How was the dentist?

Well, when I walked in, they were playing Frank Sinatra/Bobby Darin/etc type music, and instead of a clipboard they put the paperwork I needed to fill out into a pleather portfolio on cushy couches and recliners. They had a water tank with mugs and teas, but I don't like to put anything in my mouth until after a dentist appointment- that's why I always always do them before lunch.  Before I went into actual work area from the waiting lounge, the receptionist also used a webcam to take a photo of me for their records.

The x-rays were next- I felt a bit like a little kid as the woman kept saying "good job" and "there you go" as let her put the protective jackets on and then opened and bit down on command. They had a little rack with rainbow colors to hold my purse during this, and a little bowl to put my earrings. The ceiling has fluorescent lights like any other office, but had covers with blue skies and fluffy white clouds on top of them so that each rectangle looked like a skylight instead. The light by me even had dragonflies lined up on a string hanging down from the ceiling to the floor, and the corner where the woman got the protective covering for me during the x-rays was behind one of those curtains you often see in Japanese restaurants that only hang partway down from a doorway… except the pattern of this one was just plain blue, with one rabbit on it.

After the x-rays, she asked whether I wanted relaxing, rejuvenating, or purifying toner (I choose the later) which I rubbed into my hands, and then dipped into a paraffin treatment. It was nice, but at the same time I had my hands in plastic bags that were then covered by silk bags my entire appointment… I felt a bit helpless in the chair, ha ha. Since this wasn't a cleaning, just an initial consultation with the dentist, I didn't sit in the hygenist chairs which are apparently massage chairs. While I waited for my dentist, she put just a drop of arometherapy oils on my temples, and asked what music I wanted to hear from their iShuffle menus- jazz, classical, indie rock… and more, but I don't recall them all. I also got sunglasses so my eyes wouldn't get blinded by the dentist light, how clever! At the end after removing the paraffin and using a warm washcloth on my hands, I also got to choose from a large menu of lipglosses- I ended up with Hershey Chocolate.

The funniest thing for me though was the fact that everyone single person working in the office had an earpiece… when I was done talking to the dentist, I actually heard him walk away and into the microphone say "#4 is ready for checkout".

No Bourdain No!!!

Noooo! Anthony Bourdain shot a segment of his No Reservations show in Chicago… his stops at L20, Avec, Blackbird, and Moto (I've had two of the dishes showcased- the roadkill and deconstructed/reconstructed bbq), he has deep dish pizza at a cool place called Burt's Place which I enjoyed rather much instead of him going to one of the big chains- it had character, and is well loved by LTH Forum, which was my go to expert guide to yummies. And then he went to Hot Doug. Nooo! And he praises their duck fat fries, which are only available on Fridays and Saturdays. Great. Now the lines will be impossible. How could you Tony, how could you. Really watching the meal at L20 made me drool, it seemed out of this world. Also, it was 20 some courses.

Going to Tom Tom's Tamale, the Mother In Law tamele on a bun and Suicide beverage (random mix of every soda) at Fat Johnnie's (that could have served fine as his "wild and crazy" food, if Moto and L20 wasn't amazing but crazy enough because it was fancy), even Calumet Fisheries' smoked fish in greasy white paper bags that is sooo south side (I really wanted some sticky rice to go with it, is that wrong?), I understand. True hidden gem that showcases part of Chicago, though where was the messy Italian beef sandwich? Man, seeing Calument Fisheries reminds me of many a trip my family took to DiCola's Seafood. How did my mom get involved and bring us to that! She doesn't usually try new places, so it had to have been introduced to her.

But meeting Mancow at Silver Palm, having a PBR and that Three Little Pigs sandwich sounded disgusting: a sandwich with smoked ham, breaded pork cutlet, bacon strips, 2 eggs and gruyere on a brioche bun with french fries and onion rings fried in lard- do you feel your heart pumping really hard?

The Chicago cop I understand but what's with Ramova Grill (a missing scene from what actually was on the show)? You could have at least gone to White Palace or Eleven City, though I certainly don't begrudge Ramova as a great neighborhood place and the show covering the south side instead of the trendy north side, but south side is not so monotone. For such a cosmopolitan cultural city, why was he surrounded by white people (exception cute foodie blogger Louisa Chu who was a food fixer and food journalist for his Chicago trip)? And no Maxwell Street Market street food- no, the visit to Tom Tom's is not representative enough.

I had to admire the really great shots of the cityscape the camera crew got. Great shots of the skyline and the el, often combined!

Next Monday's episode is on Food Porn. Is it wrong to be excited?

My New Dentist

So since my move, I haven't had a doctor or dentist, so this past week I made appointments. I wanted to show off my new dentist, who I will be seeing this coming week. Green Apple Dental offer "a relaxing atmosphere, aromatherapy, massage chairs and a wonderful array of complimentary spa amenities". They have apparently their office decorating using colors and based on Feng Shui principles and their spa services include treatment for hands and face as part of their "Healthy Living, Healthy Smiles" philosophy.

That's one way to not make people annoyed/anxious by the thought of going to the dentist- combine it with a wellness center! This week I'm just getting x-rays and an initial consultations- I will have to make another appointment for my next cleaning, which is the only thing I'm a little annoyed at, but they said after the initial consultation if more things need to be done, than they can do them all at once with the cleaning I guess.

They also have really flexible hours- until 7pm on weekdays, and their location is downtown- only a mile away from me.

See… unlike my sisters, who both have moved away, I have no problem with getting new provider. Meanwhile, they make appointments with the same dentist in Chicago and have to fly in. How does that make sense?

Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year! I was hoping to go to the Classical Chinese Gardens, but since there's snow on the ground outside and the heater of my rented townhouse is broken, maybe I'll make it later this week or next weekend. They have fortune telling boxes, chinese lanterns, live chinese music and daily specials like dumpling demos, lantern making, and tea ceremonies until February 8, when they'll set off the floating lanterns. I would like to do some folding dragon card coloring myself. I was born the year of the dragon.

Kitty Luau

Before I left for my vacation, I decided to let the kitties get a holiday treat. I think it is interesting that the product is Hawaiian themed, but it's made in Thailand… and there's no way that anyone in Thailand actually gives food like this to their cats, if they own them, in Thailand. Dogs and cats there get real people food, either scavenged or given to them. When my mom tried to give the kind of "cleaned up" bones you can buy from stores here to the dogs at my grandma's house, several of them ran away, and only one of the dogs (who had run away from home and lived on the street for a bit before coming back) knew immediately what to do with it.

Similarly, Mew didn't know what to do with this… Lobo ate most of it. He really does like the normal dry cat food I give him though… somehow… better than this.
