Portland Drink and a Bite Highlight: Higgins Portland

For Foodie Friday today, I continue my new series highlighting a Portland Drink and a Bite of food that I think not only is best in class within Portland, but is a classic representation of the character of Portland. Of course, that Portland Drink and a Bite Highlight is also delicious, and unique.

My pick this week is Higgins Portland. Higgins Restaurant and Bar is one of those classic Pacific Northwest cuisine restaurants that changes its menu weekly to reflect what is the best in local products for not only the season but for the week. There are many restaurants and even food carts in Portland now that take advantage of the best ingredients from the farmers and producers locally here, but Higgins has been doing so for more than 20 years, and promoted this responsibility and represented Oregon worldwide.

Chef Greg Higgins (2002 James Beard award as Best Chef in the Northwest) and the Higgins Restaurant and Bar philosophy strongly sources not only local ingredients, but focuses in supporting on local small farms, organic, and sustainable agriculture practices. Higgins believes not only in delicious food on the table, but stewardship of our soil, water and air.

Higgins’ premise is “food is community – an idea that creates respect, commitment and responsibility from farmer to chef to diner.”  (See more at the Higgins website. There is also a wonderful profile for the Higgins 20th anniversary at Oregon Live.).

It’s no wonder than that when visitors to Portland ask where they can try Pacific Northwest cuisine, Higgins is always on my list of recommendations. Higgins is a white tablecloth restaurant that is perfect for a business lunch or a classy meal of lunch or dinner.

You notice the focus on celebrating freshness and the best ingredients right away with even the complimentary bread service, which comes with perfect bread- crusty crunchy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside- that you can enjoy with organic extra virgin olive oil.

Try to start with the famous Charcuterie Board of artisanal cured meats and pickles. It’s justifiably reknown – it superb in offering an array of flavors and textures upon its giant marble board, as what you would expect when you hear Chef Greg Higgins has loved charcuterie since he was a boy and has books in his library on charcuterie that daties even to the 17th and 18th centuries.

The specific bite I want to highlight for this Portland Drink and a Bite though is the Higgins Lunch and Bistro menu option of the Open-faced sandwich of pastrami, grilled onions & sharp white cheddar. Here I substituted the salad with their daily soup, a butternut squash with quinoa that day.

I think it’s the best pastrami in Portland.

One of the unique things about Higgins is they have on staff not only a wine sommelier, but also a beer steward. You can rest easy ordering any beverage here because all the picks are wonderful at this Portland institution. Instead of a specific cocktail, I urge you to use your best judgement based on what is on the list. In particular I love the wine by the glass list here in highlighting producers I may not have heard of before locally.

Have you been to Higgins Portland? Have you had the pastrami there? Where do you think is the best pastrami in Portland?

DarSalam Lazurdi

I was thrilled to hear that DarSalam, which started as a food cart and then opened a brick and mortar restaurant in Northeast Portland on Alberta was going to open a second location right in downtown at 320 SW Alder, called DarSalam Lazurdi. I have high hopes that this will open up exploration of their Middle Eastern cuisine with a few special Iraqi dishes from their hometown of Baghdad to a larger audience.
DarSalam Lazurdi new location on SW Alder
Their lunch buffet that they offer Mon-Fri 11:30-3:30 is a huge bargain, with the to go buffet discounted $2 from the regular dine in price of about $12. They also serve happy hour (4-6 PM Mon-Fri, 2-5 PM on Sat) and dinner (6-9 PM Mon-Sat) and full bar available alongside their vegan, gluten free, and halal options or conscientious of the lactose intolerant.

When I tried their lunch buffet, there was a big bounty of options to choose from and my plate was super heavy even though I took only one spoonful of everything they had on the line that day. In fact, I had to leave out the soup in my first pass, and one dish (pickled mango salad) ended up in that soup bowl instead because I was just out of room despite my careful trying to just taste everything.
DarSalam Lazurdi lunch buffet at the new location on SW Alder My crazy heavy plate with just one spoonful of everything at the buffet, including that Curry Roasted Chicken in the middle, some Potato Salad (green) that separates it from the Tilapia with Mixed Vegetables on the left. Then all around little scoops, starting from 1200, rice, Ful Mudammas (fava beans), Lamb Marga, Spinach White Bean Stew, Chickpea Marga, Tahziki Salad, Beet Salad,Eggplant Marga, and Hummus. In the separate bowl is the Pickled Mango Salad

That included during my visit

  • Pickled Mango Salad: Pickled mango mixed with tomato and chickpeas
  • Ful Mudammas: Fava beans lightly mashed, lemon, olive oil and garlic
  • Tahziki Salad: yogurt blended with fresh garlic, lemon juice and cucumber

The downtown space is gorgeous with lots of bold royal blue and gold colors. The new larger location has room and plans for live music and belly dancing on weekend evenings.

The service is kind and respectful with a bit of homeyness and humility. You can order from the menu during lunch so you aren’t restricted to the buffet, but it will be slower than the obvious serve yourself of the buffet line. You go to the register at the end to pay your bill.

Even after a second trip to the buffet, my wonderful group of women lunching with me stepped up to ordering all the desserts to share between us. And it was the perfect ending.

As much as you enjoy the food at the buffet, don’t miss leaving a smidge of room for the desserts. Their menu could include some desserts you may not have ever heard of before beyond your usual classic:

  • Baklava, a honey and roasted pistachios rolled up in layers of crisp phyllo dough. The use of pistachios here instead of walnut is what makes it Middle Eastern instead of Mediterranean

I was too stuffed from that first lunch to try the Iraqi shredded meat plate, so forced myself (ha ha ha… it was the bare-bones rationalization I needed to justify a return trip) to come back to try those dishes for you. This is Iraqi style tender shredded meat – your choice of chicken or lamb. I went with chicken.

It can be served as an appetizer with your choice of hummus, baba ghanoush or tahziki and flatbread. Or, have it on salad on a bed of greens, or as a main dish atop a bed of basmati rice with a dollop of chickpea marga and with a side of soup or salad. During happy hour, you can have it as an Iraqi Shawarma.

I like it as the rice plate because it means you get the chickpea marga too and a pretty substantial cup of the Adis, a lentil soup. And, it pretty much means you now have 2 meals from that one order – I had it for dinner two different nights with the leftovers as my second meal.

On my other visit as we awaited our food, we were given a complimentary pita with za’atar dip of the za’atar spices in olive oil.

We shared an appetizer of the Mixed Dolma with onion, zucchini, and grape leaves stuffed with rice, diced vegetables and spices infused with sun dried tomato and pomegranate. My favorite are the dolma stuffed in onion rather than the grape leaves.

The Falafel here instead of being round balls are more doughnut shaped and much bigger! Here they came part of a Vegan Mezza Plate (on the regular Mezza menu, but that was also part of the happy hour menu) that included the Hummus, Baba ghanoush (smoky roasted eggplant ground with tahini, garlic, lemon juice and garnished with zaatar and olive oil), pickled mango salad, and three falafel (made from ground chickpeas and spices cooked to order from scratch

If you order the Arab Coffee, know that it’s a pretty thick and dark coffee, with a hint of cardamom sweetness. They are served in authentic Iraqi sipping glasses and you can actually get refills of it! Do NOT drink to the grounds.

There is also a pretty interesting cocktail menu here that uses a lot of the spices and rose water in the beverages to give you the flavors of the Middle East. On the left you see a special which I think was being rotated out of the menu for December, a Rabbit’s Foot with VSOP Brandy, Luxardo, Cardamaro, Creme de Cassis, Green Chartreuse and Orange Bitters. On the right, I was tasting a preview of a new drink that might appear on the menu, the Philippe that takes advantage of the housemade mango juice they offer with rose water.

You can dine at this DarSalam Lazurdi location downtown, or on their website you can even get delivery of their menu items from Delivery Dudes. If you visit this coming Sunday December 13th from 1 – 5 PM, DarSalam is hosting a Holiday Stop & Shop with small local businesses with appetizers on them as you do a little holiday shopping, and 15% of their proceeds will go to the work of Mercy Corps with Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

Do any of these food items tempt you, which one?

A Power Lunch at Clyde Common

Generally, when people ask me about a power lunch spot in Portland, and they want something besides the traditional steakhouse like a Ringside establishment or Urban Farmer, my mind goes to Higgins to especially showcasing Northwest and local. This is followed further on the list with maybe Davis Tavern, Gruner, and Clark Lewis. Recently though, a new fantastic lunch option has been highlighted onto my radar that I would say immediately after Higgins now on my short list- and that’s lunch at Clyde Common.

Clyde Common offers a well rounded menu of options showcasing the season and region, without the questionable people hanging on the sidewalks like Davis Tavern and with a more modern, hip vibe like Gruner and Clark Lewis but more approachable food that is sophisticated but not fancy.

As you are waiting for your lunch party to assemble and read the menu, go ahead and order a snack – everyone will thank you. The roasted garlic cashews and house marinated olives and popcorn with tōgarashi, honey, and butter sound like very low key bar snacks, but are worth it as you will find yourself continually reaching into the bowl for more as you can’t help wanting to keep that tastiness lasting that balances salty and sweet and bit of savory. These snacks are available on the dinner and happy hour menu as well.

If your party is a little hungrier, you can’t go wrong sharing a Clyde Common + Olympia Provisions charcuterie plate that includes meat goodies that vary depending on what is on hand, which could include (based on what I’ve seen on visits) sopressata, chicken liver or pork liver mousse, country pork pate, saucisson d’alsace or saucisson sec, chorizo navarre, lamb summer sausage, beef tongue pastrami, or various Ancient Heritage Dairy cheeses, as well as pickles, mustard & bread of course. Be sure to ask to see what your board will be boasting. It would be a great choice to accompany cocktails at dinner or happy hour too.

One thing I appreciated is that there are plenty of vegetarian options to choose from – look in the Clyde Common small plate sections for options like a daily soup that I’ve seen vary from cauliflower soup to a summer vegetable gazpacho with basil; there’s also grilled sweet corn with espelette & lime aioli, cotija, and cilantro (warning a little messy to eat as you see it comes on the cob), seared cauliflower with salbitxada and parsley and or a simple green salad with fennel and grana (you can add grilled chicken or seared trout to any salad if you wish). One of my favorites is the simple small plate of fried shishito peppers with citrus vinaigrette,

A large plate of house tagliatelle with arugula pesto, egg yolk, and fried spring onion satisfied hunger without going overboard to take you into naptime. And look how eggscellent it is (sorry couldn’t resist).

If you are a meat eater though, I would definitely point out the lunch only special of smoked pork belly sandwich, slaw, Caroline style BBQ sauce served with salad or fries. Unlike most BBQ pork sandwiches, it’s a chopped version of the pork and not drenched with sauce so you can taste the meat and whisper of smoke. I’m also a fan of Carolina style sauce which is much lighter instead of the sweeter or spicier BBQ sauces (real Carolina sauce is more vinegary than this – the Clyde Common version is thin but not as acidic).

The meat is juicy and moist, as you can see. I would have given up the fries and bun and slaw even just to eat a small pile of the smoked pork belly by itself.

If you happen to come for happy hour or diner instead of lunch (or perhaps in addition to…), definitely don’t miss a special touch by Chef Carlo  Lamagna from his heritage and family of the Phillippines, the pork and shitake lumpia. It’s similar to an egg roll, but a Filipinio version that is crispier and meatier than what you would normally get from a Chinese style egg roll. This is such excellent drinking food that is just too underrepresented in Portland and the US in general. The dish shown below is a normal than average portion for my dining party and doesn’t represent a normal serving. But isn’t it the fanciest presentation of lumpia you’ve ever seen?

I’m also so in love with the happy hour only saganaki and olive bread but not the way you think. Of course you can’t go wrong with seared cheese… but that bread is an unbelievable revlation, I actually savored and took smaller bites of the bread to make it last as long as possible because it is so delicious, more than the cheese. Usually I ignore the bread in meat and cheese boards to focus on the main event, but in this case the olive bread is the star with it’s buttery briochie with specks of olive embedded as surprises. Wow.

To further confuse you on whether you should come here for lunch, happy hour, and/or dinner, I’ll just leave this survey of many of the Clyde Common House Cocktail (available all day) here. I am a fan of the happy hour at Clyde Common, as you can see, and that saganaki (and now I know I was missing out by not having the lumpia too).
