Eat for a Cause August 29 and Help Women!

On Saturday, August 29, there are two opportunities where you can Eat For a Cause and help women at the same time! Don’t let the weather predictions for some rain and wind deter you.

Ruby Jewel Hawthorne, benefiting Raphael House

First, there is the Grand Opening of the new location of Ruby Jewel Ice Cream at SE Hawthorne, in the Mount Tabor neighborhood. The 4707 SE Hawthorne location is right between Por Que No and Apizza Scholls, both famous restaurants that will be open for lunch (as well as dinner). So then come on over for dessert because as part of their Grand Opening, a percentage of the proceeds goes towards Raphael House, a Domestic Violence agency.

Founded in 1977, Raphael House of Portland is dedicated to fighting the causes and effects of domestic violence. They offer emergency shelter in a confidential location, a 24-hour in-house crisis line, transitional housing and advocacy programs, non-residential advocacy in partnership with the Portland Police Bureau, and also work to bring an end to violence through community outreach and education. Raphael House is the largest domestic violence shelter in Multnomah County. Annually, Raphael House provides 10,000 safe nights for women and children in their emergency shelter and support as many as 5,000 callers on their 24/7 crisis line.

Ruby Jewel Hawthorne will be open noon – 11 PM, so you have plenty of time during the day to make your way here. As part of the celebration, they will have live music by Mo Phillips from 2-4 PM and also a special Mt Tabor Volcano Sundae which you can see previewed by Drew Karney of KGW here and you can see posed here… The Mt Tabor Volcano Sundae is a 2 scoops of ice cream (your choice) with an upside down “volcano” cone, hardening chocolate sauce, double chocolate cookies, and fresh strawberry sauce and whipped cream.

Special flavors above and beyond their regular flavors include

Potential Ice Cream Sundae Combos

At a media preview, I also got to try some great sundae combinations if you are looking for some ideas. For instance a Chocolate Chip Squared Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce and Praline Pecans with Whipped Cream and an Oregon Strawberry Ice Cream topped with Housemade Marshmallow Fluff and Crisp Chunks (these are mini sample sundaes, the ones you get will be much bigger ;D ). I didn’t try this myself, but there is also for your consideration the combo of Hazelnut Latte ice cream with chocolate dip, whipped cream, and espresso caramel sauce

Dairy Free Ice Cream Floats

They also had two wonderful ice cocktails (aka the dairy free ice creams float): Reverend Nat’s Revival Cider Ice combined with Prosecco (YUM) and the Portland Soda Works Root Beer Ice with rum, root beer syrup and orange liquor (quite a bit stronger than prosecco).

EastBurn, benefiting Portland Women’s Crisis Line

Next, hop on over to Eastburn at 1800 East Burnside Street for their 2nd Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational! 9 establishments throw down at EastBurn to see who has the best grilled cheese.
Eastburn Grilled Cheese Invitational 2015

Participants include so far

  • Meat Cheese Bread
  • Bazi Bier Brasserie
  • Brunch Box
  • Big Ass Sandwiches
  • Gaufre Gourmet
  • Zeek’s Cheese Grill
  • The Blue Plate
  • Gil’s Speakeasy

It’s 5-11 PM and all ages. A $20 ticket gets you a scorecard, where you will then go to each competitor’s hole (apparently it’s set up like a golf course, thus the golf club with a grilled cheese in the poster) to try each grilled cheese. Then, you rate their grilled cheese based on taste, originality, presentation and best overall.

All proceeds go to the Portland Women’s Crisis Line. The Portland Women’s Crisis Line (PWCL) was one of the first five sexual violence crisis lines in the United States. PWCL provides services to the Tri-County area made up of Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties, and its toll-free number can be called from anywhere in the state. PWCL provides social services such as crisis intervention, in person response for survivors of sexual violence, emergency housing resources, danger to safety transportation assistance, safety planning, advocacy and support, and agency and community support groups, as well as being a social change organize to not only empower those who experience violence, but also to end the oppression and violence which causes them to seek out our services.

If you can’t make the invitational, at least stop by during the month of August (I know, only a few days left) because every $5 Grilled Cheese at Eastburn this month also has the proceeds go towards PWCL.

One of my favorite things about Eastburn are their swing seats, which you can find by the front windows when you first walk in and also in their back patio!

I hope you can join me in eating for a cause in supporting both of these very important and worthy non profits and help them continue to make a difference every day.

Disclosure: I was invited to a media event for Ruby Jewel Hawthorne’s Grand Opening to preview the September flavors and menu offerings, but I was not asked to write this post, and I threw in EastBurn as well because I think both are amazing events that you might consider for Saturday. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.

Fifty Licks Sorbet Cocktails and more!

Disclosure: I attended an event where tasting samples of these ice creams, sorbets, and cocktails was complimentary, but I will always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences I may be given. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.

I’m trying to remember how long I have been loving Fifty Licks ice cream. I think it might have been when they first opened, since I have a photo in 2010 of their Red Bull Cola Ice Cream.  In other photos I wrote in the captions that the Stumptown Coffee and Tahitian Vanilla were excellent, and was particularly loving the bacon bit parts of their Maple Bacon.

I called it then “wonderful shake-ups to normal ice cream.” Even though coffee and vanilla sound plain, they were bursting with flavor, and you could notice and appreciate the high quality ingredients. I like how the French custard style makes their product so creamy and soft.

Since then, I’ve visited their adorable, nostalgic light blue truck at the Good Foods Here food cart pod at SE Belmont and 43rd  (at least until that food pod closes), as well as when I run across their other truck (locations vary). The last delicious flavor I remember is from a few months ago a Toasted Milk ice cream, and before that was Passionfruit Szechuan Peppercorn sorbet (tart with a kick!), so clearly they are still bringing it, combining classic with creative.

I also remember saying that Chad Draizin, owner, is the best dressed, most stylish ice cream man I have ever seen.

Recently (this past August), they opened up a brick and mortar location at 2021 SE Clinton at 21st, just down a door from St. Jack, and also easily walkable from SE Division or Powell if the other offerings on SE Clinton aren’t enough options.  This sounds like a PERFECT end of a dinner for me. They are just a cute, clean crisp little bright spot.

Actually, it’s even better than I thought. It turns out the Fifty Licks is more than just an Ice Cream Parlor. Besides offering  ice cream flavors and sorbets you can also get Fifty Licks sorbet cocktails and Cafe Cubano. So it can be your stop before and after dinner!

Chad has brought Cafe Cubano in case you want a little pick me up to warm you up from your walk. The little pot serves four, and it is extremely strong so the key is in beating the crap to cream that generous helping of sugar, as he demonstrated for us. Thanks for bringing this from Miami for us Chad.

They have twelve rotating flavors of scooped ice creams and sorbets. The flavors will continually be updated/rotated, based on what mad genius comes to fruition for the Fifty Licks imagination + execution testing! All you need to know is that Chad is a mad genius, and you cannot go wrong with any flavor you pick.

Ok, I guess I can elaborate. Chad is a perfectionist in terms of making sure any new flavor is the best it can be, often developing flavors for weeks and paying attention to details like how purely the original high quality ingredient comes through in the final ice cream/sorbet, how the texture feels, and even (and particularly for Chad) the aromatics … Even the pint packaging he thinks about the way it sounds and feels to close the lid. He cares about every detail of your entire experience.

And, even though he humbly shrugs that everything he knows is just stuff he picked up along the way, don’t be surprised if he is suddenly channeling a sweet young version of Alton Brown as he begins to explain how he can make caramel out of anything (such as for his Caramelized Apple flavor, he made the caramel directly out of apples! And is there a way to do that from sweet potatoes he wonders…) or talks about using the pressure cooker one second and food chemistry and reactions of ingredients at a molecular level a few seconds later.

It’s addicting to watch and listen to this combination of food purist (he wants flavors to be singular and appreciated, not muddled in complexity) and science nerd and creativity explain how his flavors are crafted. For instance, the Toasted Milk flavor came to him in a dream- he didn’t know how he was going to make it happen, but he knew what it would end up as, and so began his quest… And the result is a treasure, sounding strange but then after one taste you feel nostalgic and homey and comforted and loved like a young toddler with a milk bottle, but so much better.

He mentioned lots of intriguing ideas he has (I think there was at least 5 different flavor combinations just with chocolate!), but I don’t want to spoil it so you’ll just have to follow Fifty Licks on Facebook, Twitter handle @FiftyLicks, and feast with your eyes on their Instagram feed FiftyLicks.

Since I was with a group, we got little sampler tastings (obviously these sake cup portions are not the size you would get if you order), but I wanted to show some of the photos so you can see the detail even in these sample scoops. Don’t you just want to sip your spoon into that soft creamy ice cream?

Example ice cream flavors for instance might include (remember these will rotate based on seasonal ingredients/new ideas!):

  • Stumptown Coffee
  • Tahitian Vanilla
  • Toasted Milk
  • Jasmine Tea with Apricot
  • Caramelized Apple
  • Cherry Bourbon
  • Jasmine Rice with Fragrant Pandan
  • Raspberry
  • Blood Orange Screamscle
  • Maple with Bacon
  • Single Malt Scotch

Sorbet flavors for instance might include:

  • Coconut Lemon Saffron
  • Passionfruit with Sichuan Peppercorns
  • Grapefruit with Rosewater
  • Rhode Island Style Frozen Lemonade
  • Chocolate with Toasted Oat Milk

You can select a gluten-free waffle cone instead of a cup if you’d like, as well as select from toppings such as Ghost Pepper salt, bee pollen, sweet corn dust, potato chips, Ovaltine, who knows what they might have! For instance,  below, this one on the left is Jasmine Tea with Apricot ice cream with bee pollen topping, and the other is Passionfruit with Sichuan Peppercorns sorbet topped with Ghost Pepper Salt, tart and spicy!

Unique Alert: Fifty Licks Sorbet Cocktails

Meanwhile, for their sorbet cocktails, look at these awesome concoctions! This alone is worth making a stop at Fifty Licks, if the above isn’t enough to persuade you. Now, they do not have a liquor license  (since that would require them serving food, which is more than this little ice cream parlor can handle in their space), but the few cocktails they do offer are so exquisite and I’m not sure why you would want anything else. These are so sophisticated I don’t know why they aren’t currently on a Bon Appétit or Saveur cover, they are so beautiful. On the other hand, maybe by June of next year, they will be…

Only my good manners kept me from drinking one of these shared tastes by myself… and perhaps I may have finished the last leftovers of one of the Furacao and Velvet Shiso which offered a beguiling experience of flavors, and the tart refreshment of the Nordic Palmer is also delightful.

Fifty Licks winter hours now, so is open 4pm-10pm and 12-11p on Fri and Sat, and offers a Happy Hour on our sorbet cocktails every day, 4-6. You can also buy these adorable little pints to take home.

Feast Ice Cream! (Unofficial to Feast Portland)

Feast Portland is almost here! Feast is almost here (September 19-22, 2013)! Feast Feast Feast!

A few unofficial Feast ice cream events are currently happening in Portland that you can catch. I thought I would point these out particularly because even though it’s mid-September, it is 90 degrees out. Whaaaa!!??

1. Ruby Jewel Scoops: Best of the Northwest Ice Cream Contest

From September 9 through 17 from noon to 11 pm at the two Ruby Jewel Scoops locations (3713 N Mississippi St and 428 SW 12th Ave) you can join in to cast your ballot for your favorite Northwest Ice Cream inspired ice cream flavor. All of these ice cream flavors celebrate local Northwest ingredients. You can try the four contending flavors, which include

  • Garden Tomato with Basil (seriously, it tastes just like a farmers market fresh caprese salad)
  • Hazelnut with Honey Bar
  • Chevre with Spiced Peach Jam
  • Espresso with Housemade Chocolate Covered Almond Brittle

Feast Ice Cream selection, Ruby Jewel Scoops Best of the Northwest Ice Cream Contest

The ingredients in the ice cream celebrate and support other local artisans, such as nuts from Freddy Guy Hazelnuts, honey bar from Beans and Bees, the chevre from Portland Creamery, peaches from Baird Family Peaches, and espresso from Nossa Familia Coffee Roasters.

As if eating the ice cream isn’t enough incentive, participating voters will be entered to win a ticket to the Feast Grand Bounty Tasting (which I previously wrote about here, in case you want to check it out) and three pints of ice cream.

Ruby Jewel will be present at the Widmer Brothers Sandwich Invitational at Directors Park on Thu Sept 19 6-9pm (which I previously blogged about here). The tickets just sold out to the Sandwich Invitational yesterday on the 12th, but you still have a chance to try out what Ruby might be offering at this event, which was $95 a ticket. Visit one of their two locations now, plus win a possible ticket to the Grand Tasting! The winner will be randomly selected on September 18, so get in there, taste and vote!

2. Salt and Straw Guest Chef Collaboration Series #2

For the month of September, Salt and Straw is doing their Second Annual Guest Chef Series! They have five new limited edition ice creams made in collaboration with world-renowned chefs participating in Portland’s Feast Food Festival that are special just for this month. A portion of the proceeds from these flavors are donated to Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon.

Feast Ice Cream, Salt & Straw's September 2013 Guest Chef Collaboration Series with Loaded Baked Potato, a flavor collaboration that includes the flavors of Loaded Baked Potato, Sweet Corn, Waffle Cones & Caramel, Mint Leaves with Sea Urchin Meringues, Hawaiian PB&J, Coconut Milk with Cashew Brittle & Pandan

  • Loaded Baked Potato, a flavor collaboration with Michael Voltaggio that “on a playful note, where savory collides with sweet” is loaded with bacon chocolate crumbs, onion juice caramel, and white cheddar cookie dough.
  • Sweet Corn, Waffle Cones & Caramel, a flavor collaboration  with April Bloomfield that has sweet corn as the foundation and then folds in chocolate covered waffle cones, salted brown butter, and ribbons of vanilla caramel
  • Mint Leaves with Sea Urchin Meringues, a flavor collaboration  with Jenn Louis with west coast harvested sea urchin and fruity Italian pimente d’espelet that are utilized to make little meringues then folded into the steeped in mint leaves ice cream
  • Hawaiian PB&J, a flavor collaboration  with Gabe Rucker, which translates to toasted bark from a Heart of Palm tree, peanut butter crumbles, and caramelized pineapple jelly
  • Coconut Milk with Cashew Brittle & Pandan, a flavor collaboration  with Gregory Gourdet which results in a vegan ice cream built on a coconut ice cream foundation with spiced, candied, and compressed pineapples, hand-burned cilantro-pandan caramel, and crunchy brittle spiked with red Thai chilies.

CRAZY right? INTRIGUED? I am! You can check out these flavors at Scoop shops at 3345 SE Division St, 2035 NE Alberta St, or 838 NW 23rd Ave. Salt and Straw is also one of the participants for the Oregon Grand Bounty Tasting on Fri and Sat 20/21 12:00pm – 5:00pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Tickets for this event ($60, all inclusive) are still available for the Friday Grand Tasting or Saturday Grand Tasting events!

Now don’t you want some ice cream?
