Feast Portland: Late Night Tillamook Comfort Call

Feastivus is almost here! Feast Portland is only a day away! Eeeeeeee!!!!! It’s Feast Eve!!!

Feast, of course, is amulti-day food festival raising money for Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry Campaign and Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon September 19-22. 2013.

I just found out about some great stuff Tillamook Cheese has planned for Feast, and wanted to share with all my other cheese lover readers. In fact, I mean this literally- find me during Feast and let’s have some TIllamook cheese together! Here are the deets about the cheese:

Last year and this year, Tillamook is one of the sponsors of Feast. As they explained here in their blog post Loaf Life: Comfort Call: “Tillamook, being the cheese-nerds that we are, couldn’t just hand out samples. Yes, we wanted to hand out samples, but we couldn’t just stop there. The next logical choice was, of course, grilled cheese sandwiches.”

Yes, of course Tillamook. That is the next logical choice. Hot melty cheese a la Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Tillamook Cheese.

The concept of the Tillamook Comfort Call is that Tillamook plans to hand out a certain number of special phones (“Tillaphones”) for Feast which are a direct line to calling in a grilled cheese emergency and ordering a grilled cheese delivered to you (assuming you are in the appropriate radius of the Feast festival) during the late night hours (11pm-3am) on Friday and Saturday of Feast.

Tillamook handed out special flip-phones at Feast Portland whose sole purpose was ordering a grilled cheese sandwich from Tillamook between midnight and 3am – just when you need it most!

LOVE. LOVE.

I hope to see if I can acquire a Tillaphone, and make a Tillamook Comfort Call! Then you should look for me at the ChefStable after party and Portland Penny Diner Popup party on Fri and Sat late night so I can “Share the Loaf”- i.e. share the Tillaphone so other Feast attendees can enjoy Comfort Call too. Just let me take a photo of the deliciousness, ok? If I can’t acquire a Tillaphone, I am so stalking Urban Bliss Life- check out her informative post on Tillamook and Feast too! She is sweet, smart, and will surely be enjoyable company while enjoying melty cheese.

So what’s on the Tillaphone menu?

  • The Triple Threat Grilled Cheese – Tillamook Colby Jack, Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar and Sharp Cheddar Cheeses
  • Sweet & Spicy BBQ Grilled Cheese – Tillamook Sharp Cheddar and Pepper Jack cheese with caramelized onions, BBQ sauce and bacon
  • Dessert Grilled Cheese?

That’s right, a Dessert Grilled Cheese!

Tillamook will be sampling three dessert grilled cheeses at the Widmer Brothers Brewing Sandwich Invitational Presented by Lincoln Motor Co (tickets sold out). Attendees will get to sample and vote for their favorite at the event through social media, and the fan favorite will be featured on the Comfort Call menu. The contenders for the dessert grilled cheese are:

  • The Dark Chocolate Ginger – Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar with dark chocolate and candied ginger
  • The Ooey-Gooey – Chocolate covered pretzels with bananas, peanut butter and Tillamook Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • The Marionberry Waffle – Tillamook Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese and Marionberry compote on Ego waffles

Thankfully, I also already bought myself a ticket to the Sandwich Invitatational (which I blogged about here), so I will report back on on these sandwiches, and will stalk around looking for a Tillaphone, hopefully to participate in a Tillamook Comfort Call! I hope to sample all these sandwiches. I am a dedicated reviewer of cheese.

Besides the Sandwich Invitational, Tillamook will also be present at the Oregon Bounty Grand Tasting on Friday and Saturday September 20, 21, offering cheese samples of the Tillamook Sharp Cheddar and Monterey Jack. Keep in mind that Tillamook’s Sharp Cheddar won “America’s Best” at the 2013 United States Championship Cheese Contest (as did their Vintage White Extra Sharp Cheddar and Colby Jack). The Monterey Jack won “America’s Best” at the 2011 United States Championship Cheese Contest.

Make sure you keep apprised on Twitter by following @TillamookCheese! The Tillamook County Creamery Association is a cooperative of 110 dairy farming families since 1909, and their products are made with only the highest quality milk from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones. You can feel good about supporting local as you eat their delicious products.

You know what else you could do when you visit Tillamook at the Grand Tasting? Get this… they are offering the ability to grill your face onto a grilled cheese sandwich. Ok, grill your face digitally, but still!

If you are looking for me at Feast, my current Feast schedule includes the Widmer Sandwich Invitational (sold out), both days of the Oregon Bounty Grand Tasting presented by Alaska Airlines (tickets still available for Friday and for Saturday!), the Cookbook Social (free/$5 donation) on Friday- for a list of the various authors attending and what they wrote, check out my cookbook lineup homework here.

For Saturday, besides the Grand Tasting I will also be at the Whole Foods Best Butcher Contest and Fishmonger Faceoff (free!) and High Comfort at the Nines by Portland Monthly (tickets sold out). Both Fri and Sat I will be at most of the various Speaker Series events (tickets available, $10 each), and also the ChefStable after party and Portland Penny Diner Popup party. The Portland Penny Diner Popup mentioned is not a ticketed event: you can read more about them and other unofficial Feast events here at Eater Where to Eat During Feast Portland 2013. And I might be at more! Check out where I am on foursquare or @pechluck on Twitter!

What do you think of the 5 Tillamook grilled cheese creations above? Which would you pick to try for your Tillamook booty call?

Update! Recap:

Disclosure: I was granted a Bloggers Pass for Feast Portland 2013 which grants me access to the Media Lounge and Grand Tastings and Speaker Series. I was asked to help promote Feast but they did not require that I write this post and I am not otherwise being compensated.

The tickets to the Sandwich Invitational and High Comfort at the Nines were purchased out of my own pocket. I have no affiliation with Tillamook except that I love their products, and they make cheese, I love cheese, and so I wanted to promote what they are doing at Feast. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own, and I will always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences regardless of whether they were complimentary or not.

Do you have your tickets for the Friday or Saturday Oregon Bounty Grand Tasting at Pioneer Courthouse Square yet? Can you believe it’s just in four days?!!?? I feel like it’s Foodie Christmas.

As I covered previously, the Oregon Bounty Grand Tasting presented by by Alaska Airlines transforms Portland’s “living room” square in the middle of downtown Portland into a two day food festival with demos and tastings celebrating offerings of the Northwest.  A dozen breweries, 32 wine producers, and 15 local Northwest producers will be present for sampling and discuss their craft, plus more!!

The goal of Feast Portland is to raise money for two Portland charity partners focused on fighting hunger: Share Our Strength and Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. So participating in the Oregon Grand Bounty Tasting is nourishment for yourself as well as others.

Tickets are $60 and the event takes place as part of Feast Portland on two days, Friday, September 20th and Saturday, Sept 21st 12:00pm – 5:00pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Please note that each day is a different all inclusive ticket. Your entrance ticket grants you all inclusive access to sample and learn about it all inside. Yes, look at the wonderful morsels in store, as evidenced by last year!

If the $60 price is too dear for you, you can still enjoy Feast. Other affordable events to consider include the Speaker Panel Series where each event is $10, the Cookbook Social that is free/suggested donation of $5, or the free Whole Foods Best Butcher Contest/Fishmonger Faceoff, as covered in previous posts I wrote- just copy my homework!

There will also be unofficial events, such as the current creative ice cream flavors at Ruby Jewel and Salt & Straw which are already available at their respective locations. If you vote for the Ruby Jewel ice cream before Thursday, you may even win a ticket to the Grand Tasting- check it out!

Meanwhile, I have a few more new details about the Grand Tasting, so thought I would share them. There are special guests which are appearing Friday and Saturday, and here is the tentative schedule I have seen so far for the KitchenAid Main Demo Stage:

Feast Ice Cream! (Unofficial to Feast Portland)

Feast Portland is almost here! Feast is almost here (September 19-22, 2013)! Feast Feast Feast!

A few unofficial Feast ice cream events are currently happening in Portland that you can catch. I thought I would point these out particularly because even though it’s mid-September, it is 90 degrees out. Whaaaa!!??

1. Ruby Jewel Scoops: Best of the Northwest Ice Cream Contest

From September 9 through 17 from noon to 11 pm at the two Ruby Jewel Scoops locations (3713 N Mississippi St and 428 SW 12th Ave) you can join in to cast your ballot for your favorite Northwest Ice Cream inspired ice cream flavor. All of these ice cream flavors celebrate local Northwest ingredients. You can try the four contending flavors, which include

  • Garden Tomato with Basil (seriously, it tastes just like a farmers market fresh caprese salad)
  • Hazelnut with Honey Bar
  • Chevre with Spiced Peach Jam
  • Espresso with Housemade Chocolate Covered Almond Brittle

Feast Ice Cream selection, Ruby Jewel Scoops Best of the Northwest Ice Cream Contest

The ingredients in the ice cream celebrate and support other local artisans, such as nuts from Freddy Guy Hazelnuts, honey bar from Beans and Bees, the chevre from Portland Creamery, peaches from Baird Family Peaches, and espresso from Nossa Familia Coffee Roasters.

As if eating the ice cream isn’t enough incentive, participating voters will be entered to win a ticket to the Feast Grand Bounty Tasting (which I previously wrote about here, in case you want to check it out) and three pints of ice cream.

Ruby Jewel will be present at the Widmer Brothers Sandwich Invitational at Directors Park on Thu Sept 19 6-9pm (which I previously blogged about here). The tickets just sold out to the Sandwich Invitational yesterday on the 12th, but you still have a chance to try out what Ruby might be offering at this event, which was $95 a ticket. Visit one of their two locations now, plus win a possible ticket to the Grand Tasting! The winner will be randomly selected on September 18, so get in there, taste and vote!

2. Salt and Straw Guest Chef Collaboration Series #2

For the month of September, Salt and Straw is doing their Second Annual Guest Chef Series! They have five new limited edition ice creams made in collaboration with world-renowned chefs participating in Portland’s Feast Food Festival that are special just for this month. A portion of the proceeds from these flavors are donated to Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon.

Feast Ice Cream, Salt & Straw's September 2013 Guest Chef Collaboration Series with Loaded Baked Potato, a flavor collaboration that includes the flavors of Loaded Baked Potato, Sweet Corn, Waffle Cones & Caramel, Mint Leaves with Sea Urchin Meringues, Hawaiian PB&J, Coconut Milk with Cashew Brittle & Pandan

  • Loaded Baked Potato, a flavor collaboration with Michael Voltaggio that “on a playful note, where savory collides with sweet” is loaded with bacon chocolate crumbs, onion juice caramel, and white cheddar cookie dough.
  • Sweet Corn, Waffle Cones & Caramel, a flavor collaboration  with April Bloomfield that has sweet corn as the foundation and then folds in chocolate covered waffle cones, salted brown butter, and ribbons of vanilla caramel
  • Mint Leaves with Sea Urchin Meringues, a flavor collaboration  with Jenn Louis with west coast harvested sea urchin and fruity Italian pimente d’espelet that are utilized to make little meringues then folded into the steeped in mint leaves ice cream
  • Hawaiian PB&J, a flavor collaboration  with Gabe Rucker, which translates to toasted bark from a Heart of Palm tree, peanut butter crumbles, and caramelized pineapple jelly
  • Coconut Milk with Cashew Brittle & Pandan, a flavor collaboration  with Gregory Gourdet which results in a vegan ice cream built on a coconut ice cream foundation with spiced, candied, and compressed pineapples, hand-burned cilantro-pandan caramel, and crunchy brittle spiked with red Thai chilies.

CRAZY right? INTRIGUED? I am! You can check out these flavors at Scoop shops at 3345 SE Division St, 2035 NE Alberta St, or 838 NW 23rd Ave. Salt and Straw is also one of the participants for the Oregon Grand Bounty Tasting on Fri and Sat 20/21 12:00pm – 5:00pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Tickets for this event ($60, all inclusive) are still available for the Friday Grand Tasting or Saturday Grand Tasting events!

Now don’t you want some ice cream?

Google City Experts Portland: Best of Portland Party

Disclosure: This event was complimentary, but I will always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences I may be given. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.

Did you know I participate in Google City Experts Portland? I was excited to be invited on Thursday September 12 to attend the Google City Experts Exclusive: Best of Portland Party. Google City Experts provide reviews on Google which can be read when searching on Google Maps. I find this incredibly convenient so that I can search around me right at the moment or planning a trip (such as searching by a meeting or hotel) to see what is around, and reading reviews after searching what I can see is in acceptable travel distance. Google City Experts have already written at least 50 reviews, and need to write at least five new reviews each month. Interested in contributing? Sign up for Google City Experts — goo.gl/hPvvqo

The event was held at ENSO Urban Winery & Tasting Lounge, and included two tastings of wine. Their RESOLUTION white and red were available, similar to a house red and white which are blends; as well as a dozen other options for purchase by the glass or flight options. We opted after using our tickets for a flight of their reserve reds, as well as a cheese plate.

Besides the photo booth, there was cupcake decorating with Cupcake Jones, and tacos and dillas from Taco Pedaler PDX. Meanwhile, Jesse Layne provided some live music. The only thing I could have wished were for some way to charge my phone, as it was running low so even as I learned by the party mode on my Android phone for the first time, I couldn’t participate.

Google City Experts Portland @lessejayne crooning with his smooth voice and raw lyrics in the heat next to cupcakes for #pdxcityexperts . Swoon!

Here are a few pics I snapped while awaiting my turn (and after completing) decorating my cupcakes. Cupcake Jones has vanilla, red velvet, and chocolate (including gluten vegan free options if desired) to select from as the base, and then cream cheese, vanilla, or chocolate icing. This was followed by various topping choices including chopped nuts, marshmallows, housemade graham crackers, toasted coconut, and glitter sugar!

Then it was my turn! They also had little birds in the bold Google colors of blue, green, yellow and red. You could make up to 2 cupcakes, which the lovely ladies helped you package both up to take home, or perhaps only one up because you were going to eat the other right there! What a super adorable idea for an event!

Meanwhile, the ladies of Taco Pedaler and their tricycle carts were working it for us Portland Google Experts as well. The Tacos were on their handmade corn tortillas with choice of chicken, beef, pork or pinto bean. This was then topped with cabbage, cilantro, and cotija cheese! The other option were Dillas: filled with potato, green chilis and cheese all simmered in a drunken sauce.

The Taco Pedaler ladies did a great job of keeping up with the crowd with their system of name/orders on plates all lined up as they were making it fresh on that little grill you see, and the wait was only about 7 minutes after your order. They can do any event- even if it’s not in biking distance.

F was my +1 (Heeee) and had the Dillas, which as mentioned are filled with the filling of the day, which in this case were potato, green chilis and cheese all simmered in a drunken aka cheese beer sauce! Cheese beer sauce you say!?? I had to also have one, though for my second sample I went with a pork taco. I also had some of the Juanitas corn chips and fresh made green and red salsas while listening to Jesse Layne and watching the photo booth station action. I also have now seen two people with Google Glass (the other was in Baltimore, so it was my first Portland sighting).

Lardo Chefwich #5 – only a few days left!

I previously covered other Lardo chefwich sandwiches 1-3 here, and then chefwich #4 of mid July-mid August here. Now here is chefwich #5, mid August – mid September. So you only have a few days left to catch this chefwich!

From Lardo, the Jenn Louis chefwich, a grilled cheese with fontina cheese, plum conserva on Grand Central Bakery sour rye. Also, Lardo Fries and Lardo's Kentucky Lemonade From Lardo, the Jenn Louis chefwich, a grilled cheese with fontina cheese, plum conserva on Grand Central Bakery sour rye.

As noted before, the Chefwich Series is part of a series by Lardo of sandwiches where guest chefs of various Portland restaurants collaborate with Lardo (and Grassa) chef Rick Gencarelli. Each month, a new collaboration sandwich will appear just for that month, and the proceeds of the limited time guest chef sandwich going to benefit the guest chef’s charity of choice. The sandwich is available at either of the two Lardo locations, Lardo West in SW downtown or in Lardo East in the SE.

The plum conserva comes in a container on the side, so I suppose you could choose to dip it. But, I decided to just spread it like a jam on top.
