Carts on the Square: Pioneer Courthouse Square Food Carts

If you haven’t been to Pioneer Courthouse Square, you may not know that recently the construction from the Parks Bond Renovation has been completed to add refurbish the old bricks, add new bricks (where you can purchase personalized bricks) and now as parts of Carts on the Square, there are also 5 food carts close to the eastbound Max stop offering a sample of Portland food flavors. Unlike the other food cart pods in downtown Portland, thanks to the location in Portland’s Living Room, you’ll find plenty of places to sit and eat, be it on the amphitheater like setup or at some tables and chairs, depending on what event may be scheduled at the Pioneer Courthouse Square Food Carts.

The view can’t be beat dining here either – al fresco, great people watching, and who knows what may be installed in the main square? Sometimes you’ll find a farmers market (Mondays), music concerts (Tuesdays and other days), movie showings on summer Friday evenings, or you may find people attending an Italian festival, or like next week, an Oregon State Fair Flash Fair on July 12 for a brief lunchtime preview of the Oregon State Fair. You should check the Square Events calendar to know what events are coming (many are free), but for now, here’s a look at the individual offerings of the Carts on the Square.

Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Carts on the Square are the 5 food carts located in the upper level of the square

The five carts that are located here at Pioneer Courthouse Square have been curated by Feast co-founder Mike Thelin as a consultant, and you can trust that each and everyone offers fresh, tasty food that can be trusted. All the carts are equipped Square payment so can take credit card as well as your cash of course. All are open for lunch, with one open for breakfast and one open as late at 6pm. The only question is, what do you feel like eating? Disclosure: some of the photos are from a tasting at their grand opening where I was able to sample some of the menu offerings, but I also had already visited some of the carts before, and also went back and visited them to taste most of the menus

Fried Egg Sandwiches

If you are looking for breakfast, the only cart you’ll find serving it up bright and early is Fried Egg I’m In Love. This cart has an original location on SE Hawthorne that has been serving up its famous fried egg sandwich with punny names for more then six years and helped elevate the breakfast sandwich scene in Portland when it opened. They are open 7am-3pm Mon-Fri, 7am-6pm Fri, and 8am-6pm Sat and Sun. You can even get your food faster by calling ahead to order.

All of their sandwiches are either served on toasted sourdough bread from Portland French Bakery or New Cascadia gluten-free bread (except for their burritos), eggs are sourced from local farms, cooked over-medium, and sprinkled with their special magic egg dust spices. The signature is the pesto kissed Yolko Ono, but I’m also a huge fan of the sandwich Free Range Against The Machine with fried egg, avocado, tomato, and havarti cheese. Sandwiches can also be made vegetarian and they have a house vegan patty.

Rice Bowls

If you are looking for a healthy option especially if you are vegetarian or vegan, this is a great cart to make your go-to. It’s extremely popular and successful- this downtown location is one of eight around the city. You’ll find them open 11am-3pm Mondays through Saturdays.

Jake’s Grill and Anderson Ranches Lamb

Jake’s Grill is one of those classic Portland restaurants offering its American food menu of steaks and seafood as part of the Sentinel hotel (previously the Seward Hotel, and Elks Temple, and then later the Governor Hotel. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places). Although it is owned by McCormick & Schmick’s, Jake’s still maintains a lot of autonomy over its sourcing and menu. For May, they are featuring special Pasture to Plate menus utilizing Anderson Ranches Lamb. Here’s a look at my favorites of the Jake’s Grill and Anderson Ranches Lamb dishes.
Jake's Grill and Anderson Ranches Lamb Pasture to Plate specials menu: the grilled center cut lamb ribs with curry sauce, pomegranate molasses, and saba glaze Jake's Grill and Anderson Ranches Lamb Pasture to Plate specials menu: a roasted rack of lamb with spring vegetables, washington cherry chutney, and mustard lamb demi-glace

Anderson Ranches has been in the lamb business for 5 generations, and is located in the Willamette Valley. Their lamb is 100% grass fed and free range. Their flock are fed no antibiotics, growth stimulants, feed addictive and growth hormones. They graze on free range pastures on rolling foothills and open fields to roam and eat what they like and grow at their natural pace. Anderson Ranches farming uses sustainable practices and practices complementary to raising sheep such as the sheep helping with seed crop or weeds that control growth for trees or for other farmers to reduce need for herbicide. Supporting Anderson Ranches is supporting a thoughtful local business.

Meanwhile, Jake’s Grill is then taking their great lamb product and utilizing it in both traditional and in creative dishes. If you think you don’t like lamb because it’s gamey or you think lamb only comes so red and medium rare, you will be very pleasantly surprised at the huge range of options they’ve come up here between Jake’s Grill and Anderson Ranches Lamb.

Tusk Weekend Happy Hour

I’ve raved about Tusk before, which totally delivers on the hype the food writers in media have given it with its fresh, seasonal, farm to table Mediterranean food.  Tusk only takes reservations for their dinner, or if your table for their brunch (served weekends only) is 8 people or more. But, anyone looking to enjoy Tusk there is double good news. First, in the past month or so, they have completely enclosed their outdoor patio. The end result is really increasing their capacity for seating and protecting you from the sometimes moody spring weather so the area is usable all year round. Secondly, there is now a Tusk Weekend Happy Hour. Instead of closing between brunch and dinner, they offer happy hour drinks and eats from 2:30 – 5 PM. Here’s a detailed look at their offerings.
Tusk Weekend Happy Hour, served Saturday Sunday 2:30-5PM between brunch and dinner. A great way to slip in between the brunch and dinner rush

First, drinks. Tusk will be offering a rotating menu of three special happy hour cocktails available only during weekend happy hour, and three wines by the glass (all under $10) as well as beer. Don’t worry – the full Tusk cocktail menu will also be available.

The Mr. Kiss cocktail features Olmeca Altos Plata tequila, lime, tahini, ghost pepper, and chocolate. Despite the wide ranging combination, the cocktail flavors are pretty tame – mostly a little bit of lime and tequila citrus followed by a little savory from the chocolate and hint of heat from the ghost pepper, but not spicy at all, don’t worry.

The Hazy Jane cocktail is one of their signature drinks and offers Reyka vodka, almond, house made basil syrup, ginger, lemon, rose, and yogurt. The end result is light and refreshing with just a little bit of creamy mouthfeel from the yogurt.

Foodwise, the happy hour menu is filled with a sampler of some of Tusk’s best dishes, not only priced lower but also are sized perfectly for filling your whole table with lots of little dishes to try everything. Make sure you also try everything with a little bit of the 3 condiments on the table of Aleppo chile oil, za’atar, and cumin salt, to see how they enhance the flavors of any dish.

Cocktail Classes with House Spirits Distillery

Have you ever had spirits from House Spirits Distillery? You may have enjoyed these local spirits in cocktails around Portland without even knowing it. Besides offering a distillery tasting room where during a visit you can try tastings of their liquors, at their tasting room you can also try their whiskey, spirit, and cocktail flight (or try a particular cocktail individually). You can also join in one of their free distillery tours. But did you also know they offer special cocktail classes? Having attended one myself, I can highly recommend it as you will get your money’s worth in learning at least 5 types of cocktails and making them hands on and tasting them, as well as the rest of the knowledge you will gain when you attend the cocktail classes with House Spirits Distillery.

For instance, for my class, which was called the Bitter Truth and centered on learning, trying, and using bitters, I was able to make multiple cocktails as you’ll see below. The cocktails centered around their Westward Whiskey, Volstead Vodka, Krogstad Aquavit, and Casa Magdalena Rum, so we got to try cocktails with all the liquors. Here’s a look at the setup before we messed it up making drinks – you can see my “Welcome House Spirits Cocktail” also in the video from my Instastories. Tip: wear comfortable shoes because you will be standing making cocktails during the entire class.

We started with a simple classic recipe dramatically named here, The Cocktail- basically an Old Fashioned. This simple start also is when we talked about how much is in a dash, how to know stir and when to stop stirring (stir for 20 seconds with back of spoon to the glass sides, and the glass should feel chilled), and tips on how long simple syrup lasts (4 weeks!) and freezing lemon juice in ice cube trays.

Urdaneta for Portland Dining Month

Earlier this week, I had a chance to enjoy Urdaneta for Portland Dining Month. I will also be back to Urdaneta shortly for their Basque Supper Club. If you haven’t heard, on Sunday April 8th at 6PM Basque Supper Club will be doing the only Portland screening of the film “The Txoko Experience: The Secret Culinary Space of the Basques”. Basically, Txoko is the Basque version of a supper club. This Basque Supper Clubevent, with tickets already sold out, includes watching the movie, a Q&A with the scriptwriter  and a Txoko inspired 6 course dinner by Urdaneta. Chef Javier was inspired to create Urdaneta and Basque Supper Club based on his own childhood experiences with his grandfather’s txoko so I am super excited to learn more about Txoko and get a personal take story-wise and food-wise from Urdaneta.

I’ll recap that experience and meal later, but for now I can’t emphasize enough that you have 2 meals left to get over there for Portland Dining Month. Fortunately, some of the dishes are also on their regular menu, so even if you can’t make it today and tomorrow you can still enjoy some of these dishes.

This is not part of the Portland Dining Month, menu, but it is impossible to resist ordering some pintxos every time I come here whether I am only coming here for Dumpling Week or for Portland Dining Month. Go ahead and give in and get a few starter bites after browsing the menu with the marinated olives. A sherry flight or sangria or Basque cider (sidra) would also be great choices to wash down your pinxto bites.

The Urdaneta pinxtos you see are the

  • Sobrasada, a soft chorizo in fry bread with grilled halloumi and truffle honey;
  • Albondiga, a lamb meatball with house tater tot, spicy brava sauce, apple, sofrito aioli;
  • Camarón, grilled shrimp al ajillo with tomato conserva, ajo dulce, chili, dill, and toasted bread;
  • Morcilla, a grilled blood sausage with dad’s marinated peppers, piquillo jam, piparra, and toasted bread
