PDX Beer Week 2016 Highlights

This Thursday kicks off PDX Beer Week 2016, which lasts from June 9 to June 19. Yes, this is actually more than a week, but it’s been like that for years and I can’t complain about having more days to have more events to celebrate Portland beer. For these eleven days of fun, the events range from those showcasing new beers or particular beer styles to special collaboration food inspired or to be paired with beers. There are beer events for the beer geek like seminars, but there are also beer events that are accessible even to the casual or novice beer drinker like beer sampling.

In fact, there are quite a few limited edition collaborations available to celebrate Portland Beer Week 2016 that are beyond just drinking beer or beer events. Check out these special one off concoctions available at multiple locations throughout the duration of the 11 days of June 9-19.

  • Portland Brewing & Double Mountain‘s official beer of the 2016 Portland Beer Week – Subcontinental IPA. This is a ~7% ABV northwest IPA brewed with Indian spices like pepper, cardamom, clove, cumin and saffron. These spices highlight the beer’s biscuity malt base and tropical fruit hop notes, and I was surprised as the beer warmed a bit how the spices became more prominent and really tasty, particularly the cardamom and cumin for me. You can find 22 oz bottles at local beer bottle shops as well as Whole Foods who is doing a special free tasting at all their Portland Whole Foods locations on Friday June 10 and Wednesday June 16, as well as of course at the Portland Brewing and Double Mountain taprooms.

  • I tried Beer Bratwurst especially made for the Portland Brewing Taproom by SP Provisions using about 30 gallons of beer for every 100 pounds when making the bratwurst, and then the sausage is further cooked by simmering it in the beer and then you can enjoy it with the beer mustard!. Definitely for me this bratwurst is the best food pairing with the beer itself – or any beer, any time of year,

I have attended events of PDX Beer Week every year -and here’s a summary of events I wanted to highlight during this beer celebration week. For the full list of PDX Beer Week events, see their PDX Beer Week 2016 Events Calendar.

  • For any of you IPA loversEl Segundo Brewing from California is having a launch party Thursday, June 9 6 – 10 PM starring their very hop forward, taking place naturally at beer bar N.W.I.P.A. Then a week later, also at N.W. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, a nonprofit health and service organization supporting musicians and their families during medical emergencies.
  • One of my favorite beer festivals every year is the Portland Fruit Beer Festival. This year it has finally moved from the Burnside Brewing parking lot, which it has outgrown, to the shady North Park Blocks (NW 8th and Davis) with 40% more room and did I mention shade? Running from Friday, June 10 – Sunday June 12 this festival offers fruit beers, ciders for the gluten free, food trucks for eats and live music, and is all ages.
Portland Fruit Beer Festival 2016 Poster
I’ve highlighted Portland Fruit Beer Festival beers in the past in 2015 and 2014 and I’m going this year as well. I often go multiple times because of special tap beers they tap over the days. This year 29 breweries and 7 cideries are offering 36 regularly pouring taps of beers, plus 24 additional rare and rotating tap lines. Look for my personal picks list on Thursday and which I’ll update after attending on Friday!

  • For an alternate festival, celebrate  at the 1 night Rye Beer Festival with 20 Rye Beers from 20 participating breweries and Rye Beer Cocktails at Eastburn from Friday June 10 from 4 PM – 2 AM. Part of the proceeds of the Rye Beer Festival will benefit the Children’s Cancer Association. This year, highlights of the Rye Beer Festival include a whiskey back card offered for $10 that includes (3) 1/2 ounce shots of Russell’s Reserve Rye, Knob Creek Rye and Wild Turkey Rye and Jacob Grier will be creating a special rye beer cocktail combining specially brewed Rye Beer Festival official beer Back Pedal Brewing’s Oatmeal Ryesin Cookie beer with rye whiskey and other ingredients and other cocktails. At 10pm the fest will offer live music from The Cure cover band The Xploding Boys (no cover of you’re in by 8:30, and remember the proceeds go towards a great cause anyway).
  • For a different take on beers in a new way, the Randallized Beer Fest being held on Saturday June 11 (free, just pay for what you drink) at Imperial Taproom offers local beers poured through Randalls containing a variety of interesting ingredients to add new twists of flavors.
  • If you love Sour Beers, Saraveza Bottle Shop and Pasty Tavern on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12 all day will be pouring Cascade Brewing as part of a Cascade Invasion that includes a special Saraveza blend as well as Elderberry Blond, Nectarine Dream, Rose City Sour and Mixed Plum while also “putting out a massive selection of vintage Cascade bottles that we’ve been hoarding” for you to purchase.
Saraveza's Flight of Five Chili and Smoked Beers for Fire & Brimstone... Burnside Sweet Heat always glows in the glass it seems (front right)
For a more serious sour beer education, attend the Sour & Wild Ale Seminar presented by Oregon State University and panelists like Trevor Rogers (De Garde Breiwng), Christian de Benedetti (Wolves & People), Alex Ganum (Upright Brewing), Matt van Wyk (Alesong Brewing & Blending and formerly Oakshire) and Ben Edmunds (Breakside Brewery) at Tuesday, June 14 at 5:30 PM at Upright Brewing.
There’s even a sour beer festival, courtesy of Imperial hosting the Sour Solstice Sour Beer Festival on Saturday June 18 and a dozen sour beers to choose from on tap.

If you’re really into bourbon barrel aged Cascade, although not technically part of Portland Beer Week, Cascade is having Bourbon Barrel Week.5 from June 7-19 at Cascade Brewing and Raccoon Lodge.
  • I always want to promote beer pairings with food, so if you’re out in the Happy Valley area come out on Sunday June 12 3 PM – 6 PM to the Happy Valley Station Food Cart Pod with Alameda, Base Camp, Coalition, and Culmination breweries bringing beer out to the 24 food carts in a structure location, and the food carts will be offering Open House Special where Food Samples are $1, $2, & $3 so you can try all the food carts.
  • There are always new breweries opening up in Oregon so it may be heard to track them all. Thankfully there is the 101 on the newbies all at once that you can attend via the  New Oregon Breweries Showcase, this year happening at Bailey’s Taproom on Monday June 13 noon – midnight. The showcase will introduce you to 11 new breweries from Oregon, all opened within the last year and you will get a chance to meet the brewers and owners 5 – 8 PM as well as enjoy beers from newcomers Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery, Alesong Brewing & Blending, Ruse Brewing, Freebridge Brewing, Ancestry Brewing, Public Coast Brewing, Great Notion Brewing and more TBA. I will be at this event if you want to say hi!

The cost for the 4 courses of Sushi and Beers is $25, just  show up any time at Roscoe’s between 4:30 and 8:30 PM or until they run out.
  • If you are a Belgian Beer aficionado, look to the 5th Annual Battle of the Belgian beers with 4 Belgian beers versus 4 US Belgian-inspired styles on Tuesday, June 14 between 5-9 PM at Bazi Bierbrasserie with $15 for all eight 5 ounce tasters.
The next day, on Wednesday June 15 Bazi presents the annual Mussels from Brussels with five breweries (Breakside , Fat Head’s, Lompoc, pFriem, and Upright), five secret sauces created by each brewery for dipping in one pound of mussels served with fries, and paired with their Belgian-inspired beer, and you judge who is the winner. Seating for you/audience judges will take place every 30 minutes between 5:30-8:30 PM.
  • One of my favorite festivals all year is this one pairing Beer and Cheese at the Portland Beer and Cheese Festival (already sold out!), this year at the on Saturday, June 18 1 – 5 PM at Wayfinder Beer. Expertly pairing samples of beer with a sample of cheese times ten. 10 different beers from 10 different breweries with 10 amazing cheeses paired by Cheesemonger Steve Jones of Cheese Bar. • A new closing event for Portland Beer week this year is SNACKDOWN! on Sunday June 19th 12 – 4 PM at The Evergreen event space above Loyal Legion. SNACKDOWN! is a food and beer pairing event where 10 of Portland Chefs and 10 Oregon Brewers are paired into 10 Brewer/Chef teams to make their greatest snack and beer pairing. Guests will choose their favorite pairing and the winning team will be awarded the SNACKDOWN Belt! This event is designed to be more loose than a traditional beer pairing dinner. DJ Rev Shines will be keeping the party live, while the atmosphere is styled like a WWF style Smackdown with brewers and chefs hyping their pairing on the mic – possibly while sporting wrestling themed costume. WHAT? Yeah I will totally be there.

Are you going to any of the Portland Beer week events? Do any of those beer inspired items sound like something you want to try?

Disclosure: I attended a preview of the Limited Edition Portland Beer Week treats and a Portland Fruit Beer Festival media preview, but I was already planning on writing the Portland Beer Week post before the media previews, and I was not asked or compensated for this post and I purchased/pay my own way at any PDX Beer Week events I attend. I will always provide my honest opinion and assessment of all products and experiences I may be given. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are entirely my own.

Nel Centro

Nel Centro is one of those hidden gems of a restaurant. Most people don’t think to go dine or hang out at what is the restaurant of a hotel – and in many cases they are over priced, serving food for business expense accounts that are American staples generic enough to please any traveler.  But yet, you can’t deny that Imperial of Hotel Lucia and Departure and Urban Farmer of The Nines break that mold by pushing that envelope to bring good food that can comfort after a long work day but also allow creative license to wow you with deliciousness in new ways. It helps that Hotel Lucia and The Nines are boutique hotels – and so is Hotel Modera, which is where Nel Centro resides.

Nel Centro is also cousins with Hotel Eastland, home of the trendy Altabira Tavern by the Oregon Convention Center I’ve written about earlier. Hotel Modera is in Southwest Portland but still walkable to downtown, and located perfectly by theaters like Keller Auditorium and Arlene Schnitzer as well as PSU and the museums by the South Park Blocks.
Nel Centro Nel Centro

I don’t like to always advertise Nel Centro and how I adore their fire pit outdoor patio, mostly because I don’t want competition for those seats in the evening while sipping cocktails. So can I encourage you to go for lunch, dinner, or to their brunch that takes reservations…

Nel Centro specializes in cuisine of the French and Italian Riviera, bringing you options that are light and classic but the simplicity still promises plenty of flavor. For an authentic Italian Riviera touch, I enjoy that they offer foccacia as part of the complimentary bread service with dinner.

Perhaps start by sharing the Mussels with Garlic and Parsley available at lunch, happy hour, and dinner. There’s so many mussels included in the bowl they barely fit.

For lunch or happy hour, there’s also this fantastic Wild Mushroom and Gorgonzola Pizza which would be great to share with 4 or more as a starter – it has lots of bold full flavors. Or make it your main dish at the bar.

Meanwhile, a starter especially for happy hour and dinner service is this Duck Leg Confit with Kumquat Gastrique. This is a winning dish – I can eat this one all by myself.

They change their cocktail options seasonally, but also create special drinks to go with the theme of various theater productions. For instance, everyone at my table enjoyed The Magic Flute cocktail, a special creation for the Portland Opera Prosecco, Nardini Acqua di Cedro, Grapefruit Bitters – even someone who said she doesn’t usually like sparkling wine!

For the current Sweeney Todd production of Portland Opera, they have crafted the Sweeney Todd cocktail with Bulleit Bourbon, Luxardo Marschino, and Creme de Cacao.

Other drinks from productions in the past are still in the rotation by popular demand, such as the Ol’ Man River cocktail with Burnside Bourbon, Calisaya, and bitters, inspired by the Portland Opera’s 2015 run of Show Boat.

I usually skip right past the salad section of a menu, but the Nel Centro salad of Roasted Beets with Baked Ricotta, Arugula, Orange and Hazelnuts is seriously perfect. I appreciate the ratio of their fresh cheese to everything else to, don’t you? I’ve been loving this salad combo since 2011, believe it or not as proved by this previous blog post. Just for lunch, you can also imagine yourself at the French Riviera with the Grilled Tuna Niçoise Salad.

Another Italian Riviera famous dish is pesto – so you should give serious consideration to their lunch and dinner option of Spaghetti with Kale Pesto, Almonds and Pecorino. I like saving some of the complimentary focaccia at dinner to eat with the pesto so I can really pretend I’m there in Italy.
Nel Centro Spaghetti with Kale Pesto, Almonds and Pecorino Nel Centro Spaghetti with Kale Pesto, Almonds and Pecorino

At Nel Centro they make their pastas daily, so you won’t go wrong with other great pasta bets like the Spinach and Ricotta Tortelli with English Peas and Lemon or the Pappardelle with Braised Lamb Shoulder and Smoked Pecorino, both also available at lunch and dinner. OK OK I confess I pretty much want ALL their pasta dishes.

Spinach and Ricotta Tortelli with English Peas and Lemon from Nel Centro at lunch or dinner Spinach and Ricotta Tortelli with English Peas and Lemon from Nel Centro at lunch or dinner Pappardelle with Braised Lamb Shoulder & Smoked Pecorino at Nel Centro

In addition, at lunch Nel Centro offers a selection of intriguing sandwiches varying from Spit Roasted Pork with Mostarda di Frutta to one with Rotisserie Chicken with Bacon and Herb Aioli, Albacore Tuna Melt on Levain with Raschera cheese, or Fried Eggplant with Tomato Jam & Feta Cheese for the vegetarian. Seriously, one of the best and classiest business lunch options you can pick.

Meanwhile at dinner, the sandwich sections shifts into a heavier main entrees that include Rotisserie Chicken, Spit Roasted Pork Chop, Halibut, Grilled Skirt Steak or Grilled New York steak, or Lamb Shank.

For brunch, not only can you get the Duck Leg Confit with Kumquat Gastrique, Rotisserie Chicken sandwich or Spit Roasted Pork Sandwich that I mentioned above, but they have a Poached Eggs on Griddled Polenta with Cured Pork Loin & Sage Hollandaise. Yes. This particular poached eggs on polenta with pork dish is available every day to jump start your morning since it’s also on their normal everyday breakfast menu. It’s one of the things I love about hotel restaurants – I don’t have to always fight it out at brunch if something I love is on their regular breakfast rotation anyway.

This year marks Nel Centro’s seventh anniversary – congratulations! – and this milestone helps reinforce how they have been doing well all along, even without your knowledge. But now you’re in the know with me too.

One thing I should warn you is that it’s best to visit after the theater crowd leaves since there is a big hustle to get them in and out quickly that changes the airy open atmosphere – unless of course you are a theater goer yourself, then this will work out as they are experienced in making sure you will get to the show on time.

Which of these dishes intrigues you? Have you heard of or been to Nel Centro before?

Disclosure: I attended a complimentary bloggers/media dinner, but I also returned on my own and I have been at the restaurant several times previously. Santa Fe Travels: Visiting Plaza Blanca

Last week, I mentioned how we had a wonderful day at Bandelier National Monument. We had to park at the White Rock Visitors Center and take the required free shuttle to Bandelier. When we returned, while stopping at the visitor center for a quick bio break before the drive (I have never regretted, whenever there is a restroom available on car trips, stopping in if we’re already parked, just in case. Nope, never.) While there, we stopped and spoke with the knowledgeable people at the information desk on recommended other sights to see. Plaza Blanca was one I asked about as I had wonderful reviews on Tripadvisor, but there was precious little information on visiting Plaza Blanca logistics.
Plaza Blanca is 1 hour away from Santa Fe. Plaza Blanca, known also as the White Place, is a magical area located near Abiquiu, NM that inspired Georgia O'Keeffe.

They drew out on a map for us how to get there, as well as giving us a few other tips. When you are visiting a new place, I always like stopping at visitor centers. I browse through the brochures becomes sometimes eye candy can attract me to a new sight I hadn’t known of, there may be coupons for places I’m planning on going to anyway, and asking the locals who are in the know may reveal unique adventures off the regular beaten path.

The land belongs to Dar Al Islam Mosque, who generously allows people to still visit with no charge. When you arrive at the area, there will be a fork – the left goes to Dar Al Islam Mosque, while the right will go to a small area where you can park and walk to Plaza Blanca. It will be a gravelly bumpy road. When you first park, the view will probably look similar to this.

We almost had the area all to ourselves except for only three other cars during our visit. F and I probably spent a couple hours here, just mesmerized by the formations and the juxtapositions of shapes and colors. I can understand how Georgia O’Keeffe loved to look at this from her window, walk here, and even camp here, and naturally, paint here with so much inspiration everywhere.

Plaza Blanca also a great area to explore exploration of forms in black and white photography.

There are not words to fully explain the quiet beauty that Plaza Blanca offers, a feeling of isolation from the world, it’s like a secret treasure offering peacefulness and dramatic formations. It seems every few steps and a turn was so picturesque in a new way.

Plaza Blanca is about an hour north of Santa Fe in Abiquiu. You could make it a Georgia O’Keeffe themed day by visiting the museum in Santa Fe, driving to her Home and Studio for a tour in Abiquiu , and then getting away from the crowds at this secluded spot of Plaza Blanca a few miles away.

I’m not sure if you can really tell the scale – here’s me really up close to some of the rocks to give you an idea how massive they are.

There are no facilities here – I think the closest restroom is at Bode’s General Store which also offers some comfort food like chile (in frito pie or chili fries form!), burritos, and sandwiches that you can enjoy here or take with you.

Are you a Georgia O’Keeffe fan? Would you seek out visiting some of her natural inspirations like Plaza Blanca?

May 2016 Stitch Fix Box

I get my Stitch Fix boxes quarterly, and for my recent one I requested long dresses and tops to wear with leggings. If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix before, it’s a service where you can choose your style profiles based on questions and looking at example clothes. If you are interested in joining Stitch Fix, please consider using my Stitch Fix referral code!

Then, at a predetermined interval that you pick (I pick quarterly, but you can pick specific dates so it could be any time period you choose), a stylist will send you 5 items for you to try based on question you answer (don’t worry, some have pictures – and they have specific clothes for petites and maternity wear). Each box is hand selected based on what you would like in terms of price, your style, and you can request items such as clothing for a holiday party, for a vacation, for work, for going out, etc. You can even request specific designers or what you’ve seen in other people’s Stitch Fix boxes, which is why I always share and hope others also share what they get in their box.

Each box is different depending on the stylist – there are times I keep everything in the box like with my March 2015 box. And many of my favorite pieces in my current wardrobe are from the multiple other boxes I’ve shared before from Stitch Fix, even though I don’t always keep the whole box. A mixed box of some I like and some which were just no (although I still dutifully try on everything since I am at home and have been surprised before).

This time, there were several items that did not look great on the hanger – so I thought I’d also share the style card that is included with the fix so you can see some of the advice Stitch Fix provides in styling a piece at least two ways.

Market & Spruce Xader Short Sleeve Woven Back Sweatshirt

This was super comfy, and I liked how it was both casual with the front but a little sexy see through in the back. And look how cute it is styled either with light pieces or dark pieces!

But, I’m not one of those people that is ok with people seeing my bra – the ones I have are all very practical in being either nude color or black. I know there are plenty of people who do wear sheer shirts and wear pretty lacy bras and bralettes and it looks fine! It’s just my personal preference, so I didn’t keep this one.

Market & Spruce Ajak Belted Tunic

This looks terrible on the hanger, and it also didn’t look too great on me because it appeared too loose and shapeless. The colors are fun though for the summer, and the stylist pointed out how this could be a great piece under layers. Still, I did not keep it.

Gilli Kimberly Maxi Dress in my May 2016 Stitch Fix box

With the strappy back I don’t know why it took me like 5 minutes to even figure out how to hang this dress up. And the photos just don’t do justice to how lovely the cut of the dress is for the top, and how extremely soft and comfortable it is. The card does a much better job of showing how great this is.

OneMarket Toree Maxi Dress

I really liked hwo the dress looked before I tried it on – it looks perfect to wear to a garden party, be it a bridal shower or baby shower or even a wedding.

Unfortunately when I tried it on it fit too snug on my hips so I did not keep it. I’m not sure why when I scanned the card it came out looking more pink, but the dress is a peach color.

Crescent Allium Tie Waist Tunic

This was my favorite piece of the box. There’s something that is so classic but fresh about this design. And I really like the color combination of blue and green – in fact I have a purse from Charming Charlie that I still use and love from last year that is blue and green, so I guess this tunic and I were destined to be together.

One of the reasons I love Stitch Fix even though the entire box may not be perfect, the pieces I do keep are always unique and original that you probably won’t be able to find at a store here. I also don’t like shopping in stores very often because I have to visit several, hope they have my size, and keep getting dressed an undressed to try on clothes after waiting/requesting access to dressing rooms.

Stitch Fix takes care of that for me by always sending stuff in my size already, and I do one try on session on a weekend morning before wearing my regular clothes to go out anyway. And, I always get compliments on the things I keep. You may have seen that I wore one of the dresses I got in my March Stitch Fix box out for my birthday:

Yurukyara Grand Prix, a Nodoguro Mascot Dinner

This Throwback Thursday post is a recap of Yurukyara Grand Prix. This is a Nodoguro Mascot Dinner from last year, in their previous space next to Pastaworks but I realized I had never posted this. This may be me, thinking about all the wonderful themes that have inspired Nodoguro dinners that I have been able to enjoy, and reading back on them and looking at the photos reminiscing. I am also looking forward, wondering what it will be like in the new space at Genoa they have now leased – I’ll let you know if I can hopefully get into a June or July Sousaki dinner. You can see all my other Nodoguro recaps of my dinner experiences from before the new space here. This weekend, I will be going to the new space for the first time, to attend SupaHardcore.

In Japan, they promote it seems anything and everything – any company, sometimes a very specific product, even public transit or a mountain park or historical castle or other part of local government (!) with mascots. Japan’s Yurukyara Grand Prix is a special annual event where mascots are essentially in a popularity contest based on the public vote – and apparently for 2015 had 1727 mascots competing! The fact there are so many has generated controversy and a push to cut back recently, per the The Japan Times.

I think my favorite thing with this Yurukyara Grand Prix theme is how it inspired so many people to draw their own mascots.

Another awesome aspect of Nodoguro is being able to ask all the questions you want with Chef Ryan and he is so casually well knowledged in explaining every ingredient and technique and context of culture or inspiration how it connects to the theme, the humble genius that he is.

Course 9 is always the Omelette, which is always a mixed (but not sobering, ha ha…) moment as I realize we are now in the falling action part of the meal story heading to dessert and tea and then I have to go home. That omelette is always perfect.
