Summer Pop Ups in Portland 2017

Recently, I was given the opportunity to update the Eater article on pop ups, “The Hottest Portland Pop-Ups Right Now, Summer 2017”. It is not an exhaustive list of all the pop ups in Portland, though I think you know about a great majority of them if you reference that article and also look at the website Feastly (which I also wrote about for Eater) which also is a platform for local and visiting from other Feastly cities chefs to set up pop up events.

To make the list manageable, this time I tried to divide it into more subgroups based on type of cuisine in the world highlighted – and I was asked to keep it to a list of 21. So how did I curate it? And what stuff did I wish I could have included but couldn’t for the Eater PDX article – but can totally mention and loop you in on my blog since I control the space here? What else do I want you to know about Summer Pop Up Series Dining in Portland opportunities?

Brunch at Tusk and Upcoming Summer Party

Tusk in Portland took over the old Levant space on SE 24th and Burnside, transforming it into a light filled bright space with a sweet touch but continuing to offer Middle Eastern food and making use of the inherited open wood-burning hearth. Brunch at Tusk is only 10 AM – 2PM on Saturday and Sunday, otherwise they are open for dinner daily.

It’s quite a contrast seeing almost kitty corner across the street the line of people waiting for the heavier Southern brunch and fried chicken and biscuits versus here, the lighter Middle Eastern brunch plates, many which are vegetarian, can be made vegan, and feel healthier. Extensive studies have shown that Mediterranean eating patterns – of which Middle Eastern food share some commonality with its use of chickpeas, lentils, vegetables, olive oil, etc. –  are directly correlated with good health including the reduction of that LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) bad cholesterol,  risk of Alzheimer’s by approximately 40 percent, and the development of Parkinson’s Disease. So let’s bring on the hummus and pita, shall we!

Bright interior full of light welcomes you and keeps you feeling cheerful during your meal.

Recap of Tastes of Spain, La Ruta PDX 2017

The past 4 days were La Ruta PDX: A Gastronomic Festival celebrating the culinary culture of Spain. It included chefs from Spain and chefs from Portland collaborating together, as well as industry and trade focused events for Spanish and Portland purveyers to share their craft. The 4 days included a film premiere, some private seated dinners, seminars on sidra, sherry, and wine, and the final event was a food festival featuring bites from 19 local and Spanish chefs and artisans and 75-90 (I lost count) beverage tastings from winemakers, brewers, and sidra makers of Spain and Oregon. Here is my photo recap of Tastes of Spain, La Ruta PDX 2017.

I also have a few short videos I had taken for my Stories which are embedded here, though because they were for Stories they will be vertical videos, sorry!

Yard House Portland

I am a proponent of visiting local taprooms and breweries and drinking local beers. This philosophy extends both to when I’m in my home city, or when I’m traveling for pleasure or work. But, I am also a big fan of The Yard House – and I have been for many years. It is a national chain – I’ll disclose that upfront, and owned by Darden Restaurants (Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze) – restaurants you may recognize from suburban retail and tourist areas. However, there is still a place for it, even for a craft beer lover. Here is a look at why and what you can expect from Yard House and Yard House Portland.
Some of the taps (but not all of them!) at Yard House. This is likely the most taps you will ever see in one place - an average of 130 at each location. Yard House Portland offers 130 taps with a keg room holding over 5000 gallons of beer

The Yard House was founded more then 20 years ago in 1996 in Southern California, and since then the national chain has expanded to more than 66 restaurants and 23 states. Before I moved to Portland, Yard House was a major gateway for me to try beers besides the buckets of Bud and Corona of my college years, and for that I am still grateful. Plus, I know that for many just dipping their toes into craft beer, Yard House still serves that purpose of being an introduction to what is available in beer flavors, and that is something craft beer aficionados should give Yard House credit for, it’s nothing to sniff at.
Yard House Portland offers 130 taps with a keg room holding over 5000 gallons of beer. You can order beer in multiple sizes, including putting together your own sampler tray

There are 5 big things you can expect from every The Yard House experience, and which you’ll see some examples of from our local Yard House, Yard House Portland located on the first floor of Pioneer Place Mall (entrance is on on SW 5th and Taylor, a few yards away from the street level shiny Apple Store).

Recipe for Lentils with Roasted Tomatoes and Horseradish

I’ve shared my thoughts on the Anna Jones cookbook A Modern Way To Cook previously, as well my favorite recipe from the book for homemade crackers. This cookbook brings together more then 150 vegetarian recipes in unique flavor combinations, and one that had caught my eye and that I was saving for summer tomato season was one for Lentils with Roasted Tomatoes and Horseradish.

Lentils are super affordable and healthy, full of nutritional benefits such as high dietary fiber, lean protein, iron, folates, vitamin B6, manganese, thiamin, selenium ,and more. This makes them great for heart health, helps fight fatigue, can help with weight control since it helps you feel full, the fiber is good for digestion, and the selenium in lentils (not found in many foods) can improves immune response to infection by stimulating the production of disease-killing T-cells and helps detoxify some cancer-causing compounds in the body.
Recipe for Lentils - healthy for you and delicious

This dish is also, importantly, delicious. It is tasty with the creaminess but healthy comfort of the lentils, the cold contrasting shock of the horseradish sauce, the burst of the roasted grape tomatoes, and the crunchiness of the breadcrumbs. The only expensive ingredient is the horseradish sauce – the recipe calls for cottage cheese, but you can use silken tofu, vegan mayo, or vegan cream cheese too.
