Artigiano – Yukon Gold Gnocchi in Gorgonzola-Cream Sauce

Artigiano– fine dining quality Italian food from a food cart.  It’s amazing that they make their fresh homemade pasta all in a cart, and they also source local ingredients to complete the dish. Seriously, this is tablecloth restaurant quality stuff, the kind of food that I would expect with candles and sparkly chandeliers… but instead you get to enjoy it al fresco on the streets of SE Division.

Here is a photo of their meltingly delicious gnocchi, one of their handmade pasta dishes from their menu. This is the Yukon Gold Gnocchi in Gorgonzola-Cream Sauce with Filberts hazelnuts, and along with some arugula, parmigiano reggiano, and ground pepper with a touch of vinaigrette to help balance the richness… and a nice piece of bread to wipe up the sauce afterwards. I don’t know where the gnocchi kept disappearing so quickly- it was in my mouth and then gone like waking up from a good dream and trying to remember it quickly before it fades- and I kept taking spoonfuls and then I had no more, sad. 🙁

Recently the recipe for this dish for this dish was shared in Mix Magazine as part of an article on Comfort Food, Italian Style: Five Portland chefs share recipes. As Artigiano owner is quoted as saying the article regarding this dish…

“There’s nothing more comforting than the melt-in-your-mouth texture of perfectly made potato gnocchi,” says proprietor Rachael Grossman.

I agree- I barely noticed the gloomy cloudy skies of a rainy spring day as I sat beneath the little tent next to their cart to embrace the comfort from this dish.

Don’t let a rainy blustery day stop you from getting your pasta: you can call in take-out orders, and they have parking available in the Larry’s Lighting Repair Lot on 33rd & Division after 5pm for your quick pick up and go!

This food cart, Sideshow Eatery, started out with mainly side dishes 6 weeks ago, but recently added sandwiches, and a photo from Food Cart Portland of their pork belly sandwich successfully tempted me to try it for lunch after a dentist visit downtown. They are open until 11-6pm so if you hurry you could grab this after work as well- these hours are good M-Sat, they are open 11-4 on Sun so their sign says (so they are open on the weekends!). Besides the pork belly sandwich, they also offer a Caprice vegetarian sandwich of mozzarella, heirloom tomatoes and basil mayo, and a PBJ sandiwch which uses peach jam and homemade peanut butter.

Pork belly sandwich is a quickly seared pork belly nestled atop arugula for a bit of bite, sriracha mayo (spicy and creamy, but more towards the kick end of the spectrum), and pickled red plums for a bit of sourness, all in a toasted Pearl Bakery baguette.

Poutine was the side I chose, though you can also get regular pommes frites (twice fried yukon gold potatoes… yes, fries.) and then enjoy them with your choice of handcrafted sauces varying from curry ketchup to garlic mayo and sriracha mayo or Japanese mayo. My poutine was plain, but you can also add extra cheese and gravy, chopped onion, or bacon. If your arteries are still flowing, consider that Sideshow also offers fluffy sugar coated beignets, those New Orleans style powdered square doughnut covered in powdered sugar, and you can even order chicory coffee to go with.

Spencer! Brought to you by PB&J

I stopped at the PB&Js Grilled cart with Spencer in mind as something to enjoy as I continued running my errands yesterday. I was thrown off my game slightly because of the debut of a new special, a shiny sign with photo of a luxe bottle of bourbon and the red wax all sexy while alongside, the words read “Makers Mark Hair of the Dog”. Wait, does that bold print say Makers Mark soaked french challah toast? Does that say and with apple wood smoked bacon? And their peanut butter and blueberry jam and maple syrup!??? I had seen on their FB that they were concocting something, but missed what the result was and that it would debut that day! Well…

No. No. Stay strong. I stuck with Spencer: Campagnola bread, Walnut butter, Caramelized onion, Capicola, Brie, Pear Jam. That is what my intention was when I stopped by, let’s not get distracted. I told myself I would eat just half of that warm sammie, and then run into the stores I needed and finish the rest later. Yeah, it didn’t make it. I couldn’t stop. People were jealous as I took the photo below too- and who wouldn’t be, just look at it!

I was disappointed to miss their event with Upright Brewing that they did a couple months back when I was out of the country traveling for work, so am anxiously anticipating their grand opening of their brick and mortar in the future (still in the works – the overhead of opening a real place is a lot to try to do at the same time as running your everyday operations, new partner gigs they do, exploring new special combinatons to feature, and they will be Eat Mobile – the food cart/foodie festival that was their initial big debut just 2 years ago!). Each of their sandwiches are yes, versions of peanut butter and some sort of fruit jam sandwich, but that’s like saying french fries are just a version of potato…

I can’t wait to try more from their brilliant minds of flavor combinations once they have access to a bigger space for both storage and execution of more of their ideas. It’s hard to believe the huge menu they have from their little grill that varies from sandwiches with 4 different kind of breads, a dozen different kind of jams, a few different nut butters, and other toppings besides ranging from half a dozen of options for cheeses to sweets like chocolate or caramel or coconut fillings to the savory like the bacon or for the Spencer, the big pieces of Capicola- which ultimately what edged the Spencer to the top of my to do list. Can you imagine the possibilities with a real kitchen?

A Plate Lunch: 808 Grinds Food Cart

I am in charge of researching a possible multi-island vacation to Hawaii, and to set me in the right mood, besides watching the new Hawaii 5-O on my DVR, I recently stopped at the food cart downtown called 808 Grinds. I’ve always heard good things about this food cart even though this was only my first visit, and I was lucky to get there very early as when I passed by after my lunch, there was quite a line of people waiting.

I’ve been eyeing this cart for a while and was not disappointed. It’s a lot of food in a plate lunch: what you see is the Combo plate with Kalua Pig and Fried Chicken. If you want a  more reasonable amount, get one of the single food orders. But I figure hey, for a few dollars more I can have a plate lunch for both lunch and dinner, so let’s go!

Besides their generous portions, I appreciated their fast service with the freshly fried chicken and the fact that when they call your name because your order is up, he opened it up so I can admire it… and in this case the prep guy suddenly said “wait! Green onion!” and so they pulled it back to make sure the combo came out perfect in every detail. I was tempted on my visit as I saw they were offering Korean Fried Chicken… that will just have to be a future visit.

Gaufre Gourmet Food Cart

Before our trip to Fred Meyer on a quest for tire chains (that we would not be using but had to carry just in case) to go to Trillium Lake, we headed out for breakfast/lunch. My sister voted between a stop at a brick and morter for crepes or a cart for waffles, and she went with waffles and her first Portland food cart. When we arrived, my choice of Flavourspot was not open for whatever reason – it’s a risk sometimes with food carts, and especially in the winter, and especially as this past weekend was just ending a very cold spell that froze many cart water tanks (though I didn’t see anything on FB or Twitter, oh well).

Backup plan! So we went a few blocks down to F’s recommendation of Gaufre Gourmet. Gaufre does a slightly more traditional waffle menu from their relatively new cart- they top mini waffles  with sweet or/and savory, rather then making a dutch taco (where the waffle is the “taco”). You can order whole servings or halves of any of their waffle menu offerings.

Savory offerings. One was a special for the day/week/season?, a “street taco waffle” with seasonal shredded chicken with pico de gallo, salsa verde, sour cream and guacamole on a cornbread jalapeno waffle. I didn’t get to try this one, but other F seemed to like it, and it sure looked good.

The other savory offering we ordered was my half order of an ABC waffle: arugula, bacon, camembert cheese, and fig jam. They sure were generous with the arugula, and although I liked the combination of the acid from the dressed arugula with the savory salt of the bacon and soft lightly sweet of the fig, I wish that the cheese had been more creamy melted on the waffle. You can see sorta under all the arugula and bacon that the camembert got warmed enough to sweat but not get oozy to release its butteryness.

Sweet offerings. The Milk and Honey: goat cheese mousse, pistachios, and balsamic caramel sauce, was lightly sweet, but became overwhelming after getting halfway through it. The goat cheese mousse was delicious though- I would recomend only getting a half waffle on this instead a whole. The same advice can be applied to the the Nutty Pearfessor (ok, cute name) with nutella, pears, caramel sauce and candied pecans, unless you really love nutella.

I thought the combination of both sweet and savory can be best found in the Maple Bacon waffle. I think this is better then Voodoo’s maple bacon bar, without having to wait in line and isn’t as sickly sweet as the doughnut, and the ratio of bacon to sweet is more in line to distribute the salty with the super sweet. Pictured below is a half order. I actually saved this and heated it up later so that the maple frosting melted off a bit (there was a bit too much frosting) but the thick crispy bacon definitely still held up in crispness a few days later!

This kept us pretty full up to dinnertime- and Gaufre’s location on Burnside and 4th makes for easy parking on 4th when you want to quickly stop and grab some deliciousness from a cart and go. Gaufre will take credit cards and also offers warm beverages on their menu varying from coffee to hot chocolate to cider too, they have some picnic benches around the carts… basically everything you need to get your morning (or erhm late morning) started. You will need to use their plastic silverware to eat any of their waffles- they are messy, and even then you may need to lick your sticky fingers so if you can bring a wet napkin for each diner that would be ideal. Their location, no surprise, is also open at late night so you can walk only a block or two from the clubs in the vicinity for a wee hour waffle bite. Why get fast food or wait in line for Saturday brunch at a restaurant when you can have food like this at a food cart?

Everything was a bit too sweet for my taste, so maybe next time I visit (I have a Groupon for them that I had not been carrying since I switched purses to snowshoe), I might ask them to dial back on the sweetness and that could make it work for my palatte, which has always leaned more towards savory than sweet. Parker’s Waffles is still my favorite waffle cart, but they put entire scrambles and meats liked pulled pork in between their waffles, which they just brush with maple butter or sweet cream butter, so it’s not a fair comparison. Waffle Window would be more fair competitorto Gaufre- but I haven’t had them either so can’t judge yet. Since Gaufre is new, it has the advantage right now of no huge line… yet- but given the devoted followers of the other 3 waffle carts I have named, it may be just a matter of time.
