Eats in Oahu

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and is gearing up to celebrate the new year and end of this decade – here comes 2020! As I am reflecting on this past year, I am grateful that I had an opportunity to do all the travel (links to my index of travel posts) – from Singapore to Penang to Hawaii, New Orleans, and several visits to California. My trip to Hawaii was to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family, and resulted in many happy memories as well as onolicious eats in Oahu. Here are a few highlights I would recommend if you are in Waikiki, all are family friendly.

Our stay at the multi-bedroom, equipped with kitchen Aston Waikiki Beach Tower was an incredible location as it was right across from Waikiki Beach, with great views. It was very family friendly with a king bed, two single beds, a pull out couch bed, and full size kitchen. They even have free beach toys for the kids! The location could not be beat, as it right on the very walkable and bustling Kalakaua Street. The location is right across the street literally from the especially children friendly Kuhio Beach section of Waikiki Beach. This part is protected by a sea wall for calmer waters, which is perfect for little ones like my 3 year old niece and my 4 month old nephew.

It also was only blocks away from Musubi Cafe Iyasume, where we procured multiple musubi on different days for breakfast, for a snack, to eat on the plane back… They make the musubi to order, so the combination of fresh rice and teriyaki Spam is still soft and warm when you receive it. There also are a few bento boxes available too, and lots of different flavors of Spam.

Don’t be intimidated by the line – it moves quickly. At the location on Prince Edward/Kuhio and Uluiniu Streets, you will find the most variety to select from – almost 2 dozen starring Spam, and more traditional onigiri rice balls too. My favorite that I kept returning to was a combo of Teriyaki Spam Musubi with Avocado and Egg and Bacon, although we also enjoyed a version with Unagi/Eel. Most people take theirs to go, although there is a small seating section in the back.

A visit to Oahu also isn’t complete unless you try out the fried to order malasadas. Malasadas are essentially a round Portuguese donut without the hole in the middle and dusted with sugar and possibly filled with a cream that can range in flavor from macadmia nut to haupia/coconut, guava, or more.

They look big but are light and fluffy, making it a little too easy to put down two even before you drive away. Leonard’s Bakery is the famous original malasada bakery in Oahu, frying them up since 1953. There is a small parking lot in front of the storefront, but you can also find some street parking, and call ahead orders of two dozen or more. We reheated some malasadas for breakfast the next day.

808 Grinds Loco Moco

Have you heard of plate lunches from Hawaii? A bit of a gut bomb, but incredibly popular in the Aloha Islands. 808 Grinds features Hawaiian cuisine – specifically plate lunches – found at their Downtown Food Cart at the corner of SW 9th and Washington (open mainly for lunch, Monday – Friday, 11AM to 3PM), their Gigantic Brewery Food cart at 5226 SE 26th Avenue (open Monday – Saturday, 11AM to 9PM) and also at their Cafe location at 10100 SW Park Way (Monday – Saturday, 10:30AM to 8:30PM).

When the days are cold and a bit dreary, I sometimes crave these plate lunches because they are super comforting and remind me of sunshine and rainbow days of vacations past in Hawaii. This post is also an extra nod to the ladies at my dinner table this past Wednesday who brought this up!

For a plate lunch, you choose a protein and then the “plate” (more like this super heavy container because they are quite generous…) comes also with a scoop each of rice and mac salad for the sides. This is the Loco Moco, a handmade, all-beef patty grilled, topped with a fried egg, and smothered in gravy. This is my usual order –  for me its enough for lunch and dinner, despite the lunch in its name (after all I haven’t been burning thousands of calories surfing all morning unlike). I would imagine in this current season this would be a great way to end a day on the white snowy powder in the mountains.

If you are indecisive, they have a few combos where you can choose two proteins to try – such as here below the Shoyu Chicken (chicken slow-cooked for hours in a garlic-ginger-soy marinade) with the Kahlua Pork (Hawaiian-Style pulled pork served naked) in the Da Combo. The third chicken protein you can choose is the fried chicken (boneless, skinless thigh pieces marinated, battered and fried). So, get two chickens (Chicken Combo), or one of the chickens with the pork (Da Combo or 808 Combo). Or order the Trifecta and get all three – the two chickens and the pork.

A Plate Lunch: 808 Grinds Food Cart

I am in charge of researching a possible multi-island vacation to Hawaii, and to set me in the right mood, besides watching the new Hawaii 5-O on my DVR, I recently stopped at the food cart downtown called 808 Grinds. I’ve always heard good things about this food cart even though this was only my first visit, and I was lucky to get there very early as when I passed by after my lunch, there was quite a line of people waiting.

I’ve been eyeing this cart for a while and was not disappointed. It’s a lot of food in a plate lunch: what you see is the Combo plate with Kalua Pig and Fried Chicken. If you want a  more reasonable amount, get one of the single food orders. But I figure hey, for a few dollars more I can have a plate lunch for both lunch and dinner, so let’s go!

Besides their generous portions, I appreciated their fast service with the freshly fried chicken and the fact that when they call your name because your order is up, he opened it up so I can admire it… and in this case the prep guy suddenly said “wait! Green onion!” and so they pulled it back to make sure the combo came out perfect in every detail. I was tempted on my visit as I saw they were offering Korean Fried Chicken… that will just have to be a future visit.

So onolicious!
