Scotch Lodge:

đŸ„ƒCURIOSER AND CURIOSER: Shiitake Butter-Washed Westward American Single Malt, Giffard Cacao, Vanilla
🍮TARTARE PAIRING: Pine Nuts, Shiitake, Cacio de Roma, Rakkyo
(raising funds for Zenger Farm)
I admit this was my favorite because I loved how the two complimented each other, and it was the cocktail that I was the most tempted to have a second round. I didn’t think the Cacio crisp was that great of a vehicle for the tartare, but I was more than happy to scoop it up by the spoonful directly to my mouth and take a bite of crisp. Be careful though – once you visit Scotch Lodge you may find yourself staying to order more of the incredible food and drink here, soaking up the elegant speakeasy vibes, and never proceed forward on your tartare crawl!

Bellwether Bar:

đŸ„ƒNO. 56: Westward Whiskey Original, Salted Maple Syrup, Tiki Bitters and Citrus Oil
🍮TARTARE PAIRING: Northwest Beef, Cured Duck Yolk, and Aioli served with Rustic Sourdough
(raising funds for Milk Crate Kitchen)
This cocktail has a sweet saltiness from the maple syrup, but is the perfect balance for the classic tartare here which has a touch of saltiness to it and that freshly toasted buttery bread is so good we asked for extra just of the bread. I love that they have an outdoor patio space in the back that is covered and has some heaters if the weather is nice, but the homey interior of this Mt Tabor bar is also so comforting and cozy.

Pink Moon Dinner with Tournant

As a fan of Tournant, I was beyond enamored of the announcement of their Full Moon Dinner Series for this year. For these dinner experiences, they would bring together “nature, food, art and ceremony as the full moon rises over Oregon’s wine country”. The series selected four full moons to celebrate: the pink moon in April, strawberry moon in June, sturgeon moon in August, and harvest moon in September. The pink moon in April was the one that resonated with me, and I attended the inaugural dinner of the series, the pink moon dinner on April 16.

Tournant is well known for their partnership with fisherman (particularly for signature fresh shucking of oysters by for you), farmers, foragers, and combining peak seasonal ingredients with open fire cooking over an outdoor fire pit. I’ve enjoyed every multi-course feast they have prepared over the years and many meals, never been disappointed, and frequently wonder at how they keep coming up with new recipes and ideas to highlight ingredients time and time again. So the fact they don’t announce the exact location of the dinner until closer to the event didn’t bother me at all – note that the dinner settings will vary. For the Pink Moon Dinner, about a week before the dinner they announced in email to those with tickets the venue would be at Dominio IV in Carlton, inside their historic and renovated red barn.

We were warned ahead of time to dress warmly as historic barn is not insulated, as well as bring proof of vaccination. I know Tournant has set up their long dinner tables totally open in the elements before – in fields, in the woods, along the sands of the ocean or rocks of a river, even on the snow directly – breathtakingly beautiful events every one (you should look at the photos in the link). But still I was just grateful there would be cover in case there were April showers, and cold winds since literally earlier in the week Portland area had been experiencing snow and random hailstorms.

Portland Drink and a Bite Highlight: Ox

For Foodie Friday today, I continue my series highlighting a Portland Drink and a Bite of food that I think not only is best in class within Portland, but is a classic representation of the character of Portland. Of course, that Portland Drink and a Bite Highlight is also delicious, and unique. This week’s highlight is a Portland meets Argentina grilled meat haven, Ox Restaurant. I’ve been loving the Dentons since I first visited Metrovino (now closed) and then when they opened Ox I rejoiced and it’s always on my recommendation list for Portland visitors. Even if you have vegetarians in your group, Ox offers a few vegetarian options and a lot of large sides, so I find it a better way to enjoy a meaty meal even in a mixed group.

Now Ox doesn’t take reservations unless you’re a group of at least  six  – which I skirt around by being super selfish and just going to Ox on my own as I often luck out with a seat at the counter. Sometimes this strategy still doesn’t work out and I still need to wait, so I’ll tell you my plan B – I go next door to their drinking “wait room” of Whey Bar and get that beautiful Ox Blood cocktail and enjoy their house ricotta and it doesn’t really feel like I’m in limbo waiting at all. The Ox Blood Cocktail looks gorgeous and festive all year round.

Ox Blood Cocktail with Dickel Whiskey

The Ox Blood cocktail gets its red color from Beet Syrup, , and the rest is Bourbon, Lemon, and Tarragon. I like to mentally tell myself this cocktail is for the goodness of my health, thanks to the vitamins and minerals in beets including lowering blood pressure. Sometimes I prescribe it to myself after a bad day.

Once you do get seated at Ox, I’m sure you don’t need me to prompt you to enjoy a grilled meat of some sort. Instead, the bite I’m going to insist you also get is Ox’s Clam Chowder, Smoked Marrow Bone, Spring Onion, Jalapeño . . . SO GOOD and so unique with it’s combination of creamy and spicy and smoky and rich but not heavy somehow thanks to just the right hint of saltiness from the seafood. It’s got all the textures, all the colors, it’s the best clam chowder I’ve ever had outside of Boston, but don’t make me choose between the nostalgic tradition of Boston and this new-fashioned genius take. Plus, you don’t have to get on plane to get access to this beauty.

Don’t get distracted by all that meat on the menu – well by all means definitely get some meat, but get the chowder too. It’s the best clam chowder in Portland.

Have you been to Ox? Did you have a favorite dish there? Have you had the clam chowder there, or where do you like to get your clam chowder?

Cocktails of Jackknife Bar at the Sentinel Hotel

Jackknife Bar is located just by the entrance/lobby of downtown’s Sentinel Hotel (formerly the Governor’s Hotel) on SW 11th and Alder, only a few blocks from the City Target, and brought to you by the minds behind Dig A Pony, Bye & Bye, and Sweet Hereafter. The space inside Jackknife is very dark and art deco- I wouldn’t be surprised to see fellow patrons decked out in the garb of the roaring 20s in here.

The atmosphere is very relaxed, with a very large bar if you want to chat with new people and watch the bartenders at work crafting drinks or pouring from their more than a dozen taps. Or you can sink yourself into groups of couches or big simple wooden tables and chairs that almost feels like you can light up a cigar and channel some of the previous guests of this historic hotel built in 1909.

If you’d like, Jackknife also has some seats by the bright giant windows facing the street and a few white plastic tables outside if you want to keep yourself grounded in the current era. In the back, huge booths seating almost a dozen people around a lounge table in shadows seems like a secret VIP area ready made to accommodate a celebrity’s entourage.

I was able to try 4 of the Jacknife Bar house drinks. The first, Pavlov’s Bell cocktail with vodka, espresso, coconut, cinnamon, vanilla salt was deeply satisfying with its rich flavors.

On the lighter, more refreshing side there’s

  • Bonnie Parker cocktail (their take on a Moscow Mule) with Old Taylor whiskey, toasted pecan, lime, honey, and Jackknife ginger beer

  • Bye Bye Sweet Pony with whiskey, quince, lemon, maple syrup, Jackknife ginger beer, and salt both taste light but have a hint of depth

  • Days of Thunder house cocktail with vodka, lemon, cucumber, mint, jalapeno, Mello Yello

The toasted pecan, lime and honey of the Bonnie Taylor is subtle, while the Bye Bye Sweet Pony’s quince and maple syrup and salt combination make it dangerously easy to drink down the delicious. As my personal taste I really like spicy drinks, so the nostalgia of Mello Yello’s citrusy flavors (which I haven’t had since much younger days) added with the little bit of jalapeno burn was very enjoyable. Particularly, with the big heat wave in weather during which I had some of these beverages, the Bye Bye Sweet Pony and Days of Thunder were really a big relief as the thermometer inched towards 100.

Foodwise, I tried the Pimento Cheese, which comes with tomato relish and butter crackers. The butter crackers were so buttery that they crumbled in any attempt to spread the cheese or relish, which is fine because then you can just eat it by the forkful and it would work well with any drink you order at the bar. Or just by itself. Just saying.

The Cheese Plate is generous in terms of how much cheese is on the plate. That ricotta topped with Bee Local Honey, similar to the pimento cheese, is addictive.

Meanwhile, the order of Beets which comes with fried ricotta, pickled fennel, smoked walnuts and dijon vin was a beautiful light option that is a good choice for anyone who is vegetarian or gluten free.

On the vegetarian front, along with their bar burger there is also a vegan bbq tempeh burger so you don’t have to feel like a second class citizen with just this lovely, but admittedly not filling, salad. The only really filling food they offer on the menu are the two mentioned burgers and a ham and cheese sandwich, so the intention is to be a bar/lounge and not a place for a meal. On certain days, you may even find music with a DJ and dancing on weekends and for special events.
