June is California Avocado Month, when California Avocados are at peak availability. So to celebrate, here’s a look at the Avocado Month Specials at Pine Street Market from June 1-30. Pine Street Market is a food hall located in downtown Portland which is like the next level food court – picture a common dining area in the center, but nine micro-restaurants rather then the usual fast chain places you’d find in a mall. Half are participating in Avocado Month.
Pine Street Market is one of two food halls celebrating Avocado Month in conjunction with California Avocado Commission – the other is Los Angeles’ Grand Central Market, where Sari Sari Store, DTLA Cheese, Golden Road Brewing Company, Horse Thief BBQ, Olio GCM Wood Fired Pizzeria, Prawn, and Ramen Hood are getting into the avocado specials Here in Portland at Pine Street Market, you’ll find serving California Avocado Month specials Bless Your Heart Burger, Checkerboard Pizza, Olympia Provisions Public House Annex, and Wiz Bang Bar.
Sari Sari Store and Wiz Bang Bar additionally are sharing a special recipe highlighting avocado: Chicken Adobo and California Avocado Fried Rice Topped with Pickled Vegetables from Margarita Manzke of Sari Sari Store, and from Kim Malek of Wiz Bang Bar, get the recipe for Wild Berry Frozen Yogurt & California Avocado Lime Fudge Parfait. Or take it easy (I did…) by instead of making the recipe just going straight to the source, at least for June!
What I love about Pine Street Market (and Grand Central Market) is how easy it is to do a food crawl and try different foods from different vendors, all in one place. You go to the counter of each restaurant to place your order and usually get a number of some sort or pager so you know when to retrieve your dish or they will bring it to you. Don’t hesitate to go to multiple storefronts to place your order and have a couple of numbers at your seat- I have! Here’s how to enjoy the avocado month specials at Pine Street Market.
Step 1: California Avocado and Little Gem Caesar
First, stop at Checkerboard Pizza to get their California Avocado and Little Gem Caesar with Meyer Lemon & Calabrian Chili marinated California Avocado, country bread croutons and Grana Padano.
Don’t let the casual name of Checkerboard fool you – the breads (including used for the croutons here – the country bread is a blend of white wheat, spelt, whole wheat, type 85, and whole rye flours) and pizza here are from Portland pizza institution and James Beard Award-winner Ken Forkish. Operates Sun-Thurs 11 AM – 9 PM, Fri-Sat 11 AM-10 PM.
Step 2: Oregon Bay Shrimp Roll with California Avocado
Next, turn around to the center area, where you’ll find the Olympia Provisions Public House Annex, specializing in sausages – think Alpine influenced sausages, not just regular hot dogs. Here, you’ll be ordering the Oregon Bay Shrimp Roll with California Avocado which includes Olympia Provisions Andouillie sausage topped with Oregon Bay Shrimp, California Avocado, red onion, jalapeno, shredded lettuce, aioli, old bay seasoning and bread & butter pickles served on a bun.
It’s a pretty big roll – you can easily cut it into 4 to share with friends! Operates Mon-Fri 11 AM – 10 PM, Sat-Sun 10 AM-10 PM.
Step 3: California Avocado Bacon Burger with Ranch
Bless Your Heart Burgers, open 10AM -11 PM daily, specializes in Carolina style cheeseburgers and fries 90’s-style cocktails (including cocktail slushys!) and house made sodas. For Avocado Month, they are putting together a special version of the cheeseburger stacked with North West Natural Beef, Bacon, California avocado on the Martin’s potato roll, with Duke’s mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, sweet onions, homemade pickles and house made ranch.
You could cut your burger to share with others – but let me tell you that you won’t want to. Everyone should get their own burger! Seriously this is one of my favorite burger places in Portland, and it’s delivery of Carolina style with the imported roll and mayo is unique in Portland – otherwise get on a plane and fly back east!
Step 4: Wild Berry Frozen Yogurt and California Avocado Lime Fudge Parfait
Wrap it up with a refreshing dessert by Salt and Straw’s soft serve spot Wiz Bang Bar and their Wild Berry Frozen Yogurt and California Avocado Lime Fudge Parfait with pacific northwest wild berries and California avocado lime fudge. Scooping it up for you Sun-Thurs 11 AM – 10 PM, Fri-Sat 11 AM-11 PM.

Disclosure: I attended a media preview of these specials, but I will be going back to get that cheeseburger on my own dime! I always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences I may be given. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.
