May 2016 Stitch Fix Box

I get my Stitch Fix boxes quarterly, and for my recent one I requested long dresses and tops to wear with leggings. If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix before, it’s a service where you can choose your style profiles based on questions and looking at example clothes. If you are interested in joining Stitch Fix, please consider using my Stitch Fix referral code!

Then, at a predetermined interval that you pick (I pick quarterly, but you can pick specific dates so it could be any time period you choose), a stylist will send you 5 items for you to try based on question you answer (don’t worry, some have pictures – and they have specific clothes for petites and maternity wear). Each box is hand selected based on what you would like in terms of price, your style, and you can request items such as clothing for a holiday party, for a vacation, for work, for going out, etc. You can even request specific designers or what you’ve seen in other people’s Stitch Fix boxes, which is why I always share and hope others also share what they get in their box.

Each box is different depending on the stylist – there are times I keep everything in the box like with my March 2015 box. And many of my favorite pieces in my current wardrobe are from the multiple other boxes I’ve shared before from Stitch Fix, even though I don’t always keep the whole box. A mixed box of some I like and some which were just no (although I still dutifully try on everything since I am at home and have been surprised before).

This time, there were several items that did not look great on the hanger – so I thought I’d also share the style card that is included with the fix so you can see some of the advice Stitch Fix provides in styling a piece at least two ways.

This was super comfy, and I liked how it was both casual with the front but a little sexy see through in the back. And look how cute it is styled either with light pieces or dark pieces!

But, I’m not one of those people that is ok with people seeing my bra – the ones I have are all very practical in being either nude color or black. I know there are plenty of people who do wear sheer shirts and wear pretty lacy bras and bralettes and it looks fine! It’s just my personal preference, so I didn’t keep this one.

This looks terrible on the hanger, and it also didn’t look too great on me because it appeared too loose and shapeless. The colors are fun though for the summer, and the stylist pointed out how this could be a great piece under layers. Still, I did not keep it.

With the strappy back I don’t know why it took me like 5 minutes to even figure out how to hang this dress up. And the photos just don’t do justice to how lovely the cut of the dress is for the top, and how extremely soft and comfortable it is. The card does a much better job of showing how great this is.

OneMarket Toree Maxi Dress

I really liked hwo the dress looked before I tried it on – it looks perfect to wear to a garden party, be it a bridal shower or baby shower or even a wedding.

Unfortunately when I tried it on it fit too snug on my hips so I did not keep it. I’m not sure why when I scanned the card it came out looking more pink, but the dress is a peach color.

Crescent Allium Tie Waist Tunic

This was my favorite piece of the box. There’s something that is so classic but fresh about this design. And I really like the color combination of blue and green – in fact I have a purse from Charming Charlie that I still use and love from last year that is blue and green, so I guess this tunic and I were destined to be together.

One of the reasons I love Stitch Fix even though the entire box may not be perfect, the pieces I do keep are always unique and original that you probably won’t be able to find at a store here. I also don’t like shopping in stores very often because I have to visit several, hope they have my size, and keep getting dressed an undressed to try on clothes after waiting/requesting access to dressing rooms.

Stitch Fix takes care of that for me by always sending stuff in my size already, and I do one try on session on a weekend morning before wearing my regular clothes to go out anyway. And, I always get compliments on the things I keep. You may have seen that I wore one of the dresses I got in my March Stitch Fix box out for my birthday:

Stitch Fix Box Review March 2016

I got my quarterly Stitch Fix box, and wanted to do a Stitch Fix Box Review March 2016 of what I received for all of you out there who are also Stitch Fix members and looking to see if there are items you want to request for your next box. This is also for you out there who are wondering what a Stitch Fix styling clothing subscription can do for you.

You can choose to keep the entire box (and get a 25% discount off the entire price of the box) or just some of them or none of the items. Each box charges a $20 styling fee, but if you buy any item from the box that is credited towards your Stitch Fix purchase.

I feel like I’m really into the brand Skies Are Blue, since I have several of those items from Stitch Fix – so the stylists know it!

As you can see this did get a little wrinkly from being folded up, but I dug right away the color and all that detail that makes this blouse stand out from other blouses that may have this similar fluttery sleeve. The color looks good all year round and can be layered, but then if we have a crazy summer of lots of high 90 degree weather the fact this is sleeveless mean I can wear it alone and be more fashionable then the usual tank or cardigan shells. I kept the blouse.

This Collective Concepts Crespi Split Neck Blouse is a little more bohemian than I normally would choose, but I have many work blouses which require a tank underneath and sometimes I just want to be able to wear a shirt! In fact, that was one of the feedbacks I had given previously, so I was really happy they were looking out for tops for me where I wouldn’t have to keep wearing the same tank tops every week underneath all my blouses.

I thought it might be too boxy, but was surprised when I tried it on, and I thought about it for a bit a few more days. This is another plus of having Stitch Fix sent to home – I didn’t put this on until the next day after trying on a few things from this box. Plus I get time to think about it before putting in my order/decision of what to keep and what to return. As you can see, there are little pleats in the front (there are also some in the back) which help make the cut more flattering then it may initially appear on the hanger.

And, I also liked the design where the pattern that draws your eye down is in the main part of the blouse as well as on the sleeves as a white highlight pattern. I discovered that the inside of the sleeves also has patterned ties so as the weather warms for spring I can switch from these longer sleeves to rolling up the sleeves and trying it in place with little bows.

One of my favorite things about Stitch Fix is getting just a few statement pieces every once in a while to refresh my wardrobe, but also that are unique. Not as many people are going to a department or clothing store in Portland generally will have this same shirt, unlike some of the more trend pieces I might get just for a season. I felt like this blouse I could wear for several years to come and it would still be cool. I kept the blouse.

I was also really torn on this Le Lis Hollycroft Crew Neck Blouse. As soon as I saw it, I was not into this floral pattern, even if it’s on trend.

Something about the colors seemed old too. I tried it on and loved the cut, and how it can be worn as a blouse on its own. But, I couldn’t imagine wearing the shirt much on it’s own without a layering because I just didn’t want to see that much of the flower pattern! I decided to return it.

Anita Skinny Pant


These high rise black Anita Skinny Pants looked great and somehow magically fit perfectly for the legs making up my 5’2″ height. They were stretchy, comfy, and could really be casual or dressed up for work or going out. But, one of the pluses of getting this at home is that I tried them on, and then went downstairs to feed my cat and get ready to go to the dentist. And that’s when I noticed that the pants kept slipping down on me. I suppose I could wear a belt, but I usually don’t. So I ended up returning these.

When I first saw the Donna Morgan Jamison Dress, I was worried about how it was a straight cut down with a tie on belt and buttons. Would the buttons gap a little? Would the buttons be too low of a V neck? It turns out after trying it on it’s a very loose straight cut but it’s not completely straight, so it skims over my hips. It’s a little brighter than some of my dresses (which tend to be in the black and white category…) but I also really liked how the dress offered a longer sleeves so I can wear it now for spring.

Plus, I have some purple jewelry but not a lot of purple clothes, so now I had a reason to take those accessories out a little more. The dress is a little short, I will probably wear tights with these. I decided to keep the dress.

The number one piece of advice I can give is write feedback for every individual piece and be specific about what you like and don’t like. There are times I’ve sent back most of a box, other times I’ve kept most or all the box. A stylist is only as good at knowing you as your notes!

August Stitch Fix Review

It’s been a hot summer – as of this posting, we have been breaking records with 27? days over 90 degrees F – and not that those days in the 80s don’t still feel pretty warm. I started a new job around mid-June, and for my Stitch Fix box I requested items that could help me be comfortable in the heat but help me get out of the rut of sundresses that once I get into the office I have to throw a cardigan over since they are strappy.

If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix before, Stitch Fix is a monthly styling subscription service personalized for you. You go online and they ask you question to get an information on your size as well as your preferences in style. Then, based on all that and any optional notes or Pinterest boards you give, a stylist will pick out 5 pieces to ship to you that are mailed to your home for your consideration for a $20 styling fee which is credited toward any clothing purchase – return in a prepaid mailing package what you don’t want.

Here is what I got for my August Stitch Fix:

Abella Maxi Dress

This dress doesn’t look like much when I first unfolded it and put it on the hanger. But, part of the whole purpose of Stitch Fix is to try it on in the comfort of your own home with no one there to see you, no need to carry anything from the dressing room, and it’s something a stylist thought would work – so I should trust her and give it a try.

I was really surprised when I tried it on – it is super super comfy – like wearing pajamas comfy. But, it is also stylish because of a tie detail by the front I hadn’t noticed at first that lets you tighten it in to give some definition, and on both sides of the legs there are slits that also give a flash of leg/skin so it’s not just a typical maxi dress. If there was ever a fire and I had to quickly get some clothes on at night, and I might be wearing it for 24 hours as things were figured out, I would choose this dress.

And, most maxi dresses are long on me since I’m only 5’2″- so long that I have to wear heels, and it may still be almost at the floor. This dress is comfortably at my ankles, which itself is a big deal for me. All the above helped justify the cost of the dress, which I think was on the pricier side for a maxi dress (about 2x a normal maxi at a store).

I kept the dress.

At first, this dress looks like a basic black dress with white polka dots. The cut of the dress is very flattering in how well it follows my shoulders and is cut close to my top, but then flares out nicely to hide flaws from the waist on. And, it is actually a dark grey dress with white flowery dots. Looking in my closet, it made me realize I don’t have a polka dotty basic dress (though I have plenty of black/white flower pattern apparently) and I like that it can be styled for many seasons and in fun ways or more office or even cocktail occasions.

I kept the dress.

This was my favorite of the offerings of the box because it has a combination of edginess from the black and white pattern but it’s also soft with the pleats and transparency of the flowy material. I know I can wear this to work now as is with jeans or pants or black skirts, but easily wear this into every other season as well layered with cardigans. And, I like that unlike some of my other Stitch Fix boxes where I had blouses that I had to layer tanks on, this is one that works on its own or that I can layer other things on top but finally I don’t need to keep pulling from my tank drawer with something underneath!

I kept the blouse – I wore it just a few days later after receiving the box!

As soon as I saw the pattern I was already on the fence. I like the colors, but then there’s something somehow 8-bit about it with the edges. Then, when I tried it on the fit was fine- but then F pointed out that he could still see my bra and that it wasn’t work appropriate. I know there are people out there who create outfits where it is ok to see the bra – but I’m not that type of person (I tend to only have nude or black bras to even try to blend in the straps if I can) and F hates it, so this is going back. But, with a nice black bra and without my/F’s hang-up I can see how this could be a versatile piece.

I was torn between how I felt about this. It was very soft and I liked the detail at the shoulder and arms. But the main portion of horizontal stripes was boxy on me. Ultimately, I decided for the price it wasn’t worth it for me in terms of how comfortable it is, the fit, and how unique it is (or in this case, not unique enough) from what I can find on my own that it’s worth adding to my closet.

I didn’t keep the top.

My next Stitch Fix is scheduled for after my busy September of Feast and GABF trips, and my October trip to Sante Fe. I requested clothes that I can travel with for my trip to Japan in December that won’t wrinkle! March 2015 Stitch Fix review

I was surprised as I opened up my box of Stitch Fix to see at the top that my March 2015 box was Stitch Fix #15. Thanks to Stitch Fix, for the past year I’ve now spent less time wandering between and inside stores every season to see what I might want to add to my wardrobe to keep it fresh. During this time while subtracting my shopping time they have been  adding the times I have received compliments on some of my outfits because they have unique stand out pieces. And, the stylists have challenged me to try things and find out I like them, even though I would have never thought to even pick it up from a hanger – but once I try it on, I discover a new love!

If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix before, Stitch Fix is a monthly styling subscription service personalized for you. You go online and they ask you questions, including showing you images of various outfits, to get an information on your size as well as your preferences in style. If you’d like you can also make a Pinteret board of fashion inspirations for the stylists to also check out and get an idea of what you like.

Then, based on that, a stylist will pick out 5 pieces to ship to you that are mailed to your home. There is a $20 styling fee that is applied to your order as soon as the box is shipped to your home. You can choose whether you want to exclude anything (such as outerwear or jewelry or certain colors), or ask for certain things (I wanted pieces that were not too casual that I couldn’t wear them to a business casual office). You also get to choose how often you get your Stitch Fix boxes – monthly, quarterly, on demand if you want your Fix sooner or at a certain time because of an event.

Then, in the comfort of your own home with real mirrors and normal light and while looking/working it out with your own clothes already in your closet, you can try everything on and decide to keep any, all,  or none of the pieces in your Stitch Fix box. A $20 styling fee is charged when the biz first ships, but is credited  to the cost of the clothing if you do purchase anything, and if you purchase everything in the box you get 25% off.  If you return anything, there is already a postage paid envelope in the package and you will not be charged anything besides the styling fee. The most important part is to always leave feedback when you check out, whether you like or don’t like an article they have sent, so that the stylists understand what went wrong/right and can adjust accordingly. That’s how you get successful Stitch Fix boxes. Here is what I got in my March Stitch Fix:

I don’t have a photo of the Henry & Belle Abana Skinny Jean – it’s just a black pair of jeans that have a good stretchy factor. They are more expensive then I would like, so usually I would have sent them back except that they also are high waisted. A lot of my jeans sit at my waist, so the fact these look hip but are not mommy jeans but tuck me in is appreciated. Then the fact with the simple black color these jeans could even pass possibly as pants felt like a good addition to my wardrobe. I hate jeans shopping, and so I debated in my mind whether I was willing to pay a little bit more than I normally would in order to trade off not going to multiple stores and trying on multiple jeans in the dressing room, and the addition of black jeans. Yes, I am willing to pay a little more to not go through wondering if jeans will go up my hips or button/zip fully.

When I first pulled saw the Honey Punch Ana Marie Mixed Material Top, I didn’t really like the pattern as it seems so preppie and conservative, and it requires I wear this a specific smooth bra as it shows bra lines easily and I have a weird thing with that. But, then I felt the shirt- it feels so incredibly soft, like a well loved well worn jersey knit T-shirt. I can wear it to work or casually. Sold, keeping.

I think I squealed after I pulled this Yumi Mckinley Printed Dress out of the box. I looooove it! The color is great for spring, the little bird pattern is adorable and very Portland, and the material is nice and thick, which is great since the spring weather is still pretty chilly in the morning and evenings. Love it! Love it so much!

So this Gilli Auden Ikat Print Dress from my March 2015 Stitch Fix may not look like much on the hanger, but it’s form fitting but not too tight on the top while the pop of color as part of the skirt makes it stand out from just wearing a little black dress or black/white dress. I also have this one set of earrings and necklace from Target already in a similar turquoise color that I love but don’t get to wear much, and they went perfectly with the colors in the skirt. I wore it 4 hours after I received it to attend TOAST 2015, so a keeper because it isn’t so low on top that I can’t wear it to work, but also great to go out in. And for someone who doesn’t have much of a chest, this dress creates an impressive illusion. Sorry that my selfie game is very, very very weak.

Given that I was keeping all those pieces above, it didn’t make sense to just send back the Skies Are Blue Devon Lace Back Blouse. I loved the color and lace back, but didn’t like the fit because it is very boxy. But I was pretty much getting it for free with the 25% discount if I got the whole box, so it made sense just to keep it too.
