My picks for Portland Fruit Beer Festival 2015

I had an opportunity to sample a few of the beers at a Media Preview, though a few of my picks are also based on the description of the beer and reputation of the brewery. If you are attending the Portland Fruit Beer Festival 2015 this year, which runs Friday June 12 to Sunday June 14, here is a quick summary of the logistics and my picks of the most interesting beers for Portland Fruit Beer Festival 2015.
Portland Fruit Beer Festival 2015

Portland Fruit Beer Festival Main Facts

  • Days and Hours of Operation:
    • Friday June 12th 4pm – 9pm

    • Sunday June 14th 11am – 6pm (special kegs will be tapped Sunday)
  • Location: 7th and NE Burnside, which is at Burnside Brewing and also the extra lot (Sat and Sun only) to give more room this year to spread out!
  • Cost: $20 for for one 21+ entry  12 tickets and a collectible 16oz glass. Pech’s Portland Fruit Beer Festival Beer Picks

The reality is that I plan to go more than 1 day, and I will probably taste everything (and re-taste even the ones I previewed as it’s been an additional week so it could have changed). But, I thought by giving a few highlights you can get a little hint at what’s in store this year, and make you want to check out the full beer/cider list here yourself!

  • This year, the Portland Fruit Beer Festival is releasing a special collaboration beer bottle that will only be available in limited quantity at the fest in draft and bottle form. I had a chance to taste this beer, named Fruit of the Garden of Good and Evil, at the Media Preview and it is spectacular. The beer is a collaboration between Burnside Brewing Co. Sweet Heat and Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider Ghost Chili Tepache. The way I would describe it is that it has the nose and tastes vaguely similar to when you go to a Brazilian steakhouse and they have those grilled pineapples that are juicy and sweet with a bit of sugar and spice with cinnamon… well this beer is like that but better because of the spicy heat from the Ghost peppers, Scotch Bonnet peppers, and Aji peppers that are contributed by the chilis usually present in Sweet Heat and  Ghost Chili Tepache.
Portland Fruit Beer Festival bottle label for Fruit of the Garden of Good and Evil
Available in 22 ounce bottles only at Burnside Brewing during the Fruit Beer Fest for $7 (only 60 cases made), with limited draft poured at the festival, Reverend Nat’s taproom, and special events in the future TBD… I would get the bottles right away when entering myself, but be wary because of the heat that this might blow your palate away so maybe save to drink later after you’ve had all the lighter fruit beers.
  • I can’t help but go “squeeee” whenever I see female brewers, and the Peaches of Immortality Farmhouse Ale Burnside Brewing is pouring at the fest this year is nicely tart and sour where finally I can taste the peachy flavor (peaches are so delicate and often get lost in beer) along with the French saison yeast. Yay Natalie! She has already put some in a Ransom Gin Barrel with peaches and other goodness that she is setting aside so I look forward to stalking to see what becomes of that batch in a few months.
Natalie Baldwin of Burnside Brewing talks about Peaches of Immortality at the Media Preview for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival
  • Ecliptic Brewing‘s is premiering Ultra Violet Blackberry Sour Ale which don’t worry, is not very sour. It has just enough sour to be crisp and balance the Oregon blackberries to make for a very refreshing beer that is dangerous because it tastes much lighter than the 7.5% ABV it punches at. Also, though this is probably no big deal to brewer John Harris ha ha, I thought it was the prettiest beer at the Media Preview.
The lovely color of the Ecliptic Brewing Ultra Violet Blackberry Sour Ale at the Media Preview for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival John Harris of Ecliptic Brewing talks about Ultra Violet Blackberry Sour Ale at the Media Preview for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival
  • For an entirely different take on berries (though John used Oregon Fruit Products puree, while Brendan used Columbia Fruit frozen berries), try the ballsy Alameda Brewing‘s Berried By Night Marionberry CDA. Brendan took a big risk by combining Marion blackberries with 7 varieties of hops into this Cascadian Dark Ale – dark and roasty like a porter, some of the hoppiness of the IPA but balanced by those blackberries which you can definitely taste at the tail end after the initial hops and caramel malt. What a surprisingly winning combo.
Alameda Brewing's Brendan Ford-Sala talks about Berired By Night Marionberry CDA at the Media Preview for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival
  • I love dark beers, so seeing a stout on the list will get my attention. Upright Brewing is presenting their B.B. Stout, which is a stout with over 200 pounds of blueberry.
  • I haven’t had a chance to taste it yet, but I generally enjoy the beers of Breakside Brewery so their Tropical Fruit Salad Quasi IPA Six Fruit Blend is making my list for it’s attempt to reverse engineer to match the flavors and aromas of fruits that hops sometimes have with six actual fruits.
  • The Widmer Brothers Brewing Fresh Strawberries Farmhouse Saison with Strawberries is a tasty collaboration with Coda Brewing from Colorado, the winner of the startup brewery challenge to travel up to Portland and become Widmer’s “Brother for a Day”. This takes the Sleepyhead Passionfruit Imperial Kolsch that Coda does (and which took home a silver medal at the 2014 Great American Beer Fest) and combines it now with strawberries and French Saison yeast
  • Not a beer, but I’m a big fan of 2 Towns Ciderhouse of Corvallis as they are always creating interesting combinations with their ciders. For the fest they will debut the Peach Saison Cider that blends a mix of a blend of several northwest apples (many which don’t admittedly taste good on their own in apple form, but great as a cider) blended with Oregon white peaches and French saison yeast. It’s simply a mix of “good fruit, good cider” Kevin explained.
Kevin Hood of 2 Towns Ciderhouse talks about Peach Saison Cider at the Media Preview for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival
  • One of the reserve kegs tapping on Sunday only is the Bogman’s Cranberry Brett Cider by Cider   Riot! with traditional Yamhill county English cider apples, Oregon cranberry and inoculated with Cherry cider. At 3pm Sunday they’ll tap their firkin.
  • Other rare beer tapping on Sunday to lure you in included Hopworks One Tun Tomato Michelada made with Totally radler, chili powder, Worchestershire sauce, house made blood mary mix, and tabasco and (questionable qualification as fruit beer, though the beer itself is interesting to me) New Belgium Brewing Bourbon barrel-aged Salted Chocolate Stout Nitro keg poured through a Randall filled with black cherries
  • I haven’t had this yet, but the idea of the Hi-Wheel Wine & Mead Co. Kiwi Lime sounds super refreshing. I love lime-ade, so their beverage for the fest of a tart fizzy wine made from fresh lime juice and kiwi that is carbonated seems like a promise to cool off with deliciousness.

Definitely a theme I saw this year is a lot of kettle souring (read more about kettle souring at this great article at the New School website “How Kettle Souring Is Making Sour Beer Cheap and Affordable”), a lot of Nancy’s yogurt (yay choose and support local!), and French saison yeast.

Are you a fruit beer fan? What fruit beers from the Portland Fruit Beer Festival (or cider) sound intriguing to you?

Disclosure: I attended a Media Preview so I was able to taste the beers for free, but I purchased my own ticket to the Portland Fruit Beer Festival with no discount and this post was written because I enjoyed the beer – I was not asked or required to write it. I will always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences I may be given. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.

Craft Brewers Conference Beer and Food Events

Next week from April 14-17 is the Craft Brewers Conference in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center. This means next week 10,000+ craft brewers and industry people related to craft breweries and brewpubs will all be descending to PDX from all over the US and multiple parts of the world. How does this affect you?

Well, you can expect that many of the breweries that are unique to Portland and/or nearby the convention center are going to get even busier then usual – Cascade Brewing, I am especially looking at you who is also doing a Cascade Brewing Sour & Wild Invitational special beer tappings all week from April 14-18.

You can expect the extra crowds to happen even before April 14 as many will probably fly in slightly before the conference, and/or may stay slightly after the conference as well.

But also, there’s a huge amount of special beer events, including beers that these brewers are bringing from wherever they are coming from, all over the city next week! There are many meet the brewers events, places that special beers are tapping, and my favorite, beer pairing events bringing together craft beers and foods. Beer and Food is totally my thing.
Fort George 3 Way IPA, paired with this delicious course from Whole Foods Pearl of Scallops with pea puree and greens  Whole Foods Pearl Brewery dinners, this one is with Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB). Dessert started with a honey herb butter custard with lavendar sage rosemary and thyme (and winner of a Whole Foods department ice cream competition) with house shortbread with many of those same herbs, then paired with Hopworks' Notorious FIG, a Belgian Dark Strong Ale that uses 30 lbs of organic fig

You can see a list of the activities on the Craft Brewers Conference/CBC Website, but a few highlights I thought I would share of the Craft Brewers Conference Beer and Food Events list:

  • Or, about sour and coffee beers for Saturday brunch instead? Hop & Vine is hosting a Sour Sunrise w/ Sante Adairius, Rare Barrel & Almanac brunch that starts this funky brunch with sour beers with a flight of “mimosa-esque” apricot sours, followed by a “coffee-ish” trio of dark sours, all to accompany a special Hop & Vine brunch lineup to compliment the flights from these three California breweries. Each flight offers three 5 ounce pours. Hop & Vine will be offering 3 seatings for this brunch at 10:30 AM, 12 noon, and 1:30 PM. The reservation is only necessary for the member(s) of your party who will be partaking in the flights/brunch pairing, they have a limited amount of the beer and brunch servings available. An additional brunch menu and full drink menu will also be available. Reserve your spot(s) in person at the Hop & Vine on Sunday, April 12th or make reservations earlier (my recommendation, you pay upfront but gratuity is already included in the presale price) at this link here. Brunch and the two flights are $30 for the beer only and then $20 for the food for $50 total for both. There is also a vegetarian option available for this brunch food (though as noted, you can also decide to offer item from their other brunch menu instead of the pairing one)

So yeah, there’s a lot going on. I didn’t even list the special beer events because then this would be 10 pages long. If you’ve ever wanted to try a beer pairing of beer and food, I can help you out with this list, but you’re on your own looking the rest up for beer only events!

If you are interested, make reservations ASAP because as of this blog post one dinner (Wild Side at Imperial) already sold out and I expect other Beer Food Events to do the same.

I’ll be going to the Bruery Brewery and Coquine Supper Club dinner at Imperial Bottle Shop and Taproom on Friday – that was the one that really stood out to me. I also might try to make Interurban on Thursday because I am highly interested in Trinity beers, and at Culmination on Saturday The Baker’s Dozen as those coffee beers sound really fun paired with doughnuts, though I am equally torn by the Hop & Vine Sour Sunrise Brunch – do I dare do both? Add to this that I also have multiple other events on my calendar (3 a night!) so let’s see how my palate (and my liver) feel.

Zwickelmania 2014 Overview

To start your Zwickelmania 2014 Overview, let’s start with the date. 11am-4pm, February 15, is Zwickelmania. This event occurs all throughout the state of Oregon, not just in Portland.

In case you have never heard of it, it is the annual one day a year sponsored by the Oregon Brewers Guild where breweries in Oregon open their doors for visitors to sample one (or possibly more) of their beers and often offer tours of their breweries and have brewers on hand to answer question about their process- all for free!

Zwickelmania 2014 is Saturday Feb 15 all over Oregon

There are even shuttles (most are free, only the three Rogue shuttles in Portland  are $5 for all day designated driving) that you can take to brewpub crawl to visit multiple breweries. Check out the list of breweries and a map of the shuttles here at the Oregon Craft Beer website. They have a great map of the entire state of Oregon listing all the brewery open houses and events statewide.

This year, I’m going off to Eugene for Zwickelmania to attend the Oakshire Brewing’s Hellshire IV release party/Hellshire IV Day and Barrel-Aged Beer Fest. We plan to take advantage of doing a little getaway, both for Valentine’s and because it’s a 3 Day President’s Day long weekend. This Oakshire festival offers more than 50 barrel-aged beers from breweries around the country, live local bands and food carts. F and I are big fans of barrel aged beers, so this seemed right up our alley.

You can see the list of available beers on their Facebook event for this. Oakshire’s Hellshire is a series of beers matured in spirits barrels {bourbon, whiskey, and brandy} and released every February. There is also several other breweries in Eugene that are open besides Oakshire- and a Rogue shuttle could possible help us travel to also visit Rogue, Falling Sky Brewery, McMenamin’s High St, Ninkasi, and Hop Valley Brewing.
"Hellshire

I also know some people are heading out to Astoria for the Fort George Festival of the Dark Arts which features feature 55 specialty stouts to also celebrate the fact February is Stout Month. Other breweries in Astoria include Buoy Beer and Rogue at Pier 39. If you are interested, last I checked tickets were still available for a Brewvana tour that is going to this festival from Portland and can provide VIP Tickets to the festival AND transportation to and from Astoria and lodging for the night if you are interested!
Fort George Festival of the Dark Arts

But you don’t necessarily have to go that far- there are so many wonderful breweries in Portland alone – which is why there are FIVE shuttle bus routes to help you visit various breweries. BeerMusingKris helpfully made a Google Map of everything- check out the link to it on her blog post “Can You Tell Me How to Get, How to Get to Zwickelmania?”

You don’t even necessarily have to take a shuttle- as I recapped in a post last year my little group of friends walked or just used the Streetcar between Upright Brewing, Hair of the Dog Brewing, Cascade Brewing for a palate cleanser of sour beers, Harvester Brewing (which is entirely dedicated to being gluten-free both in beer and their gastropub), and The Commons before finishing up at Base Camp Brewing. I thought there were excellent beers to be had at all those stops.

In the Zwickelmania of 2011 (with my more amateur blog recapping), I took the shuttle with a friend, and one of the stops included Laurelwood Brewpub where they offered up pairings of beer samples with sweet desserts!

Very awesome- such as below, with a chocolate cupcake with chili is paired with the Laurelwood vanilla porter, and our favorite pairing a smokey ginger and bacon cookie sandwich with maple cream filling, paired with the bourbon barrel aged Olde Reliable barley wine.

This is smokey ginger and bacon cookie sandwich with maple cream filling, paired with the bourbon barrel aged Olde Reliable barley wine.

Other stops at the time in 2011 for the Brewvana shuttle also included Columbia River Brewing, Alameda, Upright and then we had more beer/dinner at Burnside Brewing. Trust Brewvana to pick out some pretty cool breweries, and their bus is awesome- I’ve been on it a few times since being introduced at Zwickelmania by taking some of their beer tours! This year, Laurelwood is on their route again- as are Ecliptic for instance, and other cool breweries!

So there is a list of some of the places I visited that I recommend. There are other breweries participating too- consult what is convenient or interesting to you.

Wherever you decide to go to enjoy Zwickelmania, follow me on Twitter, Instagram or Untappd to see what I’m up to, and be sure to share your experience on Twitter and Instagram using the #zwickel14 hashtag.

Is there a brewery you are planning to visit for Zwickelmania this year?
