Nakalele Blowhole Hike, Cafe Mambo of Maui

I’m going to take us back a month… back to my vacation in Hawaii at the end of August, when we were in Maui. We were staying on the west side of the island, about 10 minutes north of the famous town of Lahaina. On one of the days, we decided to rive past Kapalua and around to Paia. This road at one point is very similar to the road to Hana in that it offers lots of narrow spots where it is 1 lane and lots of twists and turns on the curvy road but with also gorgeous views of cliff and oceans and the road is not as crowded as the Hana Highway. One of the major stops we made was at Nakalele Blowhole.

There is a marked stop to view this blowhole, but the water that shoots up from here varies tremendously with the tide- when we finished walking here, it was only a little gurgle, and probably could barely be seen from the official viewpoint. But we had stopped per the Maui Revealed guidebook about 1/2 mile from the 38 mile marker and hiked down. I’ve used these guidebooks from the library on previous visits to Hawaii, and they are amazing in giving information as you drive along a road and pointing out great hidden stops you wouldn’t know about otherwise unless you were a local.

This hike was another example of the value of this guidebook. Despite the disappointing lack of power/water to the blowhole, this hike which promised landscape that “looks like an alien war zone where combatants fought with acid” was still a surreal and unique experience. It’s not what you would expect in Hawaii, but yet it was a welcome break from the sand and sky and waves and greens. Here are some example photos. in order of what we saw as we descended down towards the lighthouse, past cliffs pockmarked with crags and caves, with pounding waves and yet quiet clear pools of water, and then past it to the sea spray ravaged rockscape and the blowhole on this couple mile hike roundtrip:

Billions of tons of sea spray blown by wind has carved up the soft rock here. The land is literally being eaten before us On the way to Nakalele Blowhole, there is an alien landscape On the way to Nakalele Blowhole, there is an alien landscape On the way to Nakalele Blowhole, there is an alien landscape On the way to Nakalele Blowhole, there is an alien landscape On the way to Nakalele Blowhole

After the hike at the Nakalele Blow Hole, I continued driving around the island on that scenic curvy road west to east onward to Paia, enjoying the sites of this windswept part of Maui. Although the forests and foliage are not as lush as Hana on this Highway 30 since it’s not as wet here, we enjoyed the views of untamed shoreline and cliffs and bays, and the valley small town of Kahakuloa where we acquired the best banana bread on the planet from a bright green shack, Julia’s. If you go this way, stop here, you would not believe how melt in your mouth moist this banana bread is.

Before we walked around Paia to explore this little sweet plantation town, we refueled recommended by the folks of the amazing Pulehu Pizza food cart in Portland who used to live in Maui. Knowing their impeccable taste level, we went straight with no hesitation, to the restaurant Cafe Mambo. The atmosphere is eclectic and warm, with lots of local art on the walls.

The menu offers something for every diet. For instance, there is a tofu burger, which unfortunately didn’t mention it used mayo which overwhelmed the subtle fresh flavor of the Sesame & Nori-crusted Tofu. I had the same tofu that went into the burger on the side, which was much more enjoyable.

Other vegetarian or vegan options include from their menu a 7 Vegetable Stew with Cous cous, or a Mediterranean Nut Falafel Sandwich. In fact, all the main proteins they carry- the organic tofu, the island fish of the day, crispy duck, grilled chicken, local steak or kahlua pork, can all be found in their sections for salads, sandwiches, burgers, or fajitas.

The highlight and specific recommendation I loved from a friend who used to live in Maui was for the crispy duck fajitas. Look at that crackling, crispy deliciousness of that duck! You have the choice of ordering for one or two persons, so I obviously ordered the Crispy Duck Fajitas for One. All Fajitas are served with Home-made Salsa, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Feta, Jalapenos, Black Beans, Salad and Flour Tortillas. It comes sizzling to your table, and does have lots of crispy caramelized bits as promised by the name, you will not be disappointed! Seriously a large portion, I don’t know how one person could eat this- I wonder how generous the one for two persons would be!

Cafe Mambo has two locations- Maui and the Hamptons in New York! I’ve only visited the Paia location, and highly recommend it as your meal stop if you are visiting this town.

Photo Retrospective: Eat Mobile 2013

Eat Mobile 2013 on April 27 was the sixth annual food cart festival event, a one price but then all you can sample (but to respect the individual cart owners, one taste per cart) event for charity, sponsored by Willamette Week and OMSI, among others (for instance, I totally covet the waxy chapstick that Yelp offers, and this is why I always lean towards Vitamin Water for flavored waters). With 50 carts participating, even a small bite from each is more than filling. The general admission tickets are a steal for such a meal at $20, but since they sell a few thousand tickets, you should expect the lines… or do as I always do every year, buy the $50 pre-tasting tickets for early entrance for an hour along with complimentary beverages from Pabst Blue Ribbon and Bota Box and move fast!

I always find this worthwhile, and have it marked on my calendar every year as a must do event. I have attended previously as evidenced by my previous blog posts in 2012, in 2011 (which also included opportunities to purchase tickets for a special Friday food cart tour and a Saturday food cart tour I also participated) in conjunction with Forktown Food Tours, and in 2010. As many of you know, I don’t own a car so rely on walking or public transit which means I don’t too far (aka across the river) for unknown food explorations, and working full time in Beaverton means I miss many food cart hours that cater to lunch (sorry the after drinking/dancing late night is too late for me!). So this event is always an exciting way to be introduced to what is out there in food carts for me.

My personal picks for favorites among the tastes I had this year included…

The beautiful taste and design of Cheese & Crack‘s adorable little setup that advertised their cart wares (Portland’s second cheese food cart!) during the festival in a rustic charming way, and their taste was mapped out expertly and presented gorgeously. Cheese & Crack’s taste was Castelvetrano olive mousse, Cana De Oveja cheese, pork terrine, and a chocolate filbert ganache with rock salt all served on a handmade special edition Rustic Butter Cracker. No surprise they won the Eat Mobile 2013 Style Award.

Judge’s Choice award winner La Sangucheria with their empanadas, fried fresh and worth waiting in line for. Though since I paid extra for the pre-tasting (totally worth it because if you come with the larger crowd you will inevitably spend a lot of time waiting in lines), the line was only maybe a handful of people, and later I returned and they had gotten into a better rhythm and had more laid out- though once the regular crowd of you know, thousands came in, there is no avoiding being in the weeds.

Hungry Heart Cupcakes, where I turned away from the obvious choice of the “Sweet n Salty” cupcakes with creamy peanut butter frosting and Carlton Farms applewood smoked bacon to reward myself with the incredible apple panna cotta with hard cider caramel and browned butter blondies. I was surprised they didn’t win people’s choice with their sweet but savory treats.

But I did understand why People’s Choice award winner Garcelon’s Soup & Grilled Cheese did get votes, as the spicy crab chowder was complex in flavor and was so comforting.

I liked the taste from Gamila, offering Moroccan American Cuisine, I appreciated the layering of all the flavors of sweet, salty, savory, even hints of sour, and the warm chicken with the cool sauces.

I appreciated Moberi and their super refreshing smoothies powered by bikes, and the aromas in the air that wafted from Bora Bora’s grilled chicken. I couldn’t find a website for Bora Bora so this Portland Food.org forum thread will have to suffice for you to find out more.

Another sweet temptation was Sugar Shop and their delectable goodies of salted caramel gooey stuffed brownies, molasses spiced cookies, and red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. Also, they had the cutest aprons!

I waited in line to finish all my tastes with ice cream scoops from Scoop and Fifty Licks. I can’t decide between you two, I love you both. At Fifty Licks I had the toasted milk ice cream, while at Scoop I had both the Salted Caramel and the Bourbon Buttered Pecan at Scoop. Sorry, you were too good to only have one taste.

Happy Flower Food Company offered cute little Hummingbird Cake with bananas, pineapple, pecans, cream cheese frosting, I was introduced to the interesting blend of crunch and Indian spices from Masala Pop, Hawaii was cheerfully represented by 808 Grinds and their 808 fried chicken, the Bunk Truck (the mobile truck version of Bunk Sandwiches) gave generous portions of the Cubano sandwich, Taco Pedaler managed making fresh tacos while also offering a chips and salsa bar, Gonzo was rocking some intense sauces with their chickpea fries, and Snoop helped pimp out So Cold Shaved Ice.

It was such an buffet of riches. During the evening, DJ DMoe Funk made waiting so much more fun by giving us music to dance in line or groove to. There was also a culinary stage with presentations of food demonstrations and food science sponsored by Whole Foods and OMSI but I needed to lie down to digest… well at least, after walking briskly back home (I also walked from home to OMSI/Eat Mobile… though I don’t think that burned nearly enough calories to counter what I sampled!)

If any of these pictures intrigues you, please go out and support your local entrepreneurs and visit these food carts! These local businesses work hard to participate in this event and everyday in their food cart (mobile or not), show them that you appreciated the exposure they had at Eat Mobile and give them your money and get some yummy food! You can look up any of these food carts at Food Carts Portland to see what food carts may be in your area and what their menus might offer, and look up reviews and more photos on Yelp Portland and reviews also at Willamette Week.

Photos from Baltimore

Just a photo post.

Views from the Inner Harbor of Baltimore Maryland, which is where I was the first weekend of April for the IA Summit from Thurs-Mon.

Nestled at the end of Pier 5 in the Inner Harbor, the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse was built in 1855 entirely of iron, and is the oldest screw-pile lighthouse in Maryland. It is a Baltimore landmark and famed for its barn red color.

The juxtaposition of these sea serpent paddleboats with the USS Constellation was a hoot for me every time I saw it when I did quick walks around the harbor to try to get some fresh air, clear my head between sessions, and burn a few calories.

I am not enough of a baseball fan to have appreciated the fact that during my visit was opening weekend for the Baltimore baseball team, the Orioles, and so there were many people clad in orange as the Inner Harbor is in walkable distance from Camden Yards. But, I did take the opportunity to do brisk walks to Camden Yards a couple times during my stay of 5 days.

Pulehu Pizza- coming soon to you

At the Saraveza Block 15 Winter Dinner I attended last month, I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of Pierre and Anabelle, a couple who moved from Maui and were planning to open a food cart specializing in oven grilled pizzas with inventive flavor combinations and quality local ingredients. Pierre and Anabelle ran a similar cart in Hawaii, and are bringing it to downtown Portland.

After becoming twitter friends and being tortured with instagrams of their pizzas in practice runs, they had a small pre-launch party this past Sunday and I was so thrilled to be invited. UPDATE: Pulehu is now open at SW 3rd and Stark, check them out for lunch and late night: see their Twitter for updates on their hours of operation!

Both Pierre and Anabelle miraculously balanced being hosts that found some time to chat with guests while also being producers of multiple pizzas to feed us two dozen people most of their planned cart menu! Also, they were going to that same evening to move their cart to its downtown PDX location where they will be opening the Pulehu Pizza food cart SW 3rd and Stark. These two are passionate and so excited to get started. Also thanks to the Hurlimans for opening up their lovely home, and everyone who brought their adorable and so energetic kids who were endlessly fun to watch, like a constant show…

Here are some photos of their creations from that day. The tastings started out with their Caesar salad with homemade croutons. I never got any of the Dark Chocolate Mousse with a velvety vanilla bean creme, but given the way I saw the kids of the house licking the chocolate from their hands and scraping at the cup, and then running off refueled for more time playing soccer or on the trampoline… my conclusion is that that chocolate mousse definitely wasn’t bad… :X

The classic cheese and a pepperoni pizzas were devoured by the kids in mere minutes. The dough and execution on the grill strikes a perfect balance between crispy with a bit of stretchy doughyness still left, and there was never any soggyness in any piece I sampled. The Shepherd’s Grain flour they use for the dough, and sourcing some cheese (if not their homemade ricotta) from Steve’s Cheese Bar or meat from Tails and Trotters speaks to their high quality ingredients that also support other local businesses. Pulehu also plans to explore curing their own meats as well.

The Margherita includes tomato, pesto, and what will be their housemade ricotta. The pesto was so good we wanted more than just the pretty squiggle!

Here is the Mushroom Lovers, with mushroom, housemade ricotta, garlic and herbs, and the extra addition of truffle oil (there is also an option to meatify it with bacon).

Everyone I saw seemed to swoon when they bit into this Cheddar, Chicken, Bacon pizza with a generous dollop of sour cream and sprinkle of green onions.

Somewhere in the middle, I had a chance to visit their  sexy black pizza cart and the shiny (weighing in at a muscular 250 pounds!?!)  “Beast” grill inside which nurtures their pizzas to completion, either at the 8″ or 12″ sizes. Somehow in the excitement to see the pizzas being made, I did not take a snapshot of the cart on the outside- my bad.

The Meat Lovers with pepperoni, sausage, garlic, and grana padano was a big hit and really does celebrate the meat- Pulehu might have to dial it back slightly because seriously, this is a lot of meat! I can barely see the pizza.

Pierre brings this pizza as a representative of his French background: the Alsatian Flamee with a sour cream base, onion and bacon, and here St Nectaire Cheese although Anabelle explained that usually this pizza is served “Natural” just without the cheese, and with the cheese it is usually called a “Gratinee” instead. I’ve had this sorta of pizza before- specifically at Gruner for New Year’s when ringing in 2012, but theirs was a tarte flambee “bonne anee”- alsatian pizza with sweet onions, maine lobster, smoky bacon, fromage blanc & chives.

Even without the lobster, I found the version by Pulehu Pizza better.

The Pulehu Steak Pizza with grilled steak, tomato, garlic, shaft blue cheese and madeira wine sauce was heavenly high quality ingredients, fine dining stuff.

At first, the idea of a dessert pizza sounded bizarre to me. But, I had to admit they looked so delicate and beautiful. And then I put a slice in my mouth and it was so light and refreshing that I thought this was “healthy” and made up for the cheesy pizza bites I had earlier, and see I was getting fruit into my diet! I need another slice! Seriously, this is better than many many desserts I have had at restaurants.

The Strawberries & Creme Pizza with meyer lemon zest and mint… already so delicious, and it isn’t even strawberry season yet.

Apple and Cinnamon pizza… heh some of the slices have already been claimed. This one too disappeared in less than a minute!

The cart is not open yet at SW 3rd and Stark- it is still pending some permits and inspection. But believe me, I am following this carefully because I need some of that pizza again, stat! It’s only been a few hours and I’m already craving that strawberries and creme pizza. I also am very excited with the idea (I hope it may come true once in a while) about being able to even have the opportunity to get any of those creative creations they experiment with and  that I see on their twitter feed once in a while varying from a Reuben Pizza, a breakfast pizza with scrambled eggs and bacon and mushrooms, sauteed elk with sour cream and caramelized sweet cherries…  and back in Hawaii they also did Braised Escargot Pizza, a Gyro Pizza with lamb sauteed in butter and garlic with rosemary, and a Banana Sundae Pizza that included caramelized bananas and housemade salted caramel with a spiced nut crumble and dark chocolate sauce…

Why is this food cart not open yet???? Hurry UP! UPDATE: Pulehu is now open at SW 3rd and Stark, check them out for lunch and late night: see their Twitter for updates on their hours of operation!
