity. But, yes, it’s dark woods and the floors are a little sticky. There’s food offered though it’s nothing beyond the normal – you are really here for the beer and in many cases to meet all the fellow beer lovers and brewers who all will be hanging here.

They do at least clearly label the bathroom to help everyone out.

All three of these locations are very walkable – only all within 1/2 a mile of each other, and within a mile of the Colorado Convention Center where GABF is held. For my thoughts on my GABF 2015 experience, see my previous post here. I also covered enjoying beer within Denver and visiting breweries outside Denver by Longmont and Boulder.

Other ways to keep on top of the many many beer events in Denver is to check out a month or so before GABF the First Drafts beer blog at the Denver Post or calendar/listing at Westword, a Denver event listing publication.

Overall, it was a fun trip to have the biggest beercation ever for GABF week, and supporting and celebrating Craft Beer. Even with all the various stops I had there were always unique new beer flavors to enjoy among so many styles. Of all the places I’ve visited so far, Denver is the closest to Portland in it’s broad and deep beer scene offerings and having destinations within reasonable distances to each other to go on a beer sampling trip, beating Austin in beer quality and San Diego in how easy it is to visit.

I’ll still pick Portland as the winningest beercation city in the US though. 🙂

Best Beer Visits Outside Denver

For half a day while on my GABF Beercation (which I recapped my GABF session here, and another day we visited just Denver city brewers here with Beer Tasting in Denver: Great Divide, Crooked Stave, First Draft), we took a beer visits outside Denver excursion. We drove from Denver to the Longmont area to visit two brewery tasting rooms, and then on the way back went to Boulder area for a brewery to have lunch and more beer. Our stops for beer visits outside Denver were

Left Hand Brewing is best known for their Milk Stout, which is a creamy (especially here from their taps) chocolate coffee beer flavors. They have been around for quite a while – more than 20 years as they started in 1993.

What I also know them for is I think being one of the most thoughtfully designed beer tasting rooms I’ve ever visited. Their tasting room includes a patio area that faces out into their parking lot near the food trucks (Left Hand does not offer food but the food trucks too) and if you face the right way and it’s clear, a glimpse perhaps of the Rockies.

There is also a small area by that patio showcasing local artwork, a small merchandise store, and then it opens up into a long main bar that proudly displays certificates of various bartenders who have gotten beer cicerone status and has two areas to pull taps, plus that’s where the cask conditioned beers are in the back of the main bar. The TV displays upcoming events, varying from their monthly free yoga session to celebrating/promoting women in beer with Ales 4 FemAles.

There is a lovely back outdoor patio that also looks out into some cornhole too.

I love the detail of the “handy” custom fence, as well as the left hand in other design motifs throughout the tasting room. It really says something to me that a brewery puts this much attention to detail to their environment.

When you get a flight of beer, they thoughtfully provide laminated cards to help mark which beer is which as well as provide descriptions.

In the restroom, there is a little handle so you can open the bathroom door with your foot instead of having to use a dirty door handle. I like the way they still celebrate beer even in their bathroom stalls with their stalls showcasing grains.

At only a 45 minute drive from Denver, Left Hand is definitely worth a visit, and while you’re out here and making your way back to Denver, there are 2 other stops I recommend…

Oskar Blues

At only a 10 minute drive away from Left Hand, it makes sense that if you’re out here, you might as well visit Oskar Blues Brewery. There are two possible places to visit- either their restaurant/foodery locations, which offers beer and food (Home Made Liquids and Solids offers Cajun and Creole food as well as burgers, bbq, and pizzas, while the other Longmont location of CyclHops focuses on a celebration of bicycling as well as tacos and tequila with their beer, and third foodery CHUBurger specializes in burgers and their beer) or you can go to the brewery and canning location and tasting room, the Tasty Weasel.

We went to the Tasty Weasel as we were saving lunch to be at our next stop. All these locations have their attitude of laid back casual.

At the Tasty Weasel, as soon as you walk in to your left you can watch their can production, and some skeeball.

Meanwhile, the main long bar area with lots of tables and huge patio area (you can see a glimpse behind the sampler tray) expresses their attitude of completely laid back, like a mix between industrial hard working brewery and canning facility but the bro-ness fun of a friendly frat house. Notice the tons of stickers in support of their fellow brewery friends, and the creepy mannequin in the window looking into their tanks.

Make sure you check not just beers listed on the main board, but the smaller Specialty Beers board on the right side.

You will also see that they are really proud to totally use cans instead of bottles – even their tap handles proudly showcase this.

As always, I suggest getting tasters of beer in order to sample the most. You will also notice they have big bins of peanuts for you to enjoy for free as you drink their beer. My favorite here is the Ten Fidy, with second place going to Old Chub.

Tasty Weasel doesn’t serve any food themselves, though they will often have a tent from a food vendor onsite grilling up sausages for instance – if you want food with your Oskar Blues beer visit one of their foodery locations as Tasty Weasel is focused more on being a tasting room.

Avery Brewing

With 30 some taps, Avery Brewing has the biggest and nicest facilities of the 3 beer visits outside Denver.

They just opened a new facility earlier this year which now features two giant tasting rooms – one on the first floor outside where you can sit on the grass and patio furniture enjoying the outside. It has lost some of the coziness of the smaller original brewpub all wood location, but greatly expanded the space in the new grander warehouse-like building.

Or go upstairs past the merchandise store to where there is a full fledged brewpub restaurant with food created with matching their beers in mind.

Their offerings of beer are a large variety from German style to Belgians to sours and tarts with Brett or aged in barrels that include for instance

  • Seducer – a sessionalbe apple-beer hybrid
  • Liliko’i Kepolo – a witbier with tropical passionfruit
  • 10lb Strawberry Sour – a Belgian style wit with 10 pounds of fresh strawberries per keg and then soured in neutral oak barrels
  • White Rascal Belgian Style White Ale – unfiltered and spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel
  • San Juan Sour – Ross and Rachel’s wedding beer inspired after their favorite Efrain’s cocktail the “Pink Cadillac Margarita”
  • Nora – an intensely sour pumpkin ale aged for 9 months in neutral wine barrels
  • III Dolia – a sour blend aged in a combination of Maderia, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carcavelos barrels which are the rarest and most expensive barrels Avery has very filled

  • Smothered Cheese Curds and Potatoes, with cheese curds, spiced fingerlings, and andouille gravy
  • Cheeseburger with ground chuck, smoked gouda, sherry greens, pickles, stout onions, and choice of a side (here you see pork belly green beans
  • Sloppy Seitan with barbecue seitan, pickled vegetables on a sesame bun with a choice of side (here spiced fingerlings)

Of all the breweries in Denver we visited, this was my favorite. I would call this a must visit every time I’m in the area, even on revisits.

Which of these three breweries style of tasting room appeals the most to you and why?

I’ll still pick Portland as the winningest beercation city in the US though. 🙂
