From the creative minds who delivered deliciousness with fun and the embracing of wanting to try multiple tastes on the sample plate via Hunnymilk popup brunch is a new popup, Outer Darkness Donuts. They just launched last weekend on Sunday June 3, and here’s my first look at Outer Darkness Donuts. Similar to Hunnymilk, there are no reservations and it’s best for groups of 2 or 4 or no more then 8 maximum. Outer Darkness Donuts pops up only on Sundays, at Jacqueline (2039 SE Clinton St), from 8am-4pm.
On offer here are dark roast drip coffees, fun mimosas, loose leaf tea, and only one food dish you can order: a flight of mini-donuts. You will get both savory and sweet bites, and I was very impressed by how each mini donut was a strong statement of flavors and beautifully presented like this is their regular restaurant, not that they are just taking over for part of a day.
Don’t be intimidated by the dark roast coffees – they had a great variety of sweeteners including local honey of course, but also find salted caramel, local honey, agave syrup, corainder dulce de leche, chocolate rum syrup, and nutella! Make any of these Irish coffees with an upgrade of Jameson and Baileys.
It is counter service where when you enter, you first order and pay before taking a seat with a number and wait for your drinks and donuts to be delivered. It wasn’t completely clear whether you were supposed to bus yourself or not – many didn’t – which resulted in a few times guests coming in and not sure where to sit since some tables still had dishes. Since they really only had a staff of literally a couple people with 1 in the kitchen and 1 manning the counter, I recommend putting them away yourself to be courteous to other donut lovers.
The donuts are made fresh, which means there may be a little wait before the dish arrives – but since the drinks come to you pretty quickly, you can let your coffee or tea cool off… or maybe get in a mimosa or two in. I had already had coffee earlier so didn’t partake in coffee this trip, but definitely would on a future visit. I tried two mimosas: the first was a Strawberry Sorbet Float mimosa with elderflower and yuzu which was super refreshing, and I can see this being very popular this summer. My advice, first try the mimosa without mixing the sorbet in, and try each part seapartely, and then stir it up!
The next mimosa I tried was a Young Coconut Watermelon mimosa with cucumber and a lime zest sugar rim. This was wonderful too, I would recommend this for those who want something lighter rather then on the citrus or fruit side. I practically felt this was a healthy mimosa haha.
And now time for the closeups of the donut flight this time – I expect the flights will vary a lot depending on the week, and so keep in mind this is just to give you an idea of what Outer Darkness Donuts is capable of.
This flight from their first popup last Sunday included
- poppy seed beignet with key lime curd, vanilla bean sugar bruleed kiwi and a lil blueberry
- bombalone breakfast sammy with melty cheddar scramble, black garlic aioli and mama’s lil peppers
- strawberry glazed graham cracker bar with cream cheese custard, raspberries and prosecco drizzle
- smoky bacon benedict funnel cake with truffle hollandaise, avocado and chives
- saigon cinnamon churro-nut with bittersweet ganache and milk chocolate caramel semifreddo
I am usually not big into donuts – I never buy large ones, and only get donut holes or maybe might eat half a donut if a box shows up at the office. I prefer savory over sweet, and often I find sweet dishes too sweet. Not the case here with the Outer Darkness Donuts- because everything is mini, nothing got too overwhelming in terms of sugar, and they were all balanced with other elements for each mini donut bite.
And, I loved the bombalone breakfast sammy and the smoky bacon benedit funnel cake as savory options, I would eat multiple of both of those!
I don’t think I could pick between the two which I loved best. Of all the sweet ones, I enjoyed the churro the most, but honestly all were great donuts that took your regular donut experience to the next level.
That said, don’t think you are going to share the flight- you will want to each order your own donut flight plate.
I totally would go back again today (2nd week in a row) if I didn’t already have another brunch obligation! But next Sunday opening – I’ll be back! See them only on Sundays popping up at Jacqueline from 8am-4pm.
Which of these donut bites would be your top pick?
