Creative Mexican by Clandestino PDX

On Monday – Wednesday you can find creative Mexican plates and glasses of intriguing wines from Clandestino PDX, a pop-up now in residence at Lil Dame by Dame Collective (in the old Beast/Ripe Cooperative space). If you haven’t had an opportunity to visit, make a date for these weekdays to treat yourself to a cozy dinner and a food and wine mini adventure.

Clandestino joined the collective to start serving up Mexican inspired dishes in December to rave review by tastemaker and written word wrangler Karen Brooks of Portland Monthly who called Clandestino Portland’s Best New Mexican Restaurant. Try to make reservations as the space in inclement weather is very cozy and with recent media coverage may even be full for the night, even on a Monday. You can see how small the open kitchen is, so they also can only realistically do only so many covers per evening. As spring and summer weather open up the outdoor seating and they dial in their menu they’ll have more capacity.

Be sure to try several half glass pours during your visit! You can trust and after selecting your dishes let the staff pour their recommended pairings – you can even ask for a different pairing per person like we did for each dish. Not only are the selections carefully curated to be all winners with the food and diverse in provenance and flavor profile, but that helps support both sides of the collective.

The way it works is the food sales are kept by the chef, Dame keeps the beverage, and overhead and staff costs are split by both resident chef and Dame. So patronize both with your check! I’ve always been a fan of the pop-up model (I even used to cover pop-ups for Eater PDX) – restaurant industry life is hard in terms of long hours and margins in balancing inventory with limited shelf life. Pop-ups allow for some reasonable work time boundaries with more control of when open for business and taking breaks, and an ability to get some work life balance. It’s great business sense for the brick and mortar owners and visiting chefs and part of PDX’s supportive hospitality community.

Gado Gado Portland Breakfast

I have been a fan of Gado Gado Portland, a PDX popup featuring Southeast Asian food, by Thomas and Mariah Thomas Pisha-Duffly over the past year. Their food menu has varied drawing inspiration from all over Asia but usually with nods towards Indonesia from which inspired their Portland popup name. I was thrilled that now they are working on a brick and mortar restaurant home in the Hollywood Neighborhood for spring. Until then they are still a pop-up and probably will be testing out what will go on the menu for their anticipated dinners and brunches. I think the recent Gado Gado Portland Breakfast at Guilder during the past MLK weekend was just the start of seeing what people have interest in.

I’m always excited to see Asian breakfasts. I never thought that Portland would fall in love with Chinese breakfast – but Master Kong has brought congee and jian bing crepes into the common food vocabulary here in PDX so there’s a real chance to expand beyond our donuts or biscuits and gravy and into more types of international breakfast options. Having Gado Gado Portland Breakfast will be a popular standby for me when they open, whether or not the breakfast items I had a chance to try will all be there. The recent pop up included

Pop Up Shabbat

I attended a previous Breaking Breads pop up earlier this year, and when I saw they were going to throw a Pop Up Shabbat, I was quick to sign up. The dinner was hosted by Martha Holmberg (current CEO of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, award winning cook book author including the co-author of the best-selling cookbook Six Seasons: A New Way With Vegetables with Joshua McFadden) and Kristin Spear (founder of FaithHaus) with special guest Devra Ferst (a New York City based food writer and editor who has written for Bon Appetit, Vogue, NPR, Conde Nast, and more). Dinner proceeds of the Pop Up Shabbat, and in lieu of gratuity envelopes were provided, that benefit Sack Lunch PDX, a Portland team of Chefs Cycle, a nationwide fundraiser for the No Kid Hungry campaign.

Have you heard of Shabbat? Shabbat is an observance in the Jewish culture that occurs every Friday night which brings family and friends together to celebrate Sabbath, the seventh day of rest that lasts from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. Shabbat dinner on Friday night is in many ways similar to a family’s traditional Sunday Supper – but imagine that this is celebrated as a cornerstone of Jewish culture, almost like celebrating a mini-Thanksgiving but more focus on giving thanks and enjoying friends and family then a belly busting meal).

Shipwreck PDX at Taqueria Nueve

Last month in May, Shipwreck PDX popped up at Taqueria Nueve. They will be back next week on July 10 but with an update to now be working with one of my favorite burger joints in town, Burger Steven’s, and burger food cart of chef Don Salamone. In the meantime, here’s a few photos from the last Shipwreck PDX at Taqueria Nueve pop up to show their larger menu of drinks and eats. You can also see photos from their first pop-up here.

Shipwreck PDX

I was able to attend Shipwreck PDX at their first pop up in March at Jacqueline, and they made my Eater PDX top pop up list. I plan to attend again at their next pop up in May 15 next from 5 PM to 2 AM at Taqueria Nueve, which is now additionally partnering with Rum Club while waiting for your table. It’s a strong sign how they are continually improving and actively making choices by learning from their experience in March.
