Portland Dining Month: Quartet

I was pleased to see Quartet on the list for Portland Dining Month, as it is a restaurant that is relatively new on the Portland dining scene as it just opened in February. It is located on the South Waterfront, with views of the Willamette River and depending on where you are sitting, several famous Portland bridge (most recognizably Hawthorne Bridge- this post from Portland Travel Tips highlights Portland bridges) or even Mount Hood. The dining room is spectacular, something that fits right in with the fine dining restaurant in one of the big cities like Chicago, New York- specifically this space reminded me a lot of Spiaggia.

The scale of the ceiling to where you are seated in plush chairs is impressive, and one wall of the restaurant is essentially all glass to showcase the waterfront and city viewing. A small moat/river and waterfall runs through dividing the bar area from the dining area. Where we were seated, we were right next to a baby grand piano that you can tell is used to provide live music, though not on the evening we dined. You can tell this is a multi-million dollar space.

The service was smooth and very professional, which stands out in a city where mostly the waitstaff takes a more casual approach to serving its guests, as befits a more casual dining culture. Quartet aims for a more formal dining experience that is refined and takes advantage of the palatial atmosphere. That is one of the reasons I haven’t visited- it really felt like a special occasion type of place, one where we would be completely comfortable dressing up- and most people we saw were dressed more fashionably than I normally see. Despite asking about it a few times this month, F had sprung the 5:45pm invitation/reservation on me after I had already left for work, and I wished I had known beforehand so I could have dressed up a bit, such as worn a summer dress. Although we were not treated differently, both of us felt under-dressed , particularly me trying to hide the fact I was wearing my Nikes for all my walking and jeans under the tablecloth. Meanwhile, F noted on his Foursquare checkin “Way too nice looking in here for the likes of me.”

I started with a spicy drink, the cocktail called “The Strand” with Serrano infused Tequila Avion, fresh grapefruit, honey syrup with a sugar rim that balanced a bit of spicyness with the refreshing grapefruit and sweetness from honey well. We also were given great little dinner rolls that were served with a sweet praline butter that I had entirely too much of. I love the thoughtful touch of detail of a butter that is already soft for spreading, and then to take it up to even more elegance with infusing it with flavor is a big win on the dining experience side.

First Course

Q Salad – blended greens, jicama, Cajun pumpkin seeds, lemon-honey-Dijon dressing. It looked nice, but did not seem anything special to me- it could have been from anywhere, and certainly would not have been what I guessed was from a high end restaurant. I could barely detect any dressing at all had been added. I felt mixed. I wanted it to work so much because of the ambiance, yet felt a bit let down, and wasn’t sure whether it was because it was bad day in the kitchen and someone just didn’t dress my salad.

This was then followed by a lemon sorbet palate cleanser, whose tartness was really refreshing. This brought me back into the fine dining mindset that had been established with that roll and flavored butter, ahh.

Second Course

4 options here, including the vegetarian Butternut squash and Gorgonzola raviolis – hazelnut asparagus, arugula, tomato confit, Pecorino Tartufo, Vincotto, and my choice which was the Flank steak with braised baby bok choy, whipped Yukon Potato mash.

  • Butternut squash and Gorgonzola raviolis with hazelnut asparagus, arugula, tomato confit, Pecorino Tartufo, Vincotto
  • Flank steak with braised baby bok choy, whipped Yukon Potato mash
  • Pan-roasted chicken breast with fried Brussels sprouts, goat cheese-chive grits, cranberries, toast hazelnuts, maple-vinegar sauce
  • Jade halibut – fried vegetable sushi du jour, yuzu ponzu, ginger-scallion slaw

Both our dishes were beautifully presented, and tasted as fine as they looked.

Not everything was well though- the miss was definitely an extra side dish I ordered, the Yukon Gold potatoes au gratin with gorgonzola which were a creamy mess. The au gratin that had created the craving for me to order it again, from Urban Fondue, was half the price and 3 times better.

Third Course

Key lime pie with fresh berries was decent but nothing that was particularly memorable for me, not sure whether my previous experience with Florida key lime pies has spoiled me so tart I am salivating as I eat them (sounds weird, but it just means it’s soooo good).

You still have one more week to enjoy Portland Dining Month, so snap up this chance to dine at Quartet- usually the entree prices alone are regularly the price of what Portland Dining Month’s 3 courses for $29 nets you. Come get your fancy fine dining at a unique for Portland high end romantic atmosphere, all at an affordable price while it lasts. Make your Portland Dining Month reservations via OpenTable so that Downtown Portland will also make a donation to the Oregon Food Bank if you go this month! Remember, Portland Dining Month only lasts until the end of June!

Check out my other Portland Dining Month escapades: I ate at Quartet, Accanto, Urban Fondue, Fratelli, H50 out of my initial list!

I’ve already raved about Pulehu Pizza and their delicious grilled pizzas in a previous post, so here are just some photos so you can see the awesomeness I procured from their food cart truck at 4th and Stark… Here’s a photo of their very cool truck.

A Dinner at Ox

Photo essay of a wonderful meal at Ox Restaurant with one of my work teams… If you want words, I reviewed Ox during my first visit last year.

I welcomed myself to Ox with the Tijuana Monk with Reposado Tequila, Benedictine, Lemon, Lime, Egg White at the Whey Bar

The table started with amuse-bouches, a creamy soup balanced by a bit of chili oil heat

Then came Bread, butter, and chimichurri sauce (a garlic and parsley sauce that accompanies grilled steak in Argentina). I wish they would pre-cut the bread a bit as the knives at our setting have a tough battle against the crust here.

My favorite course that evening was the starter that I promised myself last time I would get during my next visit… Ox’s Fresh Clam Chowder, Smoked Marrow Bone, Spring Onion, Jalapeño . . . SO GOOD

My drink with dinner- a bubbly celebration called Life After Paris with Prosecco, Pineapple, Anise Sorbet, and Kubler Absinthe

Then, time for the main courses. This wasn’t my entree, but look at this beautiful Wild Alaskan Halibut, on the Bone with Toasted Garlic & Lemon (12 oz) – unfortunately they did not have the whole fish offering this evening that I had been eyeing at my previous meal here. Meanwhile, for my dinner this time I shared the Asado Argentino for 2 that includes Grilled Short Rib, House Chorizo & Morcilla Sausages, Skirt Steak, Sweetbreads, and also 2 sides, Fried Russet Potatoes with Horseradish Aïoli and Dill (simple but perfect!), Green Salad (very plain, I didn’t see anything of note except that at least there were healthy veggies on the table).

Additional sides that we shared family style across our table of 8 were this amazing dish of Gratin of Grilled Radicchio, Spring Peas & White Beans, Bagna Cauda Cream, Breadcrumb (I am now in love with Bagna Cauda Cream); a salad of Swiss Chard, Roasted Beets, Meyer Lemon Hollandaise, Smoked Salmon Roe, Chive; and Asparagus Risotto with Parmigiano Reggiano, Mascarpone, Morel Mushrooms.

And look at these desserts! Ox’s precious sweet dessert of Vanilla Tres Leches Cake, Fresh Strawberry Ice Cream, Meyer Lemon Curd, Dulce de Leche Alfajor Cookie was what I had, but I was just as tempted (and jealous) of this Dark Chocolate Cake, Malted Milk Chocolate Mousse, Toasted Peanut Anglaise, Malbec Marshmallow.

Foods earlier this month: Morso, Pupusas, Mandarin House

Just rounding up some other good eats I enjoyed during this month…

A lovely cheese plate from Morso:

A lovely cheese plate from Morso PDX

Cheese pupusa from Salvadoran Pupusas and Tamales, a food cart at 4th and Hall, also known as “Fatima’s Pupusas”

Cheese pupusa from Salvadoran Pupusas and Tamales

And a multi course dinner with a group at Mandarin House for some Northern Chinese cuisine: this place is hidden away on the 2nd floor by the Saturday Market/Skidmore Fountain, and I was fortunate to go with someone that knows Chinese and can order off of the Chinese menu. I remember there used to be someone in Chicago who would go to various restaurants and translate these “secret menus” that were only in the native language for food adventurers, and some people would specifically go to his site to be able to pick out a place specifically to find new food dishes and/or have an authentic food experience. I don’t think there is anything quite like that here in PDX yet… idea for someone out there? If you do visit, don’t judge by the way it looks- it is typical in that it looks like a hole in the wall hidden secret, but there is something going on in the kitchen.

Anyway, my dinner here included:

  • Kimchi daikon and roasted peanuts side dishes
  • Sliced, marinated pigs ear, pig feet, and beef tendon Appetizer plate
  • Handmade dumplings
  • Mushrooms with garlic sauce
  • Braised Pork shoulder with baby bok choy
  • Homestyle Tofu
  • Spicy Fish Stew
  • Individual bowls of handmade soup noodle with Chinese mustard greens
  • Pork, tofu, and clear bean noodles
  • Chicken Fried Rice

Can you pick out which dish is which below? I admit 2 of the dishes above are not pictured.

Artigiano – Yukon Gold Gnocchi in Gorgonzola-Cream Sauce

Artigiano– fine dining quality Italian food from a food cart.  It’s amazing that they make their fresh homemade pasta all in a cart, and they also source local ingredients to complete the dish. Seriously, this is tablecloth restaurant quality stuff, the kind of food that I would expect with candles and sparkly chandeliers… but instead you get to enjoy it al fresco on the streets of SE Division.

Here is a photo of their meltingly delicious gnocchi, one of their handmade pasta dishes from their menu. This is the Yukon Gold Gnocchi in Gorgonzola-Cream Sauce with Filberts hazelnuts, and along with some arugula, parmigiano reggiano, and ground pepper with a touch of vinaigrette to help balance the richness… and a nice piece of bread to wipe up the sauce afterwards. I don’t know where the gnocchi kept disappearing so quickly- it was in my mouth and then gone like waking up from a good dream and trying to remember it quickly before it fades- and I kept taking spoonfuls and then I had no more, sad. 🙁

Recently the recipe for this dish for this dish was shared in Mix Magazine as part of an article on Comfort Food, Italian Style: Five Portland chefs share recipes. As Artigiano owner is quoted as saying the article regarding this dish…

“There’s nothing more comforting than the melt-in-your-mouth texture of perfectly made potato gnocchi,” says proprietor Rachael Grossman.

I agree- I barely noticed the gloomy cloudy skies of a rainy spring day as I sat beneath the little tent next to their cart to embrace the comfort from this dish.

Don’t let a rainy blustery day stop you from getting your pasta: you can call in take-out orders, and they have parking available in the Larry’s Lighting Repair Lot on 33rd & Division after 5pm for your quick pick up and go!
