I spent Christmas in Los Angeles with my siblings and niece and nephew, and one way we treated ourselves was with KinKan Bento Boxes they offered for the holiday. This half-Japanese, half-Thai restaurant is a favorite of my sister who raves about the omakase there and I hope to return on a trip to dine at the counter. Until then though, we enjoyed the KinKan holiday bento boxes as one of the most beautiful takeout experiences I have ever had. Make sure you follow KinKan on Instagram to be in the know when special boxes are available!
We enjoyed the Unagi Lover ($15) and the Stairway to Chirashi Heaven Bento ($300) that comfortably fed 5 of us. I have a reel of the unboxing on Instagram, but for still photos of the details, check out below
Here’s a closer look at the Unagi Lover, which includes Whole unagi from japan, tamagoyaki (shrimp), ikura and sushi rice, for $15. The box is perfect for 1-2 people if eaten on its own, and the presentation is gorgeous.
And then for a stunner, check out the Stairway to Chrirashi Heaven Bento, 3 boxes of sashimi that included uni, ikura, tamagoyaki, A5 Waygu Beef, crab, and sheets of seaweed to make our own handrolls. Here’s a close up look of each of the 3 layers. The exquisite detail of how everything is arranged made us almost not want to disturb the art.
What a way to celebrate a special occasion like Christmas or whatever excuse you would like! I can’t wait to return to KinKan and dine (they offer a la carte or multi-course chef tasting menus) in person, but until then I will reminisce on the KinKan bento box experience like these are postcards from one of the most delicious meals of my life. Cheers!
