Cookbook Gift Ideas from Local Female Portland Authors

Recently I highlighted some great food gift ideas created by women makers here in Portland. Today I wanted to highlight some awesome local female cookbook authors who recently have released cookbooks.

This cookbook Easy Soups from Scratch with Quick Breads to Match by Ivy Manning boasts 70 recipes that pairs together soups and breads. The book offers a lot of recipes, with inspirations from all over the world to really open new flavors in soup and bread combinations for your table. For instance, consider South Indian Sambar, or Spicy Ethiopian Red Lentil Soup, or Persian Yogurt, Lentil, and Bulgar Soup with Browned Herb Butter.

Recommendations for Local Food Gifts By Women

It’s already Thanksgiving week! This really marks that the holiday season is upon us. This year, I would like to share my recommendations for local food gifts – gifts that are edible that you can give to friends, family, co-workers that are edible and enjoyable for anyone. All of these items are also produced by local artisans, and on top of that these are all women owned businesses, so you are supporting female entrepreneurs. I was not sponsored by anyone I’m listing here  – I personally recommend all of these products in terms of deliciousness and want to share some amazing products by amazing women.

Fall at the Portland Japanese Garden

I have previously shared some details about the newly updated Portland Japanese Garden. I recommend visiting every season to see how it looks different, and so for autumn I visited the last week of October. This is a little later then I would suggest – peak fall color is usually the 2nd and 3rd week of October, but that’s the best my schedule can do, so what could I do? This meant by the time I arrived the famous Japanese maple tree was already naked, having shed its leaves already, but Fall at the Portland Japanese Garden is still gorgeous – here’s a look at my attempts to capture the visual memories I was seeing during my 1.5 hour visit.

A Recap of Feast Night Market 2017

I gave you a little hint with my My Highlights of Feast 2017 post previously, but here’s a more in depth look of the fantastic dishes of Feast Night Market 2017 this year. I’m a huge fan of Night Market because of the festive atmosphere punctuated by Latin music that keeps you dancing as you enjoy some food that often throws in a little heat (spicy heat that is!) and wash it down with a tequila base drink (or wine, or beer, or whatever else you’d like).

The location of Zidell Yards means you should have appropriate footwear for the gravel ground, but the colors of the sunset with views of the Tillikum Crossing Bridge which then lights up and reflects against the Willamette River is a wonderful way to end the evening. There are chefs that are local as well as from other cities, which is a great chance to try the cuisine of these chefs without the travel costs to those cities. And, although there is a list of chefs for the event, you may find even more bites as chefs are also there working with sponsors offering additional bites! You will definitely get full.

And, it’s all for a good cause – net proceeds of Feast Portland will be donated to our charitable partner, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. That total 2017 festival donation amount will be announced by November. Be sure to mark your calendars for the seventh year of Feast Portland, September 13-16, 2018 – the tickets will go on sale a few months before that and Night Market will probably sell out again so make sure you are ready to purchase your tickets when they go on sale!

My Highlights of Feast Portland 2017

Last week, from Thursday September 14 to Sunday the 17th, was the incredible food festival Feast Portland in Portland that benefits this year’s charitable partner, Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. Over it’s 6 year run since 2012, Feast PDX has raised over $300,000 to help end childhood hunger in Oregon and across the country, not counting the 2017 contribution which is still being tallied. Besides benefiting such an important cause, Feast offers more then food and drink – it brings together food and drink makers and those who enjoy food and drink into a celebratory community.
