Best PDX Breakfast Sandwich: Portland Penny Diner

For some reason this summer I have been really into breakfast sandwiches, and I thought I would share some of those sandwiches over the next few weeks that I consider the best in Portland. Here’s my first Best in PDX breakfast sandwich highlight.

This is one of the most frequent breakfast sandwiches I crave is from Portland Penny Diner downtown. This sandwich stands out because of the unique trait of being on a fresh Parker House Roll. They have three versions of this sandwich at breakfast (served until 7 – 11 AM) that includes a mortadella version with egg, sauerkraut, and coffee mayo (PDXWT, which I’ve shared before), a meatless Hipster one with tomato, hazelnut romesco, and egg, or this one…

The New Yorker on a fresh Parker House roll with house sausage, bacon, egg, cheese. This one is available at breakfast and also on their mid-day menu unlike the other two breakfast sandwiches.

You can eat this sandwich here in this modern diner or get it to go. Every time I’ve had one of these damn things I always eat it in like 5 minutes because I just can’t stop, they are always so good. I love all three versions of the 3 Parker House roll breakfast sandwiches, but I most often get the New Yorker because of the longer availability during the day.

I’m still waiting for them to come to their senses and also offer a Parker House roll sandwich in the evening because I would totally grab one to go and take it down to Bailey’s Taproom if it was available. Hell, if I could even just get a try of these rolls, I’d do it… Instead, I pop over to Imperial which has the Parker House rolls on their regular menu for $1 a piece and get one at the bar, as I’ve already shared here as Imperial is one of my favorite bite and a drink highlights in Portland.

What are your thoughts on Parker House roll breakfast sandwiches? Have you had one of these from Portland Penny Diner before? Where is your favorite PDX breakfast sandwich from?

A look at a Plate and Pitchfork Dinner

Every summer, Plate and Pitchfork has been creating farm to table dinner events to help people appreciate and celebrate the journey and connection of the hard work of farmers to the incredible local food that can nourish us in nutrition and spirit. Each Plate and Pitchfork dinner takes advantage of highlighting the freshest seasonal ingredients from local farms picked at the height of flavor, prepared fantastically thanks to the expertise of a variety of partnering local chefs, and then guests dine al fresco at actual farms after a farm tour.

I attended my first Plate & Pitchfork dinner recently, which took place at Diggin’ Roots Farm in Molalla, Oregon. At this particular dinner on August 13 the chef trio of Chef Maya Lovelace from Mae, Chef Tommy Habetz of Pizza Jerk & Bunk Sandwiches, and Chef Mika Paredes of Girls Club PDX, and wines from Brooks. Here’s a look at some of the experience after we checked in…

Lincoln Restaurant Happy Hour

Today let’s look at Lincoln Restaurant – lots of great seating if you’re dining alone by the bar at the counter, intimate two-tops for a date, and larger tops for meeting up with friends or bringing your family or out of town guests, because this is a place that is perfect for all of those scenarios. It’s the perfect blend of being great to dress up for a special occasion and celebrate or also hang out and also be the casual neighborhood restaurant. Today I’m highlighting the Lincoln Restaurant happy hour menu which has refreshing takes on classic happy hour choices as well as some more unique and original  menu choices too.

Oil cured olives and rosebuds with fennel pollen and orange; Grilled dates and marcona almonds with lime and sea salt; I love how these small classic choices of olives or dates are still given a special twist by Lincoln.

Hand cut fries with garlic, rosemary, pecorino-romano; Cornmeal Onion Rings with pimenton aioli; Those onion rings are very addictive. Again, Lincoln adds a little extra something to even just an order of fries or onion rings.

Any kind of Hummus that Lincoln makes is awesome, and you can see they are going beyond just the everyday garbanzo beans. They’ve had a well loved carrot hummus, and here is a version that is Asparagus Hummus with labneh, egg and here salmon and accompanied with fresh flatbread

Similarly, ANY pasta by Lincoln is also off the hook. I had to share this Happy Hour item of Spaccatelli with smoked tallow, speck, sherry but I could have eaten the whole plate by myself easily.

Baked Eggs with cream, olives, herbed breadcrumbs, so simple but sooooo good.

Of course they offer a juicy cheeseburger on their happy hour menu, but there’s another more exciting sandwich option I think. I love this English Muffin Fontina in Carroza, egg, sopresseta

Now not all of these desserts below are on the happy hour menu, but go ahead and splurge on dessert – one dessert the Brutta Ma Buoni, is on the happy hour menu though.

Burrasca Gnudi

Burrasca used to be a Tuscan food cart until in 2015 it closed the cart after a successful Kickstarter and emerged as a brick and mortar at 2032 SE Clinton Street. Since then, this family owned, humble, little warm homey neighbohood restaurant has expanded their Florentine food offerings from the pasta to include some unusual authentic appetizers you normally don’t see and some hearty mains. When there are slightly cooler summer days like what we have been having, I think of them – and you should too. Or honestly, if you’re thinking of gnocchi – get yourself here!

For me, my first love remains the same: the Burrasca Gnudi, Spinach and ricotta gnocchi with butter and bits of crispy sage.

The service here can be a little slow at times, but I don’t feel like you go to a neighborhood family place to rush through a meal. I eat my gnudi, thinking about ordering a second plate of gnudi for myself but resist while sipping on an Italian wine in their back patio.

I use their crescentine, a puffy, fried breadstick to soak up all the rest of the butter and pick up the crispy sage, and then go across the street to Fifty Licks for dessert (sorry Burrasca). The plates here are on the small side, not the oversized portions you usually see at pasta restaurants, but they are all quality.

Ya Hala Brunch

The first time I realized Ya Hala had a brunch was when it was listed as March of 2015 when they initially launched it and were recommended by Portland Monthly (Three Reasons To Try Ya Hala’s New Lebanese Brunch) and the Oregonian (Ya Hala’s brunch goes beyond bacon and eggs: Cheap eats). And then this was reinforced when shortly after I tried Ya Hala’s entry at the Portland Monthly Country Brunch last year of a Breakfast Canape with grilled potato, tomato marmalade, egg relish, and smoked lamb bacon was assembled on the spot by Chef Mirna Attar and team. It was one of the best bites of that brunch event, and so I knew I had to go.

Ya Hala Lebanese Restaurant in Portland

Since then, I’ve been a few times. It’s located in Montavilla, at SE 80th and Stark, literally right across the street from famous brunch / fried chicken restaurant The Country Cat. Unlike The Country Cat though, each time I’ve been there has never been a line, and so I think Ya Hala is still one of the best kept brunch secrets in Portland.

Here’s a look at some of the dishes I’ve tried – they are huge, meant for sharing!

A thick hit of Turkish Coffee is a classic start to the day

Meanwhile, I like to opt for the Flight of Mimosas, which includes sparkling white and muddled cucumber with mango, guava, or pomegranate juice. These are wonderful, every time.

One of my favorite dishes to share is the Brunch dish of Fried Haloumi and Rainbow Carrots served with a Pomegranate Demiglace, Arugula and two Fried Eggs. It had me at the words Fried Haloumi. And, the additional Rainbow Carrots with the sweet Pomegranate Demiglace and the slightly peppery arugula make it seem healthy enough to justify eating fried cheese as part of brunch.

There’s also the Lebanese take on the classic, a Ya Hala Lebanese Brunch big plate of Lebanese Country Breakfast with house-smoked lamb bacon, house soujouk, fried egg, potato-mint hash. All the good breakfast meats of bacon and soujouk (the sausage) are here to share with your brunch party. I think I preferred the soujak to the lamb bacon.

The huge earthen bowl of Houmous Balila with garlic spiced garbanzos, classic homous, vegetarian ghee and pine nuts is F’s favorite. When you sit down, you are given a complimentary HUGE freshly baked and grilled pita to share, still warm, so this is a great accompaniment for the pita.
Ya Hala Lebanese Brunch plate of houmous balila with garlic spiced garbanzos, classic homous, vegetarian ghee and pine nuts

If you order the fried chicken dish, remind yourself that this is not going to be your crispy Southern fried American chicken. It’s Moroccan Fried Chicken, so it will be in a tangy sticky sauce that includes flavors of with onion and garlic with cinnamon and cardamom, so don’t expect crispy breaded chicken. The Moroccan Fried Chicken is served with couscous gratin and a fried egg.
Ya Hala Lebanese Brunch plate of Moroccan Fried Chicken served with couscous gratin and a fried egg Ya Hala Lebanese Brunch plate of Moroccan Fried Chicken served with couscous gratin and a fried egg

Personally, I think the star of this platter is actually the creamy cheesy but fun texturally Couscous Gratin. Having this dish eventually inspired me to make a Israeli cheese couscous which I’ve shared before. They are a great mash up of the luxury of a risotto and a mac and cheese, combining their powers!
Ya Hala Lebanese Brunch plate of Moroccan Fried Chicken served with couscous gratin and a fried egg

You can order this for dessert or just as a sweet starter, but the small brunch plate of Kanefe Bejeben, a sweet cheese pie served with a sesame pita and rose water syrup is definitely unique to Ya Hala by offering this Lebanese dessert. It’s gooey and yet feels like a perfect combo of rich and light. This is especially fine paired with that Turkish Cofee.

To go, consider taking a chocolate halva croissant or za’atar croissant (I went for the latter) for later!
