Tito’s Taquitos is Back!

Tito’s Taquitos which was highlighted by Kat at Portland Monthly last year as Portland’s Must-Try New Taco Cart has re-opened, moving from a small parking lot shared with a few other businesses on SW 46th to a 76 Gas Station parking lot on Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway that no longer has that teal color but offers more space for parking and a small covered eating area and catchy music as you await your crispy taquitos.

The potato taquitos come by default with Avocado Sauce and toppings of Cabbage, Cilantro, Queso Fresco, Pickled Onions, Radish. Then add on Birria Style beef braised low and slow for hours like you see here…

Or choose Shredded Chicken Thighs or Garlic Shrimp or Garbanzo Bean Al Pastor (marinated in a sweet and lightly spicy sauce topped with pineapple) or Mushroom Asada. They offer salsa de arbol, salsa de habanero, and avocado sauce – they need to start bottle that habanero because it was everyone’s favorite! Each order comes with four hand rolled taquitos.

Moore Food & Company in Moore Alley

Hidden a bit down a little alley between businesses on a block on SE Division, you may discover a little refuge of a food cart or two with an alfresco dining patio. The one anchored by duo family owned Moore Coffee and Moore Food & Company in Moore Alley, is a semi-hidden gem that feels like a living room while still being an outdoor space. There are the hanging lights. The rugs. The cushioned chair. The barber chair. The chessboard. The fire pit. The map of Middle Earth. The TMNT Raphael hanging out where the trays of food come from Moore Food & Co. The display of Crustables and mini-cereal boxes by the coffee van. the lure of Andy Capp’s hot fries. It feels like hanging out at your friend’s house with the interesting roommates when you are just out of college, laid back and comfortable and cool that everyone thinks of as your friend group’s base.

You are welcome to hang out or grab and go as early as 7am on Thursdays-Mondays when Moore Coffee (closed Tu/Wed but check their Instagram for their hours) helps you get your day going with espresso, americanos, cappuccino, latte, regular or iced coffee, or tea or chai, or Liquid Death water. Nothing fancy here, simple and to the point to get you fueled and going.

You can get pastries from Crema Bakery in the little case and the coffee is from Terrain Coffee Project. Oh all your beverages are coming from a 1978 VW Bus, pretty dope. Check their instagram or Sunday Bread Project because you may be lucky and on a first come first serve basis be able to enjoy this bagel and bread pop-up on select days.

For lunch and beyond, the main food cart Moore & Food Company begins from 12-9 or 10 (8pm Sun, closed Mon/Tu) with what they dub on their menu “The Sh!t” or “Other Sh!t” or “Kid Stuff” along with a bar offering 8 taps of beer or cider, a couple cans and wine and a michelada. The main section of the menu seems to be highlighting the cheesesteaks, which you can order with the regular steak meat or with chicken (or buffalo chicken style) on the gold standard of Cheesesteak, an Amoroso roll. You can get your cheesesteak with American, Provolone, Swiss, or Kraft Cheese Whiz.

Carts on the Square: Pioneer Courthouse Square Food Carts

If you haven’t been to Pioneer Courthouse Square, you may not know that recently the construction from the Parks Bond Renovation has been completed to add refurbish the old bricks, add new bricks (where you can purchase personalized bricks) and now as parts of Carts on the Square, there are also 5 food carts close to the eastbound Max stop offering a sample of Portland food flavors. Unlike the other food cart pods in downtown Portland, thanks to the location in Portland’s Living Room, you’ll find plenty of places to sit and eat, be it on the amphitheater like setup or at some tables and chairs, depending on what event may be scheduled at the Pioneer Courthouse Square Food Carts.

The view can’t be beat dining here either – al fresco, great people watching, and who knows what may be installed in the main square? Sometimes you’ll find a farmers market (Mondays), music concerts (Tuesdays and other days), movie showings on summer Friday evenings, or you may find people attending an Italian festival, or like next week, an Oregon State Fair Flash Fair on July 12 for a brief lunchtime preview of the Oregon State Fair. You should check the Square Events calendar to know what events are coming (many are free), but for now, here’s a look at the individual offerings of the Carts on the Square.

Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Carts on the Square are the 5 food carts located in the upper level of the square

The five carts that are located here at Pioneer Courthouse Square have been curated by Feast co-founder Mike Thelin as a consultant, and you can trust that each and everyone offers fresh, tasty food that can be trusted. All the carts are equipped Square payment so can take credit card as well as your cash of course. All are open for lunch, with one open for breakfast and one open as late at 6pm. The only question is, what do you feel like eating? Disclosure: some of the photos are from a tasting at their grand opening where I was able to sample some of the menu offerings, but I also had already visited some of the carts before, and also went back and visited them to taste most of the menus

Fried Egg Sandwiches

If you are looking for breakfast, the only cart you’ll find serving it up bright and early is Fried Egg I’m In Love. This cart has an original location on SE Hawthorne that has been serving up its famous fried egg sandwich with punny names for more then six years and helped elevate the breakfast sandwich scene in Portland when it opened. They are open 7am-3pm Mon-Fri, 7am-6pm Fri, and 8am-6pm Sat and Sun. You can even get your food faster by calling ahead to order.

All of their sandwiches are either served on toasted sourdough bread from Portland French Bakery or New Cascadia gluten-free bread (except for their burritos), eggs are sourced from local farms, cooked over-medium, and sprinkled with their special magic egg dust spices. The signature is the pesto kissed Yolko Ono, but I’m also a huge fan of the sandwich Free Range Against The Machine with fried egg, avocado, tomato, and havarti cheese. Sandwiches can also be made vegetarian and they have a house vegan patty.

Rice Bowls

If you are looking for a healthy option especially if you are vegetarian or vegan, this is a great cart to make your go-to. It’s extremely popular and successful- this downtown location is one of eight around the city. You’ll find them open 11am-3pm Mondays through Saturdays.

Dosirak Food Cart

I admire a food cart that knows it has such a spectacular single dish that they are going to devote themselves to that one dish. That’s what the Dosirak Food Cart does with its Teriyaki Chicken. They’ve had their loyal fans since 2009, which is a testament of what a simple but great offering they provide.

Located at  SW 4th and College and open 10:30 AM – 6 PM on weekdays only, this lunchbox cart (Dosirak means lunchbox) makes ordering simple as you just have to decide whether you want the mandoo (dumplings) or not and whether you want your rice to be white rice or brown rice.  Or you could just order a bunch of mandoo, but why would you turn down this chicken?

The red chili sauce you see in my photos I added, but the rest of the sauce is the marinade of that teriyaki chicken.

The food is hearty, filling, but an excellent value (that whole thing is $7 and includes salad, rice, 2 mandoo and all that chicken you see, plus your choice of various hot sauces if you’d like). You can’t help but feel good supporting this small little business with its super nice owners when the weather is cold and they are in their cart, braving the dark gloomy day with their cheerful bright cart and their bright smiles as they make your lunchbox.

The wait usually isn’t long as they assemble your lunchbox, but in case you didn’t bring your umbrella that day and only have your rain jacket, you can call ahead and order so that it’ll be ready as soon as you get there using their number (503) 896-3493.

Bing Mi Food Cart

When it starts into the winter season, I always try to make extra effort to support a local Portland food cart if I can because it’s a hard time for them. They are still staying up late/getting up early to prep the food, but then seeing so many less people come out because of the colder/rainier weather.

While all customers do is endure running out there to grab the food and then bring it back to eat, the food cart owners are left all day in their small food cart abode, just looking out into the grey skies and feeling perhaps the sideways wind blow into them if they are unlucky. If they are lucky, they might have a little window to try to build up a little warmth while they are waiting for customers, but as soon as they slide it open to welcome you, remember all that is gone!

Bing Mi! food cart, located at SW 3rd and Ash (UPDATE: it seems now they are moving to SW 9th & Alder and will be there starting next week) specializes in one main dish: JianBing.

Jianbing (or jian bing) is a crepe like snack that is popular in Northern Chinese cities. You get it from streetside stalls, so it seems a perfect fit to be a food cart in Portland. In China people eat it for breakfast, as a snack, or after drinking.

A jianbing by Bing Mi! includes scrambled egg, black bean paste, chili sauce, green onion, cilantro, pickled vegetables, and big flat pieces of wonton cracker. You get a choice of spiciness to the chili sauce. Also, you can get extra egg or extra cracker, or add sausage to your bing if you’d like. Without the extra protein a jianbing is a light meal. Really jianbing can be filled with anything, so I wonder if over time we might see more special additions available.

When you get it made fresh, it is bundled up in paper so you can hold it and warm both hands as you are enjoying the soft and crispy textures with every bite.

Bing Mi! has only been open barely a month, and I appreciate that they are bringing something unique to the food cart scene. They are open 7:30 to 3:00, which is perfect for a breakfast or lunch that you can eat on the go!

Have you ever heard of jianbing before?
