Fimbul PDX Konudagur Dinner

Earlier this week I attended an instantiation of the Nordic supper club Fimbul PDX popup, offering Icelandic Cuisine. The theme of the dinner on February 12th, 2019 was to celebrate Konudagur, Icelandic Women’s Day. This holiday, as explained by Fimbul, “has deep roots in ancient Viking midwinter feasts celebrating Góa, the wife of the Winter King Þorri. We will be awaiting the first signs of Spring and celebrating the feminine energy with our tasting menu.”

Besides the 7 course meal for $80, this dinner Fimbul PDX also offered a beverage pairing option that featured wine and spirits crafted by an all female lineup, and during the dinner a playlist of music of Icelandic female artists as we sailed through the tasting menu together.

First Look at Outer Darkness Donuts

From the creative minds who delivered deliciousness with fun and the embracing of wanting to try multiple tastes on the sample plate via Hunnymilk popup brunch is a new popup, Outer Darkness Donuts. They just launched last weekend on Sunday June 3, and here’s my first look at Outer Darkness Donuts. Similar to Hunnymilk, there are no reservations and it’s best for groups of 2 or 4 or no more then 8 maximum. Outer Darkness Donuts pops up only on Sundays, at Jacqueline (2039 SE Clinton St), from 8am-4pm.

On offer here are dark roast drip coffees, fun mimosas, loose leaf tea, and only one food dish you can order: a flight of mini-donuts. You will get both savory and sweet bites, and I was very impressed by how each mini donut was a strong statement of flavors and beautifully presented like this is their regular restaurant, not that they are just taking over for part of a day.

Don’t be intimidated by the dark roast coffees – they had a great variety of sweeteners including local honey of course, but also find salted caramel, local honey, agave syrup, corainder dulce de leche, chocolate rum syrup, and nutella! Make any of these Irish coffees with an upgrade of Jameson and Baileys.
My first look at Outer Darkness Donuts, which on offer here only on Sundays are dark roast drip coffees, fun mimosas, loose leaf tea, and only one food dish you can order: a flight of mini-donuts.

Pop Up Shabbat

I attended a previous Breaking Breads pop up earlier this year, and when I saw they were going to throw a Pop Up Shabbat, I was quick to sign up. The dinner was hosted by Martha Holmberg (current CEO of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, award winning cook book author including the co-author of the best-selling cookbook Six Seasons: A New Way With Vegetables with Joshua McFadden) and Kristin Spear (founder of FaithHaus) with special guest Devra Ferst (a New York City based food writer and editor who has written for Bon Appetit, Vogue, NPR, Conde Nast, and more). Dinner proceeds of the Pop Up Shabbat, and in lieu of gratuity envelopes were provided, that benefit Sack Lunch PDX, a Portland team of Chefs Cycle, a nationwide fundraiser for the No Kid Hungry campaign.

Have you heard of Shabbat? Shabbat is an observance in the Jewish culture that occurs every Friday night which brings family and friends together to celebrate Sabbath, the seventh day of rest that lasts from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. Shabbat dinner on Friday night is in many ways similar to a family’s traditional Sunday Supper – but imagine that this is celebrated as a cornerstone of Jewish culture, almost like celebrating a mini-Thanksgiving but more focus on giving thanks and enjoying friends and family then a belly busting meal).

Shipwreck PDX

I was able to attend Shipwreck PDX at their first pop up in March at Jacqueline, and they made my Eater PDX top pop up list. I plan to attend again at their next pop up in May 15 next from 5 PM to 2 AM at Taqueria Nueve, which is now additionally partnering with Rum Club while waiting for your table. It’s a strong sign how they are continually improving and actively making choices by learning from their experience in March.
