The Reffen street food market

Reffen is a street food market in Copenhagen that is essentially a group of shipping containers bound by different communal dining areas each with different atmosphere. Each shipping container is its own business – most were offering food from all over the world, all blending like all the various diners at the tables, into a global melting pot. The Reffen street food market is in an unlikely location that you have to pass by several industrial parks which make you question whether you are going the right way… but once you are there, you can surprisingly dine even al fresco right by the water and across the harbor you can see The Little Mermaid and Amalienborg Palace.

Apparently they know visitors need reassurance so some sandwich boards let you know you’re not lost, you’re almost there.

At the Reffen street food market you’ll find more then 30 food carts, as well as some additional creative spaces that have popped up here. Some dining areas are covered with a roof only while some even had four walls. Every stall store is cashless and accepts credit cards only (or use cash to purchase a prepaid credit card) and uses recyclable or compostable foodwares to reduce waste.

Here’s a look at the cool feel of casualness combined with amazing food and hip dining. Most stalls took quite the care to customize theirs shipping container turned kitchen and storefront to each be unique.

The food menus at Reffen street food market offer such a diversity of options from carnivore to vegan, healthy to comfort food. All the menus are reviewed so this isn’t a case like in Portland food pods where you will find 5 gyro carts – they curate so avoid as much overlap as possible. You’ll find a place that specializes in crispy pork to skyr cheesecake, a cart devoted only to polenta, Filipino food to Indian dosa to Indonesian satay to food from the West African country of Gambia. And there’s still more spaces being developed – with more room for more food and creative vendors.

Our favorite that we tried this visit at Reffen street food market was Bao Bab, the Gambian cart, where we enjoyed a vegan and a chicken version (obviously two different servings) of their Domodar, a traditional African peanut butter strew with cabbage, carrots, sweet potato, rice, greens, lime, and chicken (if not vegan).

I also finally, after continuously passing the hot dog stands by because I was already full from some other sit down meal, had time for a Danish hot dog. This one is from Okologisk, made with organic sausage and in my case also had cheese inside, topped with crunchy fried onions, raw onions, pickles, and dressed with mustard, ketchup and remoulade.
